Hi shirsweetiepie,

Have you joined a yoga class before? If not, my advice wld be to join a class to learn the proper postures n breathing techniques before investing in a workout video to continue ure practices at home. I started yoga thru watching a DVD (featuring Yoga Zone instructors) and then joined a class later. During the class, I realised that some of my poses weren't correct and was glad tt I learnt the proper way to do it in class. But once u know the right way to do it, then its pretty safe to continue at home using the video to guide u thru.

If u want to find VCDs, I think most VCD/DVD shops like Supreme, Sembawang, Blue Max etc stock yoga workouts. I bought mine (Yoga Zone DVD) from Sembawang Music Centre at Cineleisure. Think Yoga Zone is quite a well known yoga studio in the US. Not sure abt other workout vids from other studios.

Hi Shirlyn,

Try Hatha yoga to start off. I dunno how different instructors conduct their classes, but for the one I attend, the instructor will teach us breathing techniques which are supposed to alleviate or help certain health conditions like asthma, flu etc. Yoga is different fr pilates coz its not just abt toning the body..its also abt meditation, relaxing ure mind and body as well as energizing ure chakras...helping you achieve a healthy body, mind and soul

Sounds deep eh? But its good for us, esp having to live in such a stressful environment.

Hi Shirlyn, I also take up Amore Fitness for 1 - 2 years already. I usually attend classes at Bugis Junction or Bugis Village. Find the yogasanna class by Sharon very good and relaxing. She is also very knowlegeable. You may like to look out for her classes

It depends on how frequently you practise yoga. If u do it only once a week during class, then no, ure not going to slim down. According to my instructor, if you do 50 sun salutations everyday (and the advanced version at that), then yes, it can help u slim down. But mind u, 50 sun salutes is not easy. doing 5 can already cause us to pant and wheeze. It can be a good cardio workout if you do it religiously. Yoga is also great for toning muscles and improving ure flexibility. As for difficulty, it depends on the individual. If ure naturally stiff, then the poses may be more difficult for you. But the instructor shld advise you to go at ure own pace and with time, u'll find the going easier.

hi,
i'm oso taking yoga classes at amore. find that amore does not have many sessions of yoga and the timing is quite odd. so scouting around for new places.

was considering true yoga as they got many yoga sessions to choose fr and the location, but was told that the package price varies for diff consultants. is that true? looking for 3 mths' package with weekly sessions to start with. but a bit worried as understand there are quite many male instructors and may feel uneasy. can anyone share their experience on the diff yoga centre? thks!

I am writing this post to alert people of True Yoga...

I signed up in April with a 6 month contract. Very expensive joining fee and monthly fee, but was willing to pay, due to all the promises made about facilities and classes etc. In June I cancelled my membership, with the possibility of having to return to my home country. However, I was prepared to fulfill the 6 month contract and continue to pay the monthly fees. I went to the centre in June to give them the 2 months notice they require. I filled out the termintation form and thought everything was settled.

Oh no... when I checked my credit card bill, they are still billing me. I've spent the past week on the phone trying to speak to managers and resolve the issue. The girls at the desk have been clueless and most unhelpful - full of lies such as "the manager is out... they'll be back later... they will return your call." Blah, blah. Finally, I go down there and speak to an operations manager. She informs me that no termination form was received, and therefore I'm out of pocket for $250. She also informs me that the centre has no refund policy! What the hell is this about! I ask if it's possible that my termination form was lost in the system. This idea is totally inconceivable to the stupid b**ch. I also point out that I've not attended a class in almost 3 months. Why then would I continue to pay such hugh fees each month and not use the place??? No answer to that.

Well, I'm now taking it to the small claims tribunal. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has had a similar experience and what was the outcome? Any stories would be valued.

Hi Fiona,

I've had a similar experience with True Yoga too. A few months ago, I also went down to terminate my contract due to religious reasons. I too filled up the form and waited for them to contact me but I have waited in vain. I have made a few calls and they promised to get back to me but moths have passed and no reply was received. I even told them I am prepared to take up an alternative such as switching to the pilates reformers class. I'm pretty frustrated and am planning to seek CASE for advice.

Just a query. Do you mean that they are billing you even though your contract has ended?

Hi all,
I have a very bad experience with True Yoga too... I signed up a 24 mth package with them, i thought it was a monthly-payment thingy. Later when my credit card bill came, then i reallize it was a huge sum. True Yoga has deducted the full amount, and I am currently the slave of the bank. I felt they have mis-represented the payment methods, and I did go ahead confront the salesman, but guess what he said, "I have told u wah! anyway true yoga not allow members to terminate their membership. sorry, nothing i can help you." really disappointed, and i feel that it is nt the right attitude towards custermers esp it is right after i signed up e package with him. I know it is impt to push ur sales, but pls do it ethically.

Another bad experience from my friend: true yoga stil deduct money aft her 12-mth contract. And she has to go down personally to sign the termination letter, and wait for them to process ard 3 mth... which means she cant go for yoga, and stil need to pay for another 3 mths.
During tat 3 mths, She wrote emails to True Yoga's Director, Patrick Wee to complain abt the bad customer service... But no reply...then she tried to reach management people from account and operation side. Despite she had called countless times to raffles and pacific outlets, stil no reply... The key person are always uncontactable. They are either “out of officeâ€, “on leaveâ€, “sickâ€, “meeting†or "busy at the moment", then ask her to leave message, said they wld cal her back... Still... u all know the answer... till today the case has finished, stil no one from true yoga management ever call her up.
Personally, we both feel that true yoga are simply SUCKssss......

I am a bit confused over Bikram yoga and another type of B yoga. If I am not wrong Bikram yoga is associated with hot yoga? I tried it, and not everyone suits such a hot environment. I read somewhere that Bikram yoga has a standard no. of poses which I quite a lot, and due to the variations and I enjoyed the lesson a lot. But the heat was really quite unbearable to me. I did it at Yogaaffinity (Telok Ayer / Amoy there)

I attended a Yoga basic course at Sri Perumal Temple and paid $15 for 3 months (lessons are actually free, the $15 is for adminstration fees). There is more than 1 location for the yoga lessons. Hence one can choose a convenient location to attend the classes based on where you live/work. At the end of the basic course, they even give you a certifcate (free). I highly recommend it as the instructors are truly skilful and very professional. The volunteers (mostly Chinese yoga instructors) there will actually guide you personally if any of your posture is wrong or difficult. There is also a very good mix of all ethnic groups for the clasess comprising of about 50 pax. If any of U interested, the website to visit is : http://www.yoganikam.com/

Hi

Anyone has advises on practising yoga... will it have any religious thingy related? I heard that some moves are abit 'religious'? thanks.

Hi barneybaby

Yes Yoga does seems to some people being religious as most steps teaches you to relax and some mediation is involved. But look at it in a positive way as it does help with the blood circulation for the whole body.

Hi Ling

Thanks so much for your feedback...actually i was wondering if it teaches us to relax and mediation...what do you mean the steps might be religious? Do you mean that the instructor will say some religious things during the practise? Or maybe the beginner class is not so religious yet?

So sorry.. just wanted to find out before i sign up a class.

thanks!

Hi barneybaby

No problem. Yes they definitely guide you on the correct breathing methods but its all about relaxing the mind and listening to all the yoga music while you do the exercise.

Think of it as a form of exercise. You can always go for classes at community centre instead of those big centres to have a feel of how it feels. As you would need to commit yourself if you go for those big centres.
