The Flamingo Bridal SS17 Collection is Full of Bohemian Elegance
For Spring Summer 2017, Flamingo Bridal unveils a playful and expressive collection of wedding dresses that speaks to the individuality of the modern bride.
Known for lightweight, romantic wedding dresses, designer Shirley Li took Flamingo Bridal’s SS17 collection in a more playful direction with versatile, layered pieces that allow the modern bride to mix and match to create her own look. “I wanted to create gowns that were as light as possible,” says Shirley. Offering brides freedom of movement and expression, the collection features lightweight, flowing silhouettes and layering options that capture the spirit of bohemian romance and allow a bride the freedom of being herself on her wedding day.
Besides traditional wedding gown fabrics such as romantic lace and ethereal tulle, Shirley also worked with unconventional choices such as a Japanese organza fabric that featured eyelet embroidery, to craft a short sheath wedding dress perfect for garden solemnisations, and which transforms into a long gown with a fine mesh skirt overlay that preserves the dress’s lightweight quality. A diaphanous tulle capelet with a pearl necklace added an ethereal quality to a lace bustier with a see-through tulle skirt. Soft, romantic lace was juxtaposed with clean, contemporary lines to create an edgy V-neckline dress with a high-low hem.
While maintaining the signature elegant line and flow of a Flamingo Bridal gown in her SS17 collection, designer Shirley played with less conventional fabrics too, such as using taffeta to sculpt an origami look. “I used a lot of draping techniques instead of the usual drafting, where designs are drawn out flat on paper,” says Shirley. “By draping, I was able to see the dress take shape under my hands, experiment with cut and silhouette, and ensure that the fabrics flow naturally and beautifully.”
The collection is not heavy on applique, as Shirley usually focuses on the elegance created by impeccable cutting, and flattering silhouettes. Unique textures were created by layering intricate Chantilly laces on soft French laces, and detailing took a modern twist with subtly sparkling geometric embellishments, and bold floral petals.
“The Flamingo Bridal SS17 bride is young and carefree, with a bohemian style of simplicity and romance,” describes Shirley. With its lightweight textures, versatile layering, and soft, flowing silhouettes, the collection seeks to inspire brides to be free to express their natural and individual sense of style.
