Bridal Makeup and Gown Trends from 1950s till Now: A Wedding Fashion Styled Shoot

Exploring bridal makeup trends and wedding gown fashions from the 1950s to the present, this styled shoot hopes to inspire you to find your own style!

Wedding fashion has changed a lot over the years. From big, poufy sleeves and layers of ruffles, to sleek numbers paired with shiny chignons, bridal looks have certainly undergone many transformations. Today’s styled shoot explores how wedding fashions and bridal makeup trends have evolved through the 1950s and 1980s, up till today’s dreamy and romantic trends. Conceptualised by Candy T. Makeup Artistry, Silhouette the Atelier, and One Click Wonders, the shoot plays with interpretations of the iconic looks of each fashion era to inspire you to find your own timeless style.

Inspired by the vintage glamour of the 1950s Hollywood stars, the team created a set that depicted sophistication and elegance. “We referenced the impeccable Audrey Hepburn with a classy and elegant makeup look featuring winged eyeliner, bronze, earth-tone eyeshadow, defined arched brows, and bold red lips,” shared Candy Tiong, founder of Candy T. Makeup Artistry. The bride’s look was completed with perfectly coiffed hair to match the precise makeup of the 1950s.

Silhouette the Atelier chose a gown that reflected the main style of the era—classy and elegant. A deep plunge neckline referenced old Hollywood glamour, while the formfitting cut spoke of the era’s classic elegance. Daniel Ho of One Click Wonders recreated the vintage photography style with slightly faded colours and warm tones.

Exploring 1980s fashion, when trends evolved from classic and simple to bold and colourful, Candy T. Makeup Artistry played with colourful eyeshadow and bright, fuschia pink lips. To reference the 80’s love for big, puffy shoulders and long sleeves, Silhouette the Atelier chose a gorgeous long-sleeved lace gown with intricate detailing.

The bride’s look was finished with big curls and the poufy veil that was so in vogue in the 1980s. The era’s bold and vibrant vibe was captured with brighter colours by One Click Wonders.

Finally, the journey through fashion history ends with the team’s interpretation of today’s favoured styles. Modern hair and makeup trends move towards soft and natural looks with glowing skin. For this set, Candy T. Makeup Artistry kept the makeup colour palette light and natural, using eyeshadows in natural tones, subtle contouring, pink blush, and light lip colours. They styled the bride’s hair in a soft and airy look with a loosely gathered chignon.

To reflect the modern bride’s love for dainty and feminine gowns, Silhouette the Atelier chose a hand-sewn lace bustier gown with crystal accents, accessorised with a crystal shoulder chain. Using natural light and shallow focusing, One Click Wonders captured the whole look with a soft and dreamy feel popularised by Korean dramas.

The team hopes that this editorial’s exploration of bridal styles will inspire you to discover your own! “Today many people seem to just go with whatever is trending on social media,” they share. “We would love to see couples challenge themselves to be different and to take inspiration from all of fashion!”

Believing that every wedding should reflect a couple’s unique personalities, the team is offering an exclusive destination pre-wedding photography bundle so you can flaunt your personal style in the beautiful landscapes of Japan. At only $5,000 (U.P. $8,200), the destination pre-wedding photography bundle includes a 1 full-day pre-wedding shoot in Japan, up to 8 hours, by Daniel Ho of One Click Wonders, 1 off-the-rack gown rental from Silhouette the Atelier, and 1 bridal hair and makeup look and 1 touch-up by Candy T.
