Tung Lok (Group) Restaurant

Greetings!

Anyone tried the Tung Lok Restaurant in Paramount and Hotel New Otani? I need some comments to make a decision between this 2 restaurants. My parents specifically requested for Tung Lok as the food is very nice and it's cantonese too.

Please reply!! Thanks!

Hi Steve,

Have attend my friend's wedding at Tung Lok. Hers was next to Liang Court. So is it Hotel New Otani?

The food is nice, very cantonese style. Some dishes are more oily though. On the hold, the dinner was good! If you have vegetarian guests, their vegetarian dishes are not bad - according to my vegetarian friend.

Steve,

The only thing with the one at Liang Court is if you have many tables, some of your guests will be seated in the VIP rooms....then can only "hear" your wedding, but cannot see, due to all the pillar obstruction. That's what happen to us at my fren's wedding, quite disappointed.

Steve,

i agree with ixwong. have been there to check out the place 2 months ago. the menu is not fantastic as compared to other tung lok restaurants. As for Paramount, the main hall sits 20 tables, the other 17 are hidden behind pillars or in the VIP rooms. but they have got good menu, value for money. the deco is nicer also. How abt Grand Pavillion at Chinese Swimming Club, also from tung lok?

Thanks for your comments! Just to check, how many tables can the main hall occupy (excluding those in the VIP rooms)?

I have also considered the one at Noble House but the minus is that they don't come with a hotel room.

Btw, I'm looking at 32 tables or so. Which do you recommend so that my friends will not be block by the wall?

Steve,
For Grand Pavillion, they will open up all the VIP rooms such that the whole restaurant can accomodate about 34 tables. If remember correctly, one or two tables will be blocked by a pillar. i personally think that of all the tung lok restaurants, they offer the best deal (in terms of price and food, no hotel though, but they can make arrangement at additional cost) Noble House has got the best layout, rectangular hall. Why not try Club Chinois at Orchard Parade hotel? heard many gd comments but quite expensive. Visit these restaurants, that will give u a better idea. Cheers!

Steve,

Although Noble House doesn't come with a room, their dressing room has recently been revamped.

For me, I booked a room separately at Ritz....

If you are looking at Tung Lok, I would suggest that you go to Fort Canning - Marquee. They would accomodate your requirement with comfort. The rest of the Tung Lok restaurants are rather small and have many pillars.

Last I heard, the Marquee at Fort Canning has been torn down. Spice Garden is not doing any wedding banquets this year.

Hi ixwong,
i'm only looking at a min of 20 tables to a max of 25 tables. does tunglok rest. @ New Otani accomodate that in their main hall?
i've taken a look at their menu for this year and found that their choices are excellent and they also throw in a free one nite's stay at a deluxe room, in the hotel itself. hmm..wonder how does this room look like??

however, i'm also doubtful as to whether to hold my wedding dinner in a rest. or not (well, budget wise, maybe) as i've also heard from many friends in this forum that holding it in a rest. may result in unnecessary noise because usually the whole rest. is not for you alone, is for other walk in customers as well!!

any help in this area?

Dear Cleopatra,
The Tung Lok restaurant is at Liang Court (not @ Hotel Otani) The main hall has a wierd shape, with pillars blocking the view. Personally, i dun think it has a ideal layout for weddings, but.....the food is gd. why dun you try Grand pavillion or The Paramount restaurant. also from tung lok, these places are much better and have better menu at reasonable prices. if you are worried abt sharing the rest with walk-in customers, then get a small restaurant. I think there is a Chinese rest at Hotel Otani (is it tai-pan ken) and it can accomodate abt 25 tables. It is best to visit the places personally, sometimes pictures from magazines can be quite deceiving. Gd luck.

hi swiss
you hv been to the Grand pavillion and paramount? which one do you think it look nicer? please advise me cos i am trying to decide thank you.

Cleopatra,

I never been to the room at New Otani, but liks Swiss says, the shape of Tung Lok rest is a little irregular. U better check it out yourself.

