Tasmania - DIY!

Hi folks,

I'm planning my 2-week honeymoon (hopefully can stretch to 3 weeks) to Tasmania in late March.

We want a self-drive holiday so that we can take our time to explore the various places of interest.

What are the must-see-must-go places?

Are there any good package deals out there which includes airfare, accomodation, car-rental, etc?

What's the weather like in late March? What's the sunrise and sunset times?

Love to hear your sharing and experiences!

Cheers,
Neighbor :-)

WHOA! There's an over-whelming response here that i can't cope with.

Can i just mail the write-up to those who have ALREADY decided on visiting Tasmania and need help with planning?

Those who are only CONSIDERING, pls read the travel guidebooks, visit the Aust Travel Commission or surf to Tas's travel website for more details.

Apologies,
cody

Hi pepsi, me and a few frens are currently planning to go tas and melbourne in dec too! How many days you are planning to stay there?

Hi cody, can you send a copy of your write-up to me as well? email is [email protected]
Thanks much!

hiyee..can someone please help?
I will be going to Tasmania at the end of this month and will be taking a flight from S'pore to Melbourne and then taking a domestic flight to Hobart.
There are some queries which I hope someone can help me with:
1. I will be taking Qantas domestic flight to Hobart from Melbourne, but I am not sure whether do I have to check out with my luggages (if I check in my luggage) and then check in again for my domestic flight?
2. Is the Qantas domestic flight area near to the international flight area?

Thanks!

hi garfield,

Qn1: yes, you will have to check in your luggage separately from your sin-mel flight to your mel-hbt flight.

Qn2: the domestic terminal is a separate building from the international terminal. There are clear signs showing you the way, no worries. Be sure to get some coins tho, coz the trolleys there are payable at A$4 each.

have fun!

how many days (minimum) do we need for Tasmania?
which part is more interesting?

initially plan to go Melbourne next Feb, but hubby says why not go Tasmania since i've been to Melbourne...

i would say the east coast of tasmania has more to see.
i would recommend minimum 8 days, but again this is subjective coz it really depends on what you want to see / do.

hi gals
came back from my honeymoon in Tasmania!
Tassie is a very lovely place, fantastic for honeymoon. the people there are really friendly and very nice!
we didn't drive in tassie as my hubby just got his license and tassie is very mountainous

just to share our itinerary in case you are interested to visit tassie. We did F&E.

from melbourne, take connecting flight to hobart

1st Day
- visit Cadbury Chocolate Factory, can take their metro public bus from Hobart city - 45 min journey. Or you can take their cruise tour.
evening explore sandy bay. we stayed at a very lovely B&B at sandy bay! 94AUD per nite, big room with ensuite and breakfast. It's a cottage, my host knew that we were on HM and went the extra mile to make our stay memorable with wine, chocolates and sweets, complimentary.
- evening, franklin wharf and constitution dock for the sunset

2nd Day
- full day at Port Arthur, if you like history, you will like this place for the convicts. lovely scenery. Visited the Bushmill Settlement to take the steam railway, and also Devils Kitchen, Eaglehawk neck and Blowhole and Barilla Bay Oyster Factory. We joined Exp Tas for this tour and the tour guide cum driver was very funny and yeah, it was a great day for us, managed to interact with other tourists from england and other parts of aussie.
Day 3
- Battery Point, Rosny Lookout, Cascade Brewery, Female Factory cum Fudge Factory.
- afternoon went to Bonorong wildlife park.
- evening, went Wrest Point Casino.

Day 4
- took a local tour. 3 hrs drive to East coast, visited Swansea, very lovely quiet town.
- wineglass bay, the hazards at freycinet national park. we embarked on the 4 hours trekking. it was very tiring for me as i am not a very outdoor person but the scenery is simply breathtaking!
- stopped at Kate's Berry Farm along the way. A must stop if you are at Tassie! great ice cream and jams and berries! She's a very nice lady.

Day 5
- Salamanca Market , but just be careful, although the brochures said it's from 8.30am til 3pm. but by 12plus and 1pm, about 60% of teh stalls were starting to pack up. so come early! bought a lot of things there!!
- spent the whole afternoon shopping at their city area.

Day 6
- Royal Tasmania Botanical Gardens. Must See during Sept and Oct! although their tulips fest just ended when we arrived, but the tulips were still in full bloom in the botanic gardens! lovely! yellow, purple, pink, red, orange and white! beautiful! you will feel like you are in Holland!
- afternoon, went to Sorell , another small town very near hobart and visited a fruit farm. Sorell Fruit Farm.
- Then spent the aftern at Richmond, very very lovely and historic town, abt 20 mins away from Hobart.

abit pity, didn't manage to go up Mt Welllington, cos it was snowing on the mountains and it was very very cold. the average temperature last week for tassie was about 7-12degree when we were there. the wind is very chilly. and some days it was drizzling.

i think if you are driving, you would definitely more chance to vist more places, e.g. Bicheno and St Helens which i read from the brochures, these places seem very beautiful. You can stay bed & breadkfast all the way in tassie, if you are not on tight budget, 90AUD p/n will get you a good cottage room with ensuite and breakfast.
and most accept credit cards

oh yeah, change all your $$ in spore first, the rates are horrible over there. it was 1.17 in spore but it was 1.28 - 1.35 in tassie. not worth it.

