Old School Sweethearts
Winners of the Lucky Prize in our Most Memorable Moments Contest, Doreen and Melvin are a fun-loving couple who met when they were secondary school kids. With a shared nostalgic affection for the good ol’ days, they did a lot of their wedding planning and styling on their own. Read on to find out how they pulled it off!
How did the two of you meet?
Melvin: We met each other in our secondary school days. Although most of the time Doreen skipped our secondary school gatherings, as she was so busy with work and school, we have always been in contact through MSN Messenger. One day she actually said she would come for our meet-up, and that’s where the spark ignited. We became close and got together happily ever after!
So you were almost high school sweethearts! How did Melvin propose?
Doreen: Melvin came down to my church and proposed in front of the Auditorium after the church service ended. He walked down distributing balloons with a Mickey Mouse mascot, and then came down the aisle where I was seated and knelt down and proposed to me!
In your winning Most Memorable Moment Contest photo, you looked like you had a lot of fun at your wedding. How did you create it?
Melvin: Wedding preparation was never an easy job, nevertheless it was fun and exciting. Both of us planned it well and the wedding went seamlessly.
Doreen: I did a lot of DIY stuff for the wedding—the sisters’ corsages, brothers’ boutonnieres, and our parents’ corsages. I also decorated the wedding car, the reception table, the vintage bar, the house, and even the solemnization venue on my own. It’s a very customized wedding overall, using a vintage theme as we love vintage stuff. I also used some of SingaporeBrides’ wedding planners and they were really useful!
You must have really enjoyed your wedding day after creating so much of it! How did you actual day go?
Actual day was really good. Weather was good; not too sunny and not raining as well! Gate crashing was fun. What we love the most about our actual day was the two vintage Kombis that we had; they caught the eyes of anyone who walked or drove past.
What did your family and friends have to say about your wedding?
“Best vintage wedding ever!”; “Best DIY décor by the bride”; “Best wedding car I’ve ever seen!”; “I didn’t know you can sing so well!”
They obviously enjoyed it! What about you; were there any moments that were particularly special to you?
Doreen: The most special moment that I remembered about the wedding was the very first walk – in; I was excited yet nervous and panicky as I am always scared of having all eyes focusing on me only!
