Hi can anyone also advise if it is worthwhile to stop by at Monterey, Solvang, Santa Barbara and Carmel?

I'm deciding between taking a bus that goes directly from LA to SF (6 hours) and taking a tour that stops by at these places, with a night at Santa Maria.

Hi, anyone can share some tips for people planning a trip to Eastern US? Which agencies you went with? Are local tours better? Any best months to go? Thanks in advance!

Hi Babyshannon,
you will need a jacket at night all year round for SF... cos its really cold at night. I went last May and its supposed to be Summer soon... but still, at night, even with a jacket on, i still feeling very very cold...

Hi Littlemay,
the distance between these 2 places are quite far apart... Disneyland is in Anaheim while Universal Studio is downtown...
I would suggest you book a motel at Anaheim for one or two nights and then travel to LA downtown if you dun want to travel far... You can then visit all the interesting places in LA...

My hubby and I are travelling to NY for 2 weeks end April till early May. We plan to go NY, Niagare falls (both US and Canada side). Any other scenic places that we should not miss? Some suggested places are Quebec, Ontario and montreal. Any idea how i should plan my iternary?

At which of these places should i go for factory outlets? I heard in some states, it's tax free?

Hi Mahjong,

I had took Northwest for a few times to the states. overall, i find them quite ok, though the seat can be abit cramped. do sign up for worldperks miles...its very worth it..coz the mileage has no expiry date and can be accumulate very fast.

Another vote for Northwest airline. =)

Take northwest from Spore to USA, the mileage is enough to redeem a free trip to Japan. Or free upgrade to business class on your next trip. =)

Any took the UOB signature card promotion on Northwest to US?

BTW does northwest have personal in-flight entertainment throughout the flight?

How about SQ?

Hi Bao Bao,

I am thinking of using the UOB signature card promo too.
But it cost $1700 for 2 ticket (after 1 for 1 free).
Northwest doesnt have personal in-flight entertainment throughout.

Hi mypuppet,

As far as I know, New Hampshire is the only state that does not have a sales tax. If you are going to NYC-Niagara, Woodbury Common or Waterloo Premium Outlets (www.premiumoutlets.com)are along the way. If you have time, you can visit both, if not, Woodbury would be the one. If you need more resources on planning your trip, you can email me.

Cheers!

not all northwest planes got in-flight entertainment.. I think only for A330 from Singapore to Tokyo and from Tokyo to Portland.

Hi, saw someone asking abt package tours earlier. Thought I can share something. I recently booked an 11 day tour with CTC. Will be flying in April. There are other tour agencies offering the similar packages like Chan Bro, ASA. About a few hundred dollars price difference between them.

personally I still think its worthwhile to take SQ on such long haul flights. Esp now on flights to LA, there is the executive economy flight where the seats are bigger than usual. And for flights to SF, there is the new 777- extended range that has a 15inch flat screen TV for economy class. Really the best of all airlines.
Not to mention of course the many many channels of inflight entertainment, games, music, you can even personalise your own music playlist!
If you are going on a holiday to enjoy, why suffer on the flight when the flight is sooo long?

Hi Jingzlingz,

I did my trip as u described, western part of USA including LA, LV, SF during last Dec. It's winter period but no snowing in California & Nevada. Only thing is, it can be real chilly at night. Road condition throughout SF-LA-LV was as per normal. Only if you intend to visit Grand Canyon when you're at LV, then you have to watch out for snow advisory.

Hi mypuppet,

It's more worthwhile to view the Niagara Falls at Canadian side. Though I have not been to Quebec, I have the impression that Quebec is pretty nice, but note that many locals speak French. If not, Boston is equally nice with old historic architectures. But unlike NYC, Boston doesnt have that many attractions.Alternatively, Washington DC has many grand monuments, and April is the Spring season to see the cherry blossoms there.

