Singhui and Daniel’s Romantic Pre-Wedding Adventure in Picturesque Norway
Singhui and Daniel got to experience more than just the Northern Lights in scenic Norway when they decided to do a pre-wedding photoshoot in the beautiful, quaint town of Tromsø.
For Singhui, 27, head of partnership, and Daniel, 29, entrepreneur, Europe is a place that holds a special meaning. It was where the pair of lovebirds met during their university exchange program two years ago, so it was only apt that they decided to embark on a pre-wedding photoshoot during a trip to catch the Northern Lights. They braved the frigid -7 degrees weather and thick snow to create a collection of stunning photographs, professionally captured by young Norwegian photographer, Eirik Halvorsen, all while having fun in beautiful Norway. Take a look at their awe-inspiring photographs and read about their photoshoot experience.
How did you meet?
Singhui: Although Daniel and I met briefly in Europe during our exchange programs, we only got to know each other proper after we returned to school in Singapore. We met again at SMU’s library while “studying” via a mutual friend. On hindsight, I think my friend set me up for that meeting because apparently, Daniel wanted to check me out and decided to appear and study with us at the library. Since it was our last year in University, it was less stressful and we had more time to hang out with each other and visit the museums around the school.
What was your proposal like?
My proposal happened in Chiang Mai last year during the Yee Ping Festival under a sky filled with lanterns with a ring pop. One day before the proposal, Daniel told me to pack my bag and proceeded to whisk me off to Chiang Mai. I had no idea what was going to happen! It took him a year to plan for my proposal because the Yee Ping festival is a highly sought after event internationally. He balloted for the event tickets in 2014 and managed to get the VIP tickets for us.
Share with us your pre-wedding photoshoot experience. Were there any challenges you had to face and how did you overcome them? How did you tackle the weather, language barrier etc?
We had a great time exploring the town. Tromsø is a small town, so everyone was so hospitable and warm. Cars stopped to let us shoot while locals came up to us and gave their blessings. Some even helped hold onto my coat while I was shooting. Even after our photoshoot, people recognised us and randomly came up and congratulated us. Since everyone spoke English, there was no language barrier and we could communicate easily.
The weather was extremely cold with temperatures dropping to -7 degrees! The snow was so deep that it came up to my knee, but it turned out that walking in the snow was a major workout and helped in keeping us warm! Of course, having good company and alcohol kept us warm and fuzzy too.
Share with us a behind-the-scenes moment from your photoshoot.
One of Daniel’s favourite movie is “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and he wanted to re-create a scene in it. So, we laid down on the snow in Silje’s backyard for a photo. Even though it was just 15 seconds, it was so cold that we couldn’t feel our limbs after that and Daniel had to warm his limbs up by Silje’s fireplace in the house!
It was also quite an experience lugging around a 3-kg dress around in the thick snow and eating pizza and drinking beer in my dress to keep warm in the middle of the photoshoot!
