Jaslyn and Jack’s Fairy-Lit Beach Wedding at Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa

Jaslyn and Jack’s DIY wedding projects brought them closer together, and added a personal touch to their beautiful, fairy-lit Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa wedding.

Jaslyn Lek, 29, Marketing Manager, and Jack Jonethan, 32, Operations Manager, had worked at the same company for more than five years before things heated up and they went on a date! Inspired by Pinterest, the couple DIY’ed lots of personal details for their special day, in a beautiful fairy-lit wedding by the sea at Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa on 15 October 2018, where family and friends lit sparklers to welcome them in!

How did you meet each other?

Jaslyn: We met at work, where we both spent most of our time. In fact, we both noticed each other more than five years ago, but we barely spoke to each other. There were probably a lot of times when we crossed paths that we did not even look at each other. Jack claims to have always been polite and exchanged glances though!

I had actually always thought he looked like a high profile kind of guy, so I tried to stay away from “trouble”. Then one day, he enrolled in a programme at work and had to move around the various departments to observe all the scopes of work. We did not have any contact then or even see each other much throughout his weeks with my department because we were always on opposite shifts. I was on mostly night shifts and he was on morning.

Jack: Most of the times I saw her, she would be looking her worst–makeup melted after a long, 10-hour night shift–but I think that’s what made me want to ask her out. At least I knew how this girl looked at her worst! So I asked her out for a meal and I told her I would be there waiting until she turned up. She did not believe me!

Anyway, she did turn up but I was late and she didn’t know I was there because I did not have her contact number. I apologised the next day and told her that this time I would not be late. I still did not get her number because I had faith she would turn up. (Well, in case she was considering not showing up, I had made a backup plan to ask a friend out for dinner–a friend who actually reminded her that I would be waiting!)

What’s one of the things you love most about your partner?

Jack: I love that she is very sensitive toward others but I hate that about her as well. She is always putting other people’s interest above hers. Who actually does that?!

Jaslyn: I always tell him I invested my time because he claimed to be a homely man, a stay-home husband-quality kind of guy. And then I felt cheated haha! I actually love that he has got the worst temper but he actually cares a lot for the people he loves; he just shows it differently. I also love the fact that he put in a lot of effort to build and maintain this relationship to what it is today.

What was the proposal like?

Jaslyn: I thought the proposal was just him asking me in the bathroom when we were preparing to head out one day, “Do you think we’re ready to apply for a flat together? Have somewhere we both can call home?”

About two years later, he surprised me with an official proposal on our trip to Bali. Given that both of us prefer things simple and low profile, I thought it was out of the blue when he suddenly blabbered a number of things on one of our nights’ stay in the villa, talking about what we have been through. I actually replied him, “Are you trying to pick a fight in the middle of our trip or what?” Then he knelt down, opened a super shiny ring box, with LED lights in it, and asked me to marry him.

What did you want for your wedding and how did you create it?

Jack: When we were starting to prepare for the big day, she saved like hundreds of pictures and ideas from everywhere, like SingaporeBrides and Pinterest. Some moments, I felt the wedding was going to be messy; it’s like she wants EVERYTHING. I am the kind who believes that things will fall into place eventually when the time comes. Which they did, but it was because I have her!

Jaslyn: Yes, we argued quite a lot over the process. He thought I wanted every Pinterest Pin so he was like, “What do you want?!”

We did a lot of research through SingaporeBrides, reading others’ Real Wedding interviews and trying to pick up pointers. We also had a lot of recommendations from friends and family and picked our vendors from there.

After saving up a lot of pictures and posts, we started to filter out what theme we preferred and picked out ideas about every small little detail in a wedding. Many of them seemed to be either really expensive to buy off the shelf or had to be shipped in. That was when we both decided we could DIY most of the ideas, since we still had about more than six months to go. We also got lots of inspiration from Pinterest on our DIYs.

There were a lot of roadblocks along the way, definitely, and it was not cheaper eventually. We totally had no regrets though, because all the DIYs brought both of us together a lot more, and made us learn to tolerate each other a lot more as well. It was fun albeit tiring, and the processes were precious memories. It was a pity we did not really photograph a lot of the bits and pieces.

We were so so thankful, even till today, for all the vendors we have met. Lucky us, we met mostly really nice, fun, and kind people, from our Shangri-la Rasa Sentosa wedding coordinator, to the vendors who did our décor, to our wedding day photographer and videographer. They were all so amazing in their own ways!

What was your wedding day like?

Our wedding turned out almost as we expected; the only unexpected thing was there was no wind at all, so you can imagine an outdoor wedding in Singapore! Everything else was under control and even turned out better than we thought it could ever be. The heat did not even seem to really matter anymore.

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?

Jack: My most memorable moment was probably the moment when I stood at the front of the aisle waiting for her to march in. I was super nervous. When she marched in, I got tense, and took a deep breath as I could feel my tears welling up when I started to say my vows.

Jaslyn: I was speechless, and I still could not believe the day had come for us. I had never seen this man this nervous before.

Another emotional moment was when we did our second march in, and we saw all our loved ones standing and waiting along the aisle for us. Seeing our friends and families looking so excited, and from the bottom of their hearts lighting up the sparklers while we walked in, along with the entire backdrop, I think that was when my tears started rolling down and ruined my makeup haha! Everything was just so perfect and beautiful. Who says every big day might have unexpected problems?
