hello,

I intend to redo the bathrooms coz we really cannot stand the orange tiles

So i'll need to remove the vanity from my mbr & after we've re-tiled it...we can't use it anymore. So we'll need to get our own basin & tap.

Pauline,

I'm @ 151.

Been busy with choosing tiles & wardrobe stuff. Went to Alumix @ Toa payoh today to choose the layout & color with my ID. More or less confirm the basic stuff.

Piper,

I think u can only overlay ur tiles, you cant hack it off.

Hello Pauline,

I've been following the thread somewhat but have nothing to contribute since we aren't in the reno-phase yet. And also, after reading about the reno stuff, I don't think I quite understand or know what's going on. I guess until we do it, I won't know what's going on.

Would love to see pictures of your apts when it's done and meet up with y'all neighbours when we're home. but for now...

As for washing machines...my mom has used the top-loading one all my life and only now have I started using front-loading. The only reason why I would consider a front-loading washer next time is so that I can stack the washer and dryer up to save space. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with top-loading since it's easier to load and unload the machine, don't need to squat.

hi trekker,

I know cannot hack the tiles. We'll be overlaying the entire floor tiles. For shower area, we'll overlay the wall tiles as well but for the WC & basin area, we'll be cement screeding the walls....my ID say like tat is more cost efficient....coz overlay wall tiles very expensive!

hi everyone,

For the washing machine, I've seen F&P dryer mounted above the top loading washer. The dryer will be mounted upside down instead. I've asked some Best Denki salesman & he said this can be done. If the dryer is mounted upside down, we'll be provided with another sticker to label the buttons so that we can read the words.

I'm still deciding between F&P, electrolux or Brandt. Have any of u decided which one to get?

Mosaic_fish,
I'm actually using the long kitchen wall beside the bomb shelter to put the hob, cannot put hob against the wall facing the entrance of the kitchen. U get what I mean or is it our kitchen layout is a bit diff?
happy.gif

Piper,
I also dun quite like the orange tiles but find that HDB's workmanship quite good for the wall and floor tiles, so won't change for the time being. May be next time
happy.gif
I may get Fisher & Paykel washing machine.

Trekker,
is urs the walk-in wardrobe kind?
happy.gif

Pauline,
it will be nice to have one but up to individual. Some dun like as it takes the whole stretch of space. Some, like I too, like it as we can place our stuff on the vanity top
happy.gif
How much does ur ID quote u for a vanity top? Reasonable price?
happy.gif

DJ,
no worry, feel free to visit our homes and consult us when u r doing reno later
happy.gif

Tweetie,
so happy for u, moving into ur love nest soon!
happy.gif
I'm trying to confirm things with ID first before reno can start.

BBNN,
I'm sure BB123 is also very excited. That day when I went with hubby, happy and light mood all the way!
happy.gif

I'm going to Poh Choo Hardware Engineering Pte Ltd later during lunch time to take a look at the kitchen appliances. I'm seriously considering Teka hobs. Update u all later

Hi Daisy,

My ID didn't propose a vanity top in the 1st place, so I don't know what will be e cost like. Gonna ask him when I meet him on this Sat.
happy.gif

Hi Trekker,

Actually my ID suggested Alumix wardrobe for my M/bedroom too, but in the end, my bf & I decided to go for wooden type. Both of us prefer Zen type of furnishings.
happy.gif

I've seen some pics of Alumix wardrobe, they look nice!

I think I have ur email add right? I email u my hp no and u email me urs so when I'm going over and if u happen to be there, can show u
happy.gif

Trekker,
actually our master bedroom is quite long, so I squeeze in a walk in wardrobe, will not be fantastic lah but it's actually my hubby who would love to have one ke ke ke...
lol.gif
10ft is long and can put many stuff
happy.gif
Think ours also about 10 ft...

Pauline,
u can also ask him to quote the vanity top with a cabinet below. Not only u can store things in the cabinet, it can hide the pipe too

Pauline,

Actually you can still do Zen style. It depends what type of wood u use. There's the dark/light walnut door, very Zen looking. I'm going for more modern type, have tempered glass type & mirror.

Trekker,

U saw 1 alumix wardrobe which is very Zen looking? Hehe... Makes me hv 2nd thoughts abt it. Erm... Nevertheless, I'll just stick to my plan lah, chose the other type of wardrobe.

hello Daisy....

I din scrutinise HDB's workmenship tat day. But i remember seeing big gaps between the tiles. Also, the tiles used are the slippery kind...so it's gonna be quite dangerous when the tiles are wet.

Good Morn Everyone,

I will like to ask... do u all intend to change the bathroom doors? My contractor say the wooden door is nice.. shd keep but it is very bulky .. especially my MBR toliet.. the door nearly touch the toliet bowl.. find it very cramp..

Hi Mabel,

Which block/level is urs? We can update u into our list
happy.gif

I haven't started reno yet, so can't post u any reno pics. I heard corian table top for kitchen is good. Have u discussed with ur ID and gotten any quotation? He will let u choose the material for ur kitchen top. Diff material costs differently

Mosaic,

I'm changing to a glass door. If you find the door bulky, u may want to change to a bi-fold door. (Cost abt 200)

I have to agree that the layout of the bathroom is very odd, rather I hate it pretty much but cant do anything abt it. Was discussing with my ID to change the layout (changing the door place, hacking down walls) but signed the agreement that I cant touch the toilet tiles & stuff for the next 3 years.
sad.gif

Guess have to make do with it.

