How did the two of you meet?
Alene: We met in college where he was on the student council. His friend was my orientation leader, and we got to know each other better through rugby. He was in the rugby team and I was playing in the touch rugby team. From there, we got closer, and here we are after 11 years.
What was the proposal like?
Akira: It wasn’t exactly a proposal because I didn’t get down on one knee. The plan was to propose at a rugby match in Brisbane—All Blacks vs. Wallabies. But I panicked and misjudged the situation, and thought the game would be cancelled due to bad weather. So in a state of panic, while in a cafe waiting for the rain to go away, I showed her the ring and forced a panicked smile. Up till now, she still wants a proper proposal.
Alene: and I’m still waiting! He got away easy.
What was the theme of your wedding?
Alene: Other than manually separating the fake floral petals that we bought on Taobao, we didn’t hand-make anything. We just wanted our theme to be very simple and classy, and believed that the choice of our venue had already played a big part. Being a beauty blogger who loves her fresh florals with an Instagram husband who had pampered her with flowers since our dating days, we decided to go for a colour palette of mainly white, pink, and gold with some touches of green. I scrapped the idea of a wedding stylist and chose to jump straight into having just a florist decorate our venue. It was to be a very romantic garden luncheon set up – in the comfort of our venue of course. Singapore is sadly too humid to dine outdoors.
What was your wedding day like?
Alene: Our wedding day was everything we envisioned! An intimate set up in the company of our close family and friends. Everyone was mingling and taking pictures and it was smiles all around. There was no gatecrashing nor driving to and fro houses. It was heartwarming to see our bridal party and vendors going out of their way to make everything flow smoothly. We even had Akira’s brother playing songs on the piano for our march-ins instead of the usual choices from Spotify. Our banquet manager was very experienced in ensuring there was no awkward waiting time for our guests too. We still catch ourselves smiling widely as we look back on our actual day pictures.
Can you tell us the cost of your wedding, and your number of guests?
Akira: We had a total of 98 guests and it cost about $16k for the banquet itself.
