10 Popular Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas For The Modern Couple
Looking for engraving ideas for your wedding bands? We’ve got 10 for you!
Engraving your wedding bands is a great way to personalise an already unique piece of jewellery that symbolise a promise to love and commit. Whether you decide to stick to traditional love verses or a phrase that only you and your love knows, ring engraving is a romantic way of reminding you and your beloved of the promises, love and commitment you’ve made to each other.
Since your wedding band is a piece of jewellery that you’ll be wearing for a long time, you definitely don’t want to choose the wrong inscription to engrave on your ring and have to live with it forever. But, you don’t have to stress too much over it either. With the guidance of experienced jewellers, choosing the perfect inscription to engrave on your wedding bands will be a breeze.
Born and raised in a family of jewellers, there is no better person to ask about ring engraving ideas than Amanda Koo, founder and graduate gemologist of eClarity, one of Singapore’s largest online diamond jewellers. With 17 years of experience in designing over 20,000 beautiful rings, Amanda shares some of the more popular wedding ring engraving ideas modern couples can consider for their once-in-a-lifetime.
1. Classic and Romantic Sentiments
Classic sentiments such as “I love you” and “Always and forever” are beautiful options if you are looking for something romantic and everlasting to engrave on your wedding bands. With just a few words, these short and sweet phrases remind you of the love you have for one another, wherever and whenever you are.
For an extra special touch, engrave the words “I love you” in another language such as French or Latin, or even, in your mother tongue.
2. Names/Initials
One of the most popular and common engraving ideas most couples opt for is to etch their partner’s names or initials on their wedding bands. Short, sweet and simple, you can choose to inscribe both your names or initials on the rings, or yours on his band, and his on yours.
You can up the ante on this popular idea by creating a personalised monogram using both your initials, parts of your names, or a combination of both. Or, you can engrave your names or initials in your handwriting on your rings for a more personal touch!
3. Signature/Fingerprint
Take the personalisation factor up a notch by engraving your signatures or fingerprints on your wedding bands. Your signature and fingerprint are things that are unique to you and cannot be replicated, so if you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind engraving that belongs to you exclusively, this is an option you can consider.
“Signature or fingerprint engraving is one of eClarity’s specialties and many of our couples have chosen to personalise their rings by engraving their unique signatures or fingerprints,” Amanda shares.
4. Sound Waves of Your Beloved saying “I love you”
Instead of words, how about engraving the sound of your beloved saying “I love you” or part of your wedding vows? Sound wave engraving is an incredibly unique way of remembering your partner. Like their fingerprint or signature, it is a one-of-a-kind reminder of the person you love and the love that they have for you that you can always carry along with you. The bonus? Only you and your partner know what those wavy inscriptions mean, making them all the more special.
“Here at eClarity, we specialise in sound waves engraving and are experienced in helping couples engrave the sound waves of them saying meaningful words to their partner,” Amanda recalls.
5. Special Dates
Another popular idea for wedding ring engravings is to etch dates with a special meaning to you and your partner. Not only are they comparatively shorter than names or phrases, they are unique to your relationship.
You can choose any significant date that carry a special place in your heart – it could be the day you met, the day you became a couple, the day you were engaged, or something as simple and straightforward as your wedding date.
6. Personalised Sayings/Get Personal
Instead of classic words like “I love you”, choose to personalise your very own sayings by opting for words or phrases that only you and your beloved know. It could be an inside joke, an endearing word or phrases that you use between yourselves, or even pet names that you have for each other.
Engraving these special words or phrases that are unique to your relationship adds an extra personal touch to your wedding bands and these inscriptions will always remind you of the special bond that you share.
7. Favourite Song or Lyrics
Have a couple song, or want to remember the song that was playing the background when you first met or proposed? Why not immortalise those sentiments and words by engraving them onto your wedding bands? It’s a great way for you to commemorate your love or that special moment, and carry a piece of it with you all the time.
Plus, since musicians have a way with words, you can be sure that the lyrics that you’ve chosen to inscribe onto your rings will have a romantic ring to it.
8. Religious Verses
Many couples bond over a shared faith and its a beautiful thing to share with the person whom you’ll be spending forever with. So, it isn’t surprising to know that religious verses are one of the many popular engraving requests out there, especially if you and your partner feel particularly strong towards one.
9. Complete-the-sentence Engravings
A really fun and sweet engraving idea is to etch one half of a sentence on each of your wedding bands, so that when you put them together, the sentence completes itself, just like how you two complete each other.
10. Wedding Vows
Whether you’ve chosen to go with the traditional “Til death do us part” vows, or write your own unique vows, engraving part of your vows onto your wedding bands is a lovely way to remember and commemorate your love and promises to one another in this journey of a lifetime that you’ll go on together.
“While there is a recommended length of words to engrave on the rings, we have couples who requested for the full marriage vow to be engraved, which we fulfilled via microscopic words,” Amanda shares.
Things to keep in mind when engraving rings
Let Your Jeweller Know Right From The Start
If you and your partner have already decided that you’d like to engrave your rings, then it is a good idea to let your jeweller know from the get-go, so that they can make recommendations that are suited to your needs.
Fact-check Before You Decide
Before you make a decision, do check with your jeweller on how much it’ll cost to engrave your rings, and how long it’ll take for it to complete. You should also check with them on the length of the engraving so that you have a better idea of what you can inscribe on your rings.
“The recommended length usually depends on the size and design of the ring, but generally, for rings below size 12, we would suggest keeping the engraving to 20 words and below,” Amanda shares.
Don’t Rush Your Decision
Your wedding bands are something that both you and your partner will be wearing for a long time, so you definitely don’t want to rush the decision on your choice of engraving for your rings. Fortunately, engraving is usually the last step in completing your rings, so you’ll have some time to think about the words you’d like to inscribe on them, especially if you have to change your initial choice of engraving due to the size and design of your chosen rings.
Talk to your jeweller, who will be in a better position to advise and recommend suitable engraving ideas for you to consider, and mull over your options with your partner before you decide on one.