Trekker, u are right. I dun like the layout of my MBR toliet.. and the door location.. and the orange tiles.. need to endure for 3 yrs..

The bi-fold door save space.. but not so nice.. hehe..

Hi Mosaic_fish,

I agree that the wooden door is good, I don't intend to change it.
happy.gif
In fact, both my bf & I love it! Hee...

The doors of both my bathrooms are near the basin, that's why I'm still pondering if I should add in a vanity top. Even if I add a vanity top to my master bathroom, the area wouldn't be big enough for me to store things.

Hi mosaic_fish,

think everyone here has the same prob as u - toilet door nearly touching the toilet bowl!

I find it quite stupid actually.....when i want to close the toilet door, i need to stand in this awkward corner of the bathroom. also, we can only access the shower area after we've closed the bathroom door. Can't imagine if we are pregnant....how to squeeze into this tiny bathroom. Also the vanity basin is so near to the door. wat if ur hubby opens the toilet door without checking? it's an accident waiting to happen.

I've asked my ID to change the MBR toilet door to a sliding door for ease of mind & convenience. I dun wan to be the door stopper if i'm standing behind that bathroom door.

Hello Mabel,

I'll be using solid surface for my kitchen & table top. For the sink area, i'll be using stainless steel top.

I think solid surface is a popular choice coz it's seamless & easy to maintain. But do be careful with hot pots. Do not place hot pots directly on the solid surface...they'll become blur.

Finally got our keys to the flat.

I was very suprised that our flat is wired with data point too!!
I was thinking whether to lay data point for computer network but I guess HDB solve that for me.

Have not got really gone thru to check for defects.
Just roughly gone thru and found out HS door difficult to lock and one bedroom lock slighty faulty.

The shower taps seems to be of quite good quality also.

Overall, quite pleased with the flat except kenna evening sun.
Think must install solar film to block out the heat.

I think e layout for 4-rm & 5-rm bathrooms is different. Mine don't have the problems as what Piper has listed. I can roughly imagine what it looks like, seems like it is really bad. Although my bathrooms do not have much problems, my kitchen does! Worry that it's difficult to do my cooking & baking with such a limited space.

Hi all,

I happened to come across this story, thinking of sharing it with all of u here. Pls bear with it, I know the story is long. Do spend some time reading it.
happy.gif

Here the story goes:

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.

Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" -- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a bellyrub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together.

I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -- still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love."

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now so infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room.

A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dog speak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself -- a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.

And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

A Note from the Author: If "How Could You?" brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly "owned" pets who die each year in American & Canadian animal shelters.

Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a non-commercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice.

Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage all spay & neuter campaigns in order to prevent unwanted animals.

Mosaic_fish,
I will have sliding door for my master toilet. Mine is the same, the opened door will almost touch the toilet bowl. However, I will keep my common toilet wooden door.

Pauline,
thanks for the touching story. I've never had a dog but this story teaches a lot, thank u
happy.gif
Kitchen is really small, so we can't get too big a washing machine or fridge. If u need to buy a dryer, must be able to stack up the washing machine.

VeL,
long time no see!
happy.gif
Another alternative to shop for sinks & others will be at http://www.simsiangchoon.com.sg/
Heard that it gives better price than Hoe Kee.

BBNN,
I also saw the data point and my ID says very few HDB flat has this, we are one of the lucky ones. However, I don't quite understand when he said we could turn our house into an office, do u know what he meant and what u meant by data point for computer network? My house will also be affected by the evening sun, so we'll be putting blinds.

Piper,
do u find the doorway of the kitchen small? I feel like asking my ID to hack some part of the wall to make it bigger but ID says it's the normal size to place a door. I haven't asked him to design a kitchen door or sliding door yet. My mum and MIL has no door for their kitchen and I'm rather used to without door but also know the advantage of having a kitchen door. At least when I'm cooking, the oil and smell are confined to the kitchen area only. Haiz... now in a dilemma of whether wanna fix a door or not...

hi daisy,

i'll be having an open kitchen..so the door width is not an issue to me. another way will be to get a really powerful hood.

Hi All! I've collected my keys on Tues liao!!!! Thanks to those counting down & sending me all the well wishes!!! =D

Luckily i got u guyz in this forum with all the advice & tips.... still remembered that someone here mentioned that total nos. of keys is 24, hence when the HDB staff passed me 15, i was puzzled & asked about it ... then HDB realised that they didn't fix all the 3 door of my bedrooms, cos the previous owner opted for no-door before our walk-in selection application last yr & HDB din update the change.... hee... no wonder when i sneaked in my unit the other time, all the bedrooms were door-less ... still thot that the contractor had not fixed yet ... anyway they will be coming to fix for us the doors next Mon ..phew ......

I haven't opened my door yet, gonna do so this Sunday, 17 Jul! If any of u at ur new hse at ard 230 to 4pm, come drop by Blk 153 #13 at the unit next to the lift to mit up ya! U should be able to spot our unit, there'll be a crucifix above our main door!

Cheers & YEAHHHHHHHH.... it's TGIF (thank God it's Friday)tomolo!!!

Good morning everyone.

I had one question. If we do not submit the defects to HDB within a week, what will happen? Will they schedule very late to check for us or they may just ignore us thinking that we are satisfied with our house.

Does anyone had an idea on this?

piper

New Member
hi bb123,

i think u can still submit the defects list if it's within 1 yr. But dun submit after u've started ur reno....HDB may say tat it's ur contractor who did the damage.
