Hi Germangal

Thank you for the informations. Cin is right you have really help those of us planning our trips to Switzerland
happy.gif

Does swiss pass include travel via Glacier Express & Panoramic Express?? Also, how much swiss franc should we carry throughout 9 days? There are so many mountains in Switzerland, we thought of going to Schilthorn / piz gloria & Jungfraujoch...Is mount titlis & mount pilatus worth of going as well? Coz will these mountains all look identical?

Hi Moonlight
Yap, we just got our air tickets and swiss saver pass on Friday and accomodation also confirm .....
happy.gif

One more question, how long it takes to travel from interlaken to Zermatt ? And interlaken to Geeneva? Since we travelling during winter, days are shorter, we afraid that alot of time will be spend on travelling .......... Thanks in advance

hi whitebear,

u going to switzerland too? free and easy, when? have u got your tickets? i intend to go in april cos i am very scared of cold. have u got your tickets? germangal has helped me to roughly plan my routes. if u r interested, can email me at [email protected].

Hi Whitebear,

as far as I know, you get a discount on the panoramic trains.

The mountains look similar, the one which is really different and famous is the Matterhorn in Zermatt. If you don´t have much time, I think I would rather visit one or two of those mountains and then decide whether you like it so much as to go up on another one.

From Interlaken to Zermatt it takes between 3 hours and 10 Minutes and 3 and a half hours. Trains run very frequently and you need to change trains 2 or 3 times.

From Interlaken to Geneva it takes 3 hours and you need to change 1 or 2 times.

If you need to check any specific timings, you can go to:

www.sbb.ch that´s the official web site of the swiss train system, it´s also available in english and tells you all the details.

When are you actually going to Switzerland? I´ll be going for 5 days in early march to the wedding of my best friend - it will be so good
to be back in Switzerland! The laws have changed since I left the country and I might even be going back to my old job there!!! So exciting!

Dear All,

I can't help but add my 2-cents worth of Swiss Experience. My HB and I went on a 10-day trip to Swiss last Nov. Our route was Zurich, Interlaken and from Interlaken as a base, we went to Bern, Thun, Spiez. Of course, we went to Jungfrau (travelled from Interlaken West station). THen we proceeded to Zermatt, Lausanne, Geneva, Lucerne and back to Zurich to catch our flight. We felt that 10 days wasn't enough to fully enjoy the beauty. 12-14 days would be good. We checked the Swiss Rail for price and timing. For those of you going on a FnE, it would be good to download all the time-tables of the trains and ferries from this website, http://www.sbb.ch. It's very informative... gives you the time needed to travel from one place to another. If you need to go to Chateau de Chillon, take a train there and then a short scenic walk to the Chateau. I can't remember the name of the station but it's very very near. Do not worry about spending too much time travelling. You will enjoy the scenery!! One thing for sure, the food is very expensive in Switzerland. My HB and I shopped mainly at Migros for our dinners. The in-house biscotti is very good!! If you like to have more details, do visit Cupid Travels at Far East Plaza on the 4th floor. Fanny, the General Manager, was most helpful in booking the most reasonable swiss pass, air tickets, hotels. She would work within your budget. If you like to have more details, please email me at [email protected] Enjoy your swiss holiday.... you won't regret it!!

Hi Cin

Just sent you an email. Thank you so much
happy.gif
Hope to receive your route plan soon as we are flying offer tomorrow evening. Are you staying in B&B or hotels? Hopefully when am back, i can share some nice scenery photos with you
happy.gif

Hi Germangirl

My hubby & I will be going tomorrow........So excited. Actually, we plan to go in early march but I have work project going on in march, thus cannot take 2 weeks leave. What a pity, otherwise you can be our tour guide
happy.gif
We roughly know which are the place of interest but just worried that too much time spend in travelling. For example, from interlaken to zermatt, you mentioned more than 3 hours which means we will be spending 6 hours plus to and return.....
sad.gif
Dun know whether is it a wise choice to make interaken west as our base in the first place or not........Glad that you are going back working in Switzerland, believe it is a wonderful experience working in such a beautiful and peaceful country .....

Hi Whitebear,

this is so exciting! I hope you`ll have a wonderful vacation!

Days are not that short anymore, and I always actually enjoyed traveling by train - you really get to see the scenery on the way as well.

