Gail and Jeremy’s Korean-Inspired Wedding at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

Gail and Jeremy got engaged in the same Korean university where they first met. The couple tied the knot in a Korean-inspired wedding at Singapore Marriott Plaza Hotel.

Soh Gail, 26, Financial Consultant, and Jeremy Tan, 29, Senior Operations Executive, met in Korea while on student exchange, so it was extra meaningful and romantic when Jeremy planned a surprise proposal in the very university they met! Celebrating their journey’s ties to Korea, the couple wed on 11 November 2017 in a Korean-inspired wedding at Singapore Marriott Plaza Hotel.

How did you meet each other?

We first met in early 2014, when we were in Year 3 at Nanyang Technological University. We applied to go to Seoul National University for exchange and we met during the briefing in school before the trip began.

What made you fall in love with your partner?

Gail: We were not drawn to each other at first! It was only after we settled down in Seoul for school that we truly found out what each other was like. We also stayed in an apartment with three other friends instead of the dorms, so there wasn’t much we could hide from one another in terms of daily living habits.

I love that he always makes me feel so protected and safe, like he will always have my back no matter what.

Jeremy: I love her personality—she’s beautiful inside and out.

What was the proposal like?

Gail: In early 2016 we were back in Seoul for a holiday, and when we visited Seoul National University again to relive memories of our exchange, he proposed. Jeremy sent a steady stream of SNU students to present flowers to me, one by one. I was dumbfounded and wondering what the heck was going on, until some of them gave it away when they said “축하해!” which means, “Congratulations!”

About 20 students later, the last girl arrived with a single red rose in her hand (which was really special because the previous flowers were all other colours and types but never red) and asked me, “Do you know this guy?” I looked closely at the rose, and on its wrapper was a photo of 2014 Jeremy, standing at a vine-covered walkway somewhere in school. I looked at her and said that I did. She smiled at me and said, “Alright, let’s go to where he is standing in the picture.”

So we walked all the way to the walkway at a quiet part of the school, and there was Jem, waiting right at the end of it, smiling and holding a big bouquet of flowers. It was so romantic, everything I’d dreamed for a proposal.

How did you create your wedding?

Gail: I wanted a dreamy Korean-inspired wedding (since everything is related to Korea for us), so I started picking out a Korean pre-wedding shoot and wedding gowns. Then came the hotel and the blush pink and white decor that came with it. Mostly, I picked out everything I wanted, and the husband just shook his head and paid. Haha!

Gail: I used SingaporeBrides to get some ideas on how I wanted my wedding to be like, at the beginning stage of the wedding preparations! We didn’t have many vendors as we wanted to minimise the chances of having things messed up on the actual day, but we made sure to choose the best vendors of the lot. They were amazing, and I had no regrets!

What was your wedding day like?

This may sound cliché, but it was perfect. Everything went smoothly from morning till night, and we both had a lot of fun on that day, in spite of the stress from all the preparation that came with it.

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?

Gail: When he opened the door to the room after the gatecrash and the look on his face when his eyes first fell upon me.

Jeremy: Her walking down the aisle towards me during the solemnisation.
