Switzerland, and then?

My hubby will be on business trip to switzerland in May. So thought of joining him at the end of his business trip. However we have no idea where to go on from Switzerland.

Given that he will be spending a few days in switzerland, we are considering Italy or france.

For a first timer on F & E trip, would appreciate if any cotters can share their itinerary, my email is [email protected]

Would there be any language barrier? I heard to travel south i.e towards italy, people speak more english.

Hi Jo,

If language is a major concern, you should head north into Germany; more people speak English there. But I'd say just visit whatever country you've always dreamed of visiting. No need to cover too many places too.

Thanks raymond, that sounds like a good idea. To follow our heart.

We would prefer more scenic view, and i have read from one of your post quoting ...."I would personally recommend Switzerland for its scenary, and Provence (France) for its marvellous food, historical sights, and great weather".

So perhaps we would take that as a guide, cos we have never been to Europe before, and have had no clue which countries to proceed from switzerland.

Hi all,

Just to check that some cotters join tour 168 http://www.tour168.ch/04_promos/promos.htm. Are they link with chan's brother, cos when i click on the contact link, it showed chan brother's contact number.

Do you all actually book online, and join their local tour? It's not through Chan's brother right?

Hi Forex,

Yes, follow your heart, and your preferences.

I think Midas would recommend Tuscany (in Italy), it's a very nice place too though I haven't been there. But I've heard a lot about it and you might wish to consider that too. Consider also that traveling around these three countries is not so easy as you have to constantly go through the Alps, which are the highest mountains in Europe.

Do both of you plan to rent a car to drive around, or go by trains?

Hi Raymond,

we will travel by train since this is our first time, no confidence to drive around yet, hehe.

Think you are right, going around these 3 countries is not so easy. Perhaps we just narrowed down to Switzerland and France, and give Italy a miss this time round.

Is the swiss pass referring to the ticket for Metro?

Will it be ok to go to the tourist counter in Switzerland at the train station and take up those one day tour kind of stuff?

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for your reply. Really appreciate your help.

Will have to do some homework and then come up with the itinerary.

Then i will knock on your door again. AHAHa.

With thanks

Dear Forex,

If u are only going to Switzerland, no need to buy eurail but buy their swiss saver pass. It gives u unlimited train, bus, tram and boat ride all over switzerland except the trip to Jungfrau mountain. However, with swiss pass u will have discounted rates. If u are not confident in driving or first time in Europe, switzerland is the place to be. It is safe, clean and easy to navigate. Train goes to almost every town and very easy to use.

I went for a 9 days trip to Switzerland and after that bought a train ticket from Lausanne swizerland to Paris. Spend 5 days in Paris.

Hi Peng/Raymond,

I am planning to go on a F & E honeymoon to Paris and then train down to Switzerland and back to Paris again to catch a flight to somewhere else. I got about 10 days for both places. I am not planning to drive.

Where will you suggest I go to in Switzerland?

Hi Issac,

Can u arrive in Paris and depart from Zurich or Geneva instead? U save more time this way. Train from switzerland to Paris takes around 4 hour.

I think Lucern, Interlaken, Grindlewald, Vevey and Montreux are must go places. The last time i went, I base myself in Lucern and from Lucern, I take train to Zurich, Bern etc. Switzerland is small compare to other parts of europe. Suggest you buy a swiss pass for unlimited travel on train, bus, tram & boat ride.

Thanks Peng, River Chamonix looks gorgeous...

Good thing you suggest flying back from Zurich.. I realise Air Berlin got many flights to various places in Europe.. Thought their hub was only in Germany..

Btw could I ask where can I get KLM tickets out of Singapore to Europe on the cheap?

Hi Issac,

I usually buy tickets from my company corporate travel so as to enjoy the rates. sometimes I do check out travel agency, perhaps u can try Hong Tai travel for air ticket? I remember getting a good deal from them before.

hi peng,
read that you had a good experience travelling F&E to switzerland. i am planning to go in early july. will late august- early sep be a better time? please share your itinerary with me, kindly email [email protected]. i saw ur pixs and they are really beautiful..which time of the year did u? thanks a million!

Dear all,

Thank you for all the informations.

We managed to finalised on our destination. We are going for a 11 days trip, going to cover Switzerland, then Italy.

This is our flight schedules
Singapore/bangkok ------Bangkok/zurich

Returned flight
Rome/Zurich----Zurich/Bangkok----Bangkok/Singapore

Please give us some pointers.

1.We are most likely to spend 2 days in Zurich, and then go to Italy. I supposed accomodation is more expensive in switzerland? Or Should we explore other cities before going to Italy?

3. Is this the right route? I check from the map.
Venice to Florence then to Rome. We make Rome the last stop since we are flying from Rome back to singapore.

2. Is it better to travel by train or by flight from Zurich to Venice? The duration on train is 8 hours. Is this the right website to book the train to Venice?

Will try to do more research then post again. Thank you.

Hi forex,

I guess your main trip is to Italy right? for Switzerland You should try to visit other small towns to appreciate its beauty. 2 days is too short.

Hi Peng,

I am thinking of going F & E to Switzerland end of the year. I know it's a bit too early to plan now but just want to get some info first. I understand that you went 9 days there. Approximately how much will it cost in total for each pax? How long is the flight from S'pore to there? Will you mind sharing your itinerary with me? [email protected] Thanks.

In switzerland, actually there is nothing much, you can still visit these places too.

Chateau de Montreaux- abt 1hr+drive away from Geneva. Its a medieval liked castle by the lake.Romantic

Jungfrauch- Its in Zurich. Take a rail up the snow mountains, beautiful scenery from there, in winter, you can see frozen waterfall, experience outdoor at high altitudes when you get to the top of the mountain there. Its a ski resort too, i love the resorts which reminded me of ginger breadhouses.

( caution: it is a high pressure place, will feel dizzy, short of breath.)

From Switzerland, if you are driving, can go to France via the Mont Blanc Highway. It is cut through the Mont Blanc mountains and it surrounds you.

This is what I remembered most about my trip there. I dont know the route as my uncle was the driver, but the Mont Blanc Highway that links to France is worth going.

Hi,

Anyone please help to recommend B&B in Lauterbrunnen?

Hotel Rossli and Hotel Rugenpark are not available...

Many thanks!!

hi lee (lovelee),

You may want to check out Tripadvisor.com for hotel recommendations in Lauterbrunnen. You may wish to know that Hotel Rossli and Rugenpark are both in Interlaken and not Lauterbrunnen.

I have personally choose to stay in Grindelwald instead of Interlaken. 2 star hotel with breakfast costs abt 180CHF with a balcony that overlooks Eiger.

Dear all

I erroneously made a double booking for a hotel in Zermatt via www.booking.com. I made reservation for 2nd hotel and forgot to cancel the 1st reservation before the free cancellation deadline.

Therefore, I would like to let go of the hotel booking at a discounted price of CHF300.

The room is south facing and has a balcony. Price for the same room is CHF380 now at Booking.com

Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks!