One possibility would be to take an early train in the morning, to see the scenery and then have dinner at the place you are visiting to spent a maximum of time in daylight. On the way back (in the dark ?) you can just relax, write postcards or read a travel book about the next days´ place of visit.

That´s what I used to do on my days off and I found the time sufficient.

Interlaken is a very nice town and centrally located. Zermatt is a tricky place to visit, coz it´s so high up in the mountains. The fast trains cannot run on many of the tracks and you need to change trains, that´s why the travel time is quite long. It should work out much better when traveling to towns.

Have fun and the best of vacations!!!

Hi

I've a question here. Hope someone can help.

For those of you who are F&E travellers to Switzerland, how do you go from the airport / train station to your hotel, if you are carrying a luggage? Do you take the bus / cab ?

Thanks very much!

Hi Hedwig,

it basically depends on your airport and the location of your hotel.

There are only two international airports in Switzerland: Geneva and Zürich.

If you arrive in Geneva, the cheapest and fastest option is to take the train. The airport got it´s own train station and ALL trains go to Geneva main train station. From there it depends on the location of your hotel. A cab might be the easiest option for your first steps in Switzerland.

The bus system is very good and punctual, so it might be worth asking the information desk at the airport or train station, you might be lucky and there is a bus going directly to your hotel.
Or your hotel is located near the airport, so no use going to the main station...

Most probably you will land in Zürich, there it is nearly the same. For detailed information, you can check out the airport web site:

www.zurich-airport.com

if you click "your route" you will find bus and train information.

Hi Germangirl

Thanks!

Do the buses in Switzerland allow travellers like us to take a suitcase type of luggage up the bus?

One other question, I'm quite confused about the train stations. I've seen a map of the Swiss Travel System at http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/netzkarte.pdf

In that map I saw a train station call Luzern, and another train station call "Gutsch D" just before that. Is that a train station in the state capital of Luzern or another town, away from Luzern?

Many thanks...

Hi Hedwig,

a suitcase should be no problem, I always took my luggage on the bus and saw other people do it as well.

The Gütsch is a castle type of building above Luzern. The train station might be either a second train station apart from the main train station, or actually indicating the train or cable car (I don´t remember) which is going up to the building.

Gütsch is definetly in Luzern, but a bit on the outskirts.

Hi all,

Will really like to visit Switzerland for my honeymoon.
Is it true that the branded stuffs there is much cheaper than in S'pore? What are the branded stuffs there?
Any really must go plcs? Sure must eat food?
Is it a accessible plc like S'pore?
Roughly average how much to bring in order to enjoy the tour. Budget around $5-6K including airfare.
If u hv additional info to share with me pls email to the following address. Tks in advance.
Email [email protected]

hi mr lost,

switzerland is one of the most expensive place to go in europe because of their high living standard. but its a beautiful place to go.

u can get alot of branded watches like rolex there. but due to the exchange rate, its not much cheaper.

from i have gathered, air tickets will be abt:
sq = 1650
air france = 1250

as for hotel stay, the range is abt 160 and above. quite an expensive place to go. but the scenery and culture makes it very worthwhile.: )

hi mr lost,

switzerland is the most expensive country in europe. it's not worth to buy branded goods, even non-branded goods.

Just to let you know some of the costs:
Return airfare between sg and swiss = $1980 for lufthansa
Macdonald meal = CHF $11.90
Other meals = expect to spend more than CHF $15
Tram (per trip, valid for 60 mins) = CHF $3
Hotel (3*) = Around CHF$120 - CHF$200
Train rides to other towns (return trip) = CHF $40 to nearby town...price increase with length of journey.
Cheapest swatch watch = CHF $60

Say, the exchange rate is CHF $1 = S$1.40, you'll roughly be able to gauge your budget.

There are various kinds of transport and all are very efficient. Cabs are for rich people, the moment you hop on one will cost you CHF $6.50 and the meter seems to jump by the second. Merely a 5 mins cab ride will cost you abt CHF $27. So the best option is to take either train, tram or bus.

They are good in making cheeses and chocolates. You wld also like to try their fondue. I've tasted one but it was horrible...probably i've went to a wrong restaurant (manned by italian).

it's a romantic place to go to. you'll sure enjoy your trip.