for meals, if you like chocolate, you will go crazy like me. i was like on a chocolate-wine-ice cream diet during my stay in tassie!

they got great seafood, try barilla bay oysters, we went to Frenzy Fish and Mures at their waterfront for their fish and chips and scallops!

for wine, must go for their strawberry and rashpberry wine!

for ice cream it will sticky fingers ice cream parlor in hobart and Kate's Berry Ice Cream in Swansea.

great scones at most of their bakery and they serve with cream and fruit jams.

we also had good chinese food along sandy bay.

okie dokie, sorry for the long winded email. think this is my longest postings! =). kekeke. too eager to share my tassie honeymoon. only stayed for 1 week but throughly enjoyed it. we stopover at sydney for another 5 days. But sydney is very much a city, i definitely preferred Tassie! really hope to trek in Cradle Mountain and visit St Helens, Strahan, Lauceston next time! meanwhile, it's back to reality for me!

Hi bortei,
so how much did you spend for your trip in tasmania...thinking of F&E too....but same as you just gotten our licence and din want to be overly stressed up with driving....

did you book your accomodation here? through agency or internet? any good recommendations for tour agency that yu went to?

bortei,
thanks for ur info!!

did u travel all by public transport, or all are by local tours?

how much did u spend in total? i mean, airtix, accom, tours...

Hi blurfairy and angelia

total me and hubby spent 5.7K in all (airtixs, accomodation, shopping, food everything inclusive) for our 2 weeks honeymoon.1 week tassie and 1 week sydney

airtickets -$1110 (with taxes, domestic flights)

i bought my airticket from Hong Thai travel, they quote me the cheapest, $960 and then with $150 airport taxes. the rest all quote me abt $1200 just for the air ticket.

for hobart in tassie, i highly recommend Experience Tasmania Tour Agency for their day tours.
http://www.experiencetas.com.au/test.html

the other one is http://www.tigerline.com.au/
tigerline has coaches to the other parts of tassie.

i booked my accomodation via internet, u can key discover tasmania in search engine and it contains lotsa info on tassie lodging, esp B&B.

i travel by public buses around hobart and richmond and sorell, but to further areas, i joined their local day tours, we took 3 day tours altogether. =)

Hi gals,

I just came back fm my Tassie honeymoon too. Went on F&E. Its very enjoyable as we drove fm Hobart (visited my uni, ate oysters, scallops, calamari & seafood), travel up the EastCoast where we pass Sorell Fruit Farm, to Swansea (their ice cream is fantastic) then to Bicheno (finally saw a penguin, go-karting, le frog ride, ate very cheap & fresh abalone). We didnt' travel via St. Mary's route as its really long & winding so took the other alternative route up to Launceston. Book a day tour to Craddle Mountain & Dove Lake.

Just developed & showed some of my pics to my colleagues. They loved the place too cos its really scenic. My FIL comment that some of the pics taken looks like post card. Very nice!

Road condition is okay to drive just that it is more winding than other parts of Australia.

So gals, those who intend to go there, enjoy the food & scenery.

Hi Bortei

Wow, you're very descriptive, made me want to drool. I'm considering going Melbourne & Tasmania for my honeymoon in early March.

The only concern is the exchange rates going up for A$....hopes it will go down soon!

I'm looking at what you did, no drive too.

Hi all.. Tassie is indeed beautiful.... believe me cos i studied there for 2 years in UTas... some places that i will strongly recommend are :

1) a walk thro' Battery Point..just a stone throw away from Salamanca Market..needless to say... a vist to the Apple isle isn't complete without a vist to the famous Salamanca Market..

2) Wharf...opp Salamanca/hotel grand chancellor
Enjoy cheap and good seafood.. there's Mures.. (try the ice-cream...it's yummy)...Mako and
Flippers.. (delicious fish 'n' chips)

3)Mt Wellington offers a good view of hohart but everything look so tiny... Mt Nelson (near the uni) also has a good view of the city.

4) Port Arthur.. do go for the Ghost tour at nite if possible.. Tassies are good story tellers.... expect to feel a chill down your spine.

5)Feycinet Nationl Park (NE of hoart) - wineglass bay

6)Bicheno.. there's really no need to spend extra on penguin... it's free... just head down to the blow hole.. and wait patiently.. do bring ur torch but dun shine directly...u will damage their eyesight.. penguin are timid creatures..probably u will hear them first before seeing them... good luck..

7)Bruny Island... if u have the time ... do spend a nite there... i stayed at Adventure Bay... this is one of the best place if you like tranquility..nothing much to do at the island though..but... there's a place where u can pick free oysters... (hee...)

8)If u go during Dec/Jan... a place definitely worth visiting is the Bridgestowe Lavender Farm...

9) oh yeah...btw..not much shopping in Tassie... but if u happened to be in the city area... try the pasta at Little Italy's... (opp Espirt)..

should anyone need more info... i'll be glad to provide... i hope i still remember...