Not sure how far you wish to travel, woodsbury is definitely the nearest outlet to NYC. I have been to the other waterloo outlet in NY state, tax there is 4%. I have also been to Tanger Outlet and Rockvale Outlet at Pennslyvania and many shops there do not impose sale tax. Levis at Rockvale Outlet is incredibly cheap.

Hi everyone,

We are planning an F&E trip to SF. Neither of us have been there, so would really appreciate any advice and tips! Where to stay, how much to bring and how to travel around since we both dun drive???

What are the "Must See" attractions in SF? And will 2 - 3 weeks solely for SF be excessive huh?

We also wanna take in some theatre performances (Avenue Q hopefully!) by the A.C.T. - but dunno how to go about buying tickets for performances! :p Can anyone advise?

Finally, would tour agencies offer cheaper airline tickets, than say, buying direct from SQ (or whichever airline)?

hi quak

i just came back from my close to 4 weeks vacation in california (covering SFO, LAS, LAX) and boy, how we wish the trip can be longer! we had a ball of time there!

2-3 weeks in SF is a tad too long, in my opinion. perhaps you can consider going to LAS and LAX if you haven't been there before? we spent 2 weeks in SFO but that was because i had some work commitments there. i think you can cover most of the attractions in SF in 5-7 days depending the pace you prefer.

we rented a car throughout the trip but it is not really necessary to drive in SF. the public transportation is widely accessible and not very expensive. parking is insane expensive in SFO so its not worth it. we paid usd35 per day for overnight parking. duh! you can even walk to some places like the central shopping districts, chinatown, fisherman wharf, etc. my SO and i walked a lot and it was quite bearable and romantic sans the steep slopes and occassionally cold and gusty wind..

i'd recommend hotel fusion to you. its a relatively new hotel located in an oasis in the heart of SFO Union Square, within walking distance to shopping districts and some popular attractions. the beddings/bathroom are new and clean, service is impeccable! two thumbs up for sure!

we got our tickets (2 to go) from SQ. it is slightly pricer compared to other airlines but definitely no regrets with the inflight entertainment and numerous food/snacks served. we were so well fed!

you can read the previous posts from some helpful ladies here. i think irene had given a useful list of where to eat and what to do in her earlier post.

have fun and do heaps of shopping! i was lucky to be there in june and it concides with their semi annual sale! you can't imagine my haul

hope this helps.

oh, i just came back from the West Coast too, LAX, LAS and San Fran...

We took northwest (cos its cheaper) flying from SIN to LA and came back from SFO to SIN... flight was better than expected as the leg from SFO to NRT to SIN had inflight entertainment throughout and the plane was new... =)

We only had 2 weeks there, wished we had more leave and can spend more time there...
In LA, we stayed in Anahiem and covered the theme parks like Disney, California and Universal.. Rented a car to factory outlet and Hollywood for a day of shopping... =) For LAS, and SFO, we did not drive but book local tours there... the only restriction with such tours is that we did not spend enough time in LAS.. But, we extended in SFO and had a great time there just walking around and of cos more shopping (yap it the semi annual sale in June and July)... as szoon mentioned, there is no need to rent a car in SFO cos the public transport is inexpensive and easy enuff... =)

Have fun!! I hope i can cover the east coast next year!! hee hee

Hi Crybaby,i've already sent to u. U got my mail?

Hi De Snowyz, there's no need for visa to USA within a period 3 mths.

Hi Janice, there's a lot of references if you go through previous thread. I can email you a brief outline of my itinerary if you're interested. PM me yr email.

Hi Janice, the accomodation by goto.bus is not those 5 star hotels. All the rooms I stayed in hv 2 beds (cant rem the size but gd enuf for my hubby and me and we r not the skinny type) and the amenities are quite ok. There was one nite where we put up at a 5 star hotel.

As for what places to go, normally ppl will go to Disneyland, Sea World, Universal Studios, San Franciso, LasVegas. Oh, not forgetting Grand Canyon which is a marvel.