Hi Cin/DingDong,

Tks for the info.
Then i better thk twice b4 visting there. Maybe when i save enough. Thking of changeing my trip to Japan then.
Anyway my honeymoon is in End Sep.
I thk Japan shd be a nice plc to visit.
Any other plc which is nice to go?

Hi All,

Just came back from Switzerland. Wow, Switzerland is really a beautiful place to visit, although the weather was very very cold, we thought it was an experience to travel during winter...

No regrets in converting our original tour package to free & easy, becos we have cover more cities & places in this way with our swiss pass. We are quite thrifty throughout the whole journey, therefore, we only spend about 4.5K for 9 nites stay in swiss which consider very cheap for 2 persons.

Just to share a bit more, we have save alot in the air fares by flying Malaysia airlines. Only cost about $859 with return(including airport tax) per person during their promotion. Only disadvantage is the need to transit in KL, not direct flight, also there could be delays taking off by 15-30 mins. Their meals & services are not bad...............
From Sing - KL by airbus takes 45 mins, transit time about 2 hours.
From KL - Zurich by Boeing 777 plane (same type of plane as Singapore airline SQ with indiviual tv screen for movies & games for your selection) takes 12 hours.

There was another promotion for travel in Europe in period of May, think only $785 (including airport tax)by malaysia airlines which can book online or thru tour agency.

hi all,
i've oreadi booked package to switzeland, paris n london...any advice? any special attraction in swith tat i cannot miz?

Hi gals,

I am also planning to visit Switerland plus another nearby country..over say 12 days. Which agency offer a better package in terms of itinerary and pricing? First time in Europe and will not dare to go F&E but will like to extend a few days in another country (France/Germany/Italy) exploring ourselves. Which country is better? Btw, my wedding is in Oct..so is it a good time to go?

Germany is a nice country to extend your stay. Preferably get Free n' Easy for Switzerland so you get some nites included cos the hotel rates there will kill you. And everything else too, like food.
Oct-- good, its starting of Autumn, nice foliage.

D woof, which part of switzerland are you going? Since its a tour package, most likely its Zurich, Interlaken, Lucerne? Otherwise you can go to Zermatt where the Matterhorn is.

1) Welcome Inn (Zurich) - Holbergstr. 1, 8302 Zurich Kloten

2 ) Spatz (Luzern) - Obergundstr,103,6005

Can some1 tell me if this location is good? Near Railway?

hi gals,

i be going to switzerland this april. mine is a free n easy tour. i passed my itinerary to a local tour agent so that she will help me to book the hotels at each "base" i am staying.

reason being, i dun feel safe going to the net n book a couple of different hotels using my credit card. if i am staying at one hotel, i dun mind. as i am on the move most the time, i thk i thk i will feel more assure to let the agent to book for me. of cos it will be abit more ex, but its for the peace of mind. : )

hi all, i'm thinking of going switzerland for my honeymoon. Seems like it's an expensive place to go, and i heard that going up the mountains can cost quite a bit.

On average, how much does it cost for a 2-wk visit? Any must visit places?

Was also thinking of going to Austria and Italy since we are there. Understand that there are some travel agents that can help to arrange F&E packages, has anyone here tried them?

appreciate all your advice!

Hi all!

I just came back from a long weekend in Switzerland!

My friends wedding was beautiful, but very stressy, since she relied on me for most of the organisation.

We had snow falling each day except for the last day, which is very unusual for Geneva (Lake Geneva´s "Lake Effect" keeps the area too warm for lots of snow). It was beautiful and I will post some pics as soon as I get them developed.

Hi, cindy, I will email you tomorrow...now got to catch up on some sleep :-)

Germangirl: I have booked accomoodation for my switzerland trip in May. Can i check with u whether the location is good and easy to find fr the railway station?

In Zurich : Arlette beim Hauptbahnhof
Address : Stampfenbachstr. 26, 8001 Zurich .

In Luzern : Spatz
Address: Obergrundstr. 103, 6005 Luzern.

These two hotels i mentioned which station must i get off from? Easy to reach by walking?

I am also looking for Interlaken hotel near Interlaken Ost.

I will be spending 1-2 nights in Zurich, 2 nights in Luzern & 2 nights in Interlaken. After which i will proceed to Paris & Barcelona.

