Spend Valentine’s Day Like A Classic Movie Star

For some men, Valentine’s Day is an excuse to lavish attention on their partners when they seem to be slacking off during the rest of the year. It’s not a bad excuse, since very few women would say no to flowers, chocolates, and fine dining. But what if you want to do something extra special and meaningful? Take her on a trip and make like Hollywood movie stars.

1. Dazzle like Marilyn Monroe

In 1954, legendary American screen actress Marilyn Monroe and her husband, American baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, honeymooned in Japan. She dazzled fans with a necklace of 44 akoya pearls that were a gift from DiMaggio. Sixty years on, the luminous akoya pearl, one of the world’s most highly valued symbols of elegance, becomes the centerpiece of a romantic package, called Adoring Tokyo, at the Palace Hotel Tokyo.

2. Charm like Charlie Chaplin

In 1936 Charlie Chaplin, an icon of silent film in the early days of Hollywood, took his honeymoon in the Hotel Metropole Hanoi following a secret marriage in Shanghai to the beautiful actress Paulette Goddard. Goddard, at the time, was one of Hollywood’s – and Charlie’s – leading ladies. Couples visiting the iconic hotel can book the Charlie Chaplin suite and luxuriate like the Hollywood couple.

Located on the third floor of the historic Metropole wing, the Charlie Chaplin Suite has an elegant living room with antique style furniture and large louvre windows looking onto the peaceful French quarter. 3. Seduce like Brigitte Bardot

For a trip closer to home, visit Bangkok. In 2013, and around the time of its first anniversary, the elegant Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit hosted an exhibition of iconic photos of 1950s sex symbol Brigitte Bardot.

Often called the French Marilyn Monroe, “BB”, as she became known, made 48 films over a 21-year acting career before leaving the scene in 1973 at the height of her movie career to devote herself to animal rights. If you’re a big fan of the actress and missed the exhibition, you can still find portraits of Bardot in a nook of L’Appart, the hotel’s romantic rooftop bar and restaurant.

You can also retreat to the Imperial Suite for some timeless French elegance with unique contemporary furnishing and artwork. The suite has a large en suite marble bathroom, a study, and a private dining room where intimate dining can be arranged by your personal butler. This is definitely the kind of room Bardot, who was born into a wealthy Parisian family, would approve of.