For NobleHouse, I booked the main hall, including the cocktail area. So they are not going to cater those space for walk-in guests. Only the VIP rooms at the side are opened for walk-in, but the noise shd be minimal with all that partition. Their KTV rooms are located at the opp end - so no impact at all.

Guess there's always going to be some trade-off bet Hotel & restaurant. I have been to hotel where they hold multiple weddings on same day, sharing the same stretch of reception area.....

Do consider what are your priorities in your decision-making. For me, food and cost are top considerations.

Hi Milo,
Have you been to Noble House b4? Paramount looks just like it, but smaller. Actually, paramount looks nicer. But i think GP has got a better menu, the cost is also slightly lower. It depends on what you want. Paramount looks like a Chinese teahouse. They provide white seat covers and projector, quite a gd deal. I chose GP becos of the food and the price. The place is not extremely beautiful, (it looks like a "pavilion",very chinese), but i dun mind. i am going to have chic chinoises as my theme. Go take a look b4 you decide, both rest are near each other.

hi swiss
thanks for your advised. but one more qns : if i were to go and see the place do i have to make appt? and should i go when they are having a wedding on that day or just any days will do? i ever tried going to the one at liang court without appt. they didn't bother about me when i was there so it left me a very bad impression about their svc... but advise me thanks in advanced

Hi milo,
Do call to make an appointment, or at least give them a call to say that you will pop in an hour later. These rest are usually packed at night esp wkends. Go during off-peak hours, so that they can give you all the attention you need. They will even offer you drinks. They tend to be more friendly when they are free. GP did let me go and see the deco on a wedding day, but that's b4 the dinner. personally i dun think it's nice to go when someone is having a wedding dinner. It's a private gathering.
My wedding is on 5/5. I will be arranging for food tasting pretty soon. hope that everything will be fine. Enjoy yr wedding preparation.

Hi swiss,

I like GP too. The food is nice and better value-for-money, except it's bit far for me 'cos most of my frens (as well as myself) are Northern-ers.... transportation will be a problem to get to Swimmming Club.

hi swiss and ixwong
thanks for giving me you comments, i really value it

btw swiss the theme that you've mention wat is it all about? sound interesting ;)

Hi Milo,
The theme.....it is basically to make the whole event very "cheena". GP has a very traditional chinese look, and furthermore it is in Chinese Swimming Club, so even more oriental. instead of trying to transform it into something drastically different, we decided to play along with it. So will be playing modern chinese orchestra music. There will also be red lanterns and "mei hua".very nostalgic.I will be wearing a cheong sum too. I hope things will be fine.

For ppl who have visited that Tung lok at Lian court, wat do u felt abt the stage? IF i didn't see the wrong thing, it was dark red curtain & gold dragon & the big word "ci" in the centre, all in gold letter. The dunny ckae was small, old & look kinda pity. I know the fd was gd but I was pissed off when I saw the stage, so I told my FH to drop off from my list. U ppl felt the same too?

Hi there

I will be dropping by Tong Lok(at otani) tomorrow.
Wonder what can i bargain for.So far quoted me $468nett,no free flow of beer and this also the cheapest menu with no abalone.Anyone ever got quote from them?

Hi,
Is it possible to get tunglok's food in New Otani but held the banquet in New Otani's Hotel ballroom instead of the restaurant. How much more will i have to pay extra?

Hi All,

Anybody know abt Fort Canning - Marquee. Heard that it was quite good. How was the food there ..... anybody knows.....

Thnks for your comments.

hi ling,

there is no more marquee for mths as the government did not approve to it... the next place we know of that have a similiar setup is @ the turf club.

u may try there.

Hi May03,

Did you choose Tunglok Seafood Gallery? Did you get any feedback? When is your wedding date?

Just attended a wedding at Yunglok imperial, former spark disco!

Food - NICE, but serving small.

Atomsphere - Table decor/ class, they only renovate. the hall completely esp. the stage and BIG bar counter, lightings still around. I use to visit that place thats why it keep reminding me that i'm in a disco. also the bride and bridegroom have to do z-z to reach their table.

Parking - Pay $3,cashcard, no refund.

did not ask about the price per table and how many table they can accomandate