Hope to hear fr u real soon. Thanks a lot!

Germangirl: I also would like to know what is the weather like in 3 week of May? Will i need a winter jacket? As i heard that Swiss area can be quite cold all yr round. Especially if i going up mount titis or mount Jaungfrau.

Germangirl :

1 more accomodation i came across in Zurich :

OLYMPIA
Address: Badenerstrasse 324, 8040 Zürich
Is it much nearer to the station than
Arlette beim Hauptbahnhof?

I need to stay near the station as my lugguage would be heavy.

Thanks alot!

i am going to join a land tour in switzerland and extend one more night myself in zurich.

anyone any idea where is a good place to get branded watches at a cheaper price?

Hi gals

Germangirl: I waiting for ur replies to my above questions... :P

cin: Btw, how to u travel to the hotel? Does Cupid Travel arrange any shuttle bus fr the airport for u to the hotel????

Can i call and enquire how much is the average hotels in zurich, luzern, interlaken, paris & barcelona?

Hi i bless u,

I found Stampfenbachstr. in Zürich, which is really centrally located, just around the corner from the train station, which they should be, because "Hauptbahnhof" means main train station, so they shouldn´t be cheating and be located on the far end of the street.

I couldn´t find the hotel Olympia, but since the postal code is very different from hotel Arlette, it should be on the outskirts of Zürich...

If Zürich Kloten is mentioned, then it´s always near the airport (the airport´s name is Kloten).

A good resource for locating hotels is www.myswitzerland.com "destinations and regions" with maps of most places. They also got lists of hotels everywhere in all price categories.

They also have "affordable swiss hotels" prices from 50 swiss francs per person sharing a double room. Mostly typical family run guesthouses with 5 to 20 rooms as far as I could see, many of them in very nice typical buildings, some even historic.

Hotel Spatz seems to be rather far from the train station, the map was kinda hard to navigate.

I looked up 3-star hotels on www.luzern.ch

The only hotel I found near the station (2 min) was :

Hotel Waldstätterhof
Zentralstr. 4
6003 Luzern

It can be booked online via that web page.

In the 3rd week of may, it should be mostly mild, even sunny or warm in some places. On top of a high mountain you would still need something like a T-shirt, a light sweater and a light jacket on top of it, but I remember 3rd week of may as T-shirt, skirt and sandals, but can get chilly so a light sweater should definetly go into your luggage.

Hope I found all your questions, if I missed any, please let me know... :-)

Hi vivian,

I have absolutely no complaints about swiss nightlife. As far as the small towns and bigger towns are concerned at least. In Geneva there are night clubs for every taste of music, I even went to an ethiopian club with one of my colleagues... The rest is mostly Salsa, R&B or mixed music.

Restaurants and Bars are always there, and if you go in late spring, summer or early autumn, you will have people sitting in the street cafes even at night.

Basel, Bern, Zürich, Luzern, Fribourg, Neuchatel, Lausanne, Montreux, Geneva, do have a night life AT LEAST in the city center/old town, just ask your receptionist/concierge.

Hi little ger,

day tours to italy, I think I remember bus tours going from Geneva, it´s a pity I didn´t know about your question earlier, I would have inquired there.

Basically you can create your own day trip if you are fairly close to the italian border. Your last day is in Zürich, so to reach Italy you will have to travel through the whole of Switzerland to get to Italy...

Otherwise your itinerary seems quite nice, although I always think these packaged tours put too much in one day... (Just to think of not going inside chillon castle, but only to take pics from outside seems soooo sad to me...)

Germangirl: Thanks for your kind assistance! Ur info is very accurate!

Hotel Waldstätterhof is indeed v.near the station but way out of my budget CHF180 (best price i could find) My budget is CHF120-130 (Per room per night for a double)

How about Drei Konige? Address is at
Bruchstr. 35, 6003 Luzern

Or do u have other recommended hotels near station in Luzern?

How about interlaken? Blushblush recommend Hotel Blume. It is at Interlaken west. Is it a good location? How about near Interlaken Ost? Got any recommendations?

I went to myswitzerland.com but i cant find a good and cheap hotel.

I'm sorry i trouble u alot :p

Thanks a million!