Breathe the freshest air... drink the purest water.. in Tassie...

hi just a tiny voice.
kekek, i also wanna drool everytime i think of my honeymoon, the food and all aspects of tassie!

i will keep my fingers crossed for you abt the exchange rate, hopefully it will go down. =)

Hi,

I am planning to to Tasmania coming June...which is during their winter time. Anyway recommendation on what can do and where to go during the cold and short day time period?

Thank you.

Hi Yves,
Thanks for sharing the photos.
They are very scenic and can imagine.

Hi Ivy,

Are you at the Horbart's campus??
Went with my hubby to the convocation last Aug at Launceston.. Din got time to go to Horbart's campus. Planning to go to the hobart one. He is looking forward to see the place.
Will check with you on further information when near the dates that I am planning to travel there.

Hi Gakusei,

There is a chinese programme on Taz next Tues at channel 8 at 8pm. So you can see what taz have..

Hi kk,
yah...I'm at d Hobart campus. no problem, if u need more info, will be happy to provide.

cheers...

kk,

Great that u enjoy them.. Nice place.. I still missing the honeymoon times, which is only 4 months ago!! haiz, need a break from work..

Hi Yves,

Me and hubby already start missing the place now.. we were a bit sad when we had to leave the place.. It was so peaceful.. it was like totally "detached" from the world. no worries... My hubby even tot of migrating there..

Hi Ivy,
What course you taking up there?? One of my hubby's classmate went there for full time the last semster.

Hi kk

I did Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing n IS)
Very few Singaporeans went there..normally they will opt for QUT, UNSW, UWA... but i visited Tassie in 1997 ...fall in love and decided to enrol with UTAS. The environment is really conducive for studies...

Ivy,

Aiyoh..
Think she did the same one... She's called Megan..
yah. grad last year. very few Singaporean went there.. Even the Launceston campuses has a few too.

hi
what's the best month travelling to tasmania?
i am thinking of going there in september, advisable? how many days to be spent there is the best?

best time to visit is in summer, fr dec to mid-feb.
however, summer is also the island's peak period, so accommodation etc will be more expensive.

Sep is fine, just that the temperature is nicest in summer (remember that Tas is always colder than mainland Aus) and the lavender farms, wild flowers etc will be in full bloom in summer.

Note that lavender is harvested in early Feb, so if you want to see it, try to go in Jan.

how many days to go depends on how you intend to get around and what your areas of interest are.
Essentially tas is all about history, flora and fauna. 7 days will be sufficient to cover the east coast, 10 if you want to take it slow and easy.

thanks cody.
you still have the write up with you? could send to me? ([email protected])

ya, i wanna see the lavender farm.... jan will be near to CNY liao.

any interesting event on in sept over there? what's the temperature in jan and sept?
and is there any place for ski?

i'll send you the write-up later. pls check your account after lunch.

well, you should still be able to see some lavender, but they won't be as pretty as what you see on the brouchures.

there're some good websites where you can do research:

http://www.tasmaniatravel.com/
http://www.discovertasmania.com.au
http://www.australia.com/

Skiing, i'm not sure abt sep but i dun think there's any snow in Jan. Having said that, the summer in Tas is still quite cold. Best to check with the travel desk of the above websites.

Hi Cody,

Wld u mind sending a copy of your write-up for me too? my email is [email protected]
I will be honeymooning Tas in Sep too.
Thank u!

Btw, can anyone of u recommend some cheap and cosy B&B that are located in the city of Hobart and Launceston? There are so many in the Yahoo search engine but i wld prefer to seek recommendations fr those who have stayed there b4.....safer mah! heehee....

thanks cody.
happy.gif
i hope the exchange rate will go down by then.

there is no direct flight to tasmania, right? need to trf either from sydney or melbourne? should i book the ticket to tasmania here or i should book the ticket to melbourne/sydney then buy ticket from melbourne/sydney to fly to tasmania?

sorry har, lots of quetions.

only SQ has direct flights fr here to Tasmania, but its only available during the school hols where the entire plane is chartered by travel agents.

the best way is to fly to Melb, and then fr there fly to Tas. The journey will only take abt 90mins, and since most air ticket prices to SYD and MEL are about the same, MEL will be a better choice.

There is also a ferry service fr MEL to Tas, but it is an overnight service and the water is very very choppy. Not advisable....

You can buy your MEL-TAS air ticket online.
Qantas and Virgin often have tickets on offer, sometimes as cheap at $59 one-way. Dun fret if you can't get the discounted tickets, the normal price is only about $89 i think.

Hi Cody,

Thks for your comprehensive write-up :-)

I shall use your guide to make sure i cover most of the places u listed.

Me n my hubby wun be driving... we actually thot of joining the day tours there....ie, just stay in Hobart for 7-8 days, going for a diff tour each day. n then move on to Launceston for another 6-7 days, joining the day tours there too... so in total, i only need 2 places for accomodation....wat do u think of this idea? feasible??

our plans r more or less settled except for the accomodation (finding cheap B&B) and flights....can't wait to go now but we hv work commitments....sigh....

anyone has something to share??
