Ritz Carlton

Nothing really in particular, it's more of an attitude issue. She was nice, warm and friendly at first. But after which, she became less friendly and her replies became rather conscending. It's like a 'take-it-or-leave-it' kind of attitude and she made me feel stupid for even asking questions such as changing of dishes, changes in the number of tables required etc

I'm in the service industry myself and I defintely know that's not the way a service professional, especially one from a top-notch hotel behaves.

I've heard that top notch hotels sometimes give selective service. Meaning only the rich and famous are entitled to excellent service. I went to RC with an open mind and I was initially pleased when I didn't encounter that. Unfortunately, my worst fears appear to be coming true.

I've liased with Joey during the first meeting and subsequent emails followup. I would say she's definitely not condescending. Ritz prides itself on its 6-star service, that's what made me choose the hotel

Which is how the term 'selective service' comes in. Unfortunately, I fell into the category of 'can do without their business' category.

But luckily, I managed to change my coordinator and love my new coordinator to bits.

when is your AD anyway?

btw, have any of you ladies checked out the vendors for the wedding invites?

New coordinator is Charlotte.

Actually I don't quite like Ritz menu. The cheapest menu at $1000+ didn't come with sharkfin's or sliced abalone. The only dish that came closest to it was some soup with chunks of abalone.

I haven't tried Ritz's food yet but a lot of people have been telling me that their food is average. Even my photographer and bridal shop also told me the same thing. I guess they should know better as they're in the wedding business and must have attended tons of weddings or gotten lots of feedback from their clients. So I'm getting a bit edgy now..sigh...

Looking at other hotels in the same category such as Conrad, Fullerton, Fairmont where the menus are cheaper and yet comes with both of the most 'prized' ingredients, must definitely say these are good value for money. Unfortunately, they're booked on the date I want.

carebearz> i have a feeling the cheaper menus exclude the sharksfin so that couples will eventually upgrade the menu. that's what happened with us. we actually picked the individually platted dinner at 124++ per head, but eventually had to go even higher because the parents said sharks fin was non-negotiable.

i wouldn't worry too much if i were you though. the set-up of the ballroom is so breathtaking, they could serve me kway chap and i wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. but it really depends on your priorities i guess.

Initially I was torn between set-ups and food when I was choosing the hotels. But it appears that most Singaporeans remember only the food. I did a survey among my friends and most of them passed comments such as "food not bad/bad/good/horrible", "I like the sharkfins or dislike the chicken" or "service good/bad".

Seems that they aren't too bothered with the setup/deco. Their cooments on deco amounts very general comments such as "quite nice/grand/elegant". Ask them what the ballroom lights look like, they can only say dark or bright, hardly any of them can describe the chandeliers or ceilings. A lot of them don't even remember the main colours of the table setting.

Worse is when they had comments such as "oh this hotel ah, aiyah name only. The food is so lousy blah blah. Cannot see the sharkfin's, chicken overdone blah blah blah".

Haha..Guess should have expected it, being Singaporeans, food is always close to the heart.
They can give such vivid descriptions of the food right down to the spring onion beside the main dish but when it comes to deco/setup, they only have vague impressions.

I suppose that sort of help me to decide not to spend additional money on flowers/setup since most guests don't really remember anyway.

Arrghh...I hate being a perfectionist.

Carebearz> you have a point. but i think the best thing u can do is just to keep an open mind until the food tasting. at least you'll be able to give them feedback at that point.

i find that some people tend to be overly critical of food after weddings, and that these things tend to be very subjective. for example i have friends who are highly critical of shang's food, but others who say it's okay.

haha maybe it's the fact that i won't be getting to eat the food that makes me more apathetic about it. i mean it's the ritz, so they should have some quality control! i'm really not too worried.

Yikes! A Japanese guy was found dead in Ritz yesterday, on the 31st floor. Sounds like suicide to me. Sure hope it isn't a sign for more bad things to come...

Does anyone know know how long does it take for Ritz to get back to you with the draft contract once you've confirmed verbally that you will take their package?

Thanks.

RC got back to me within one week of verbal confirmation, and have been rather prompt in replying to my emails pertaining to menu changes etc.

Are there so few couples taking Ritz Carlton? Within the same class of hotels, St Regis is new so can be 'excused' for having few posts but even Fullerton has got so many posts.

Is it because many people deemed Ritz as too expensive or the food/service is too lousy? It's like so difficult to find info on Ritz.

Maybe those who took Ritz are not on this forum. Btw, I had my dinner at Ritz and almost all my guests commented it was one of the most special dinner they've ever attended. The setup and atmosphere were too glamourous beyond words for them, and most said the food was good and portion was satisfying such that when the final course came round, they were all full! I have totally NO regrets in taking Ritz. Let me know if you want to see the setup, i can share some pics

Hi
I opted for a black, gold, and maroon candlelight dinner theme - lots and lots of candles amidst dim lighting! It was like midsummer's night dream. Here's a pic:

Wow, nice work Ardenz!
It's the Chihuly room right, if I'm not wrong..I'm using that room too

Can I email you for your details as I would like to find out more from you. Thanks very much!

I think Ritz is really nice..As mine is a lunch event, so I'll be checking in at 8am. They said they cant guarantee the suite for me, but they can let me check in the deluxe room first then move to the Suite once it becomes available.

They also said they can offer me a deluxe room for a 1-2 hours for free to refresh and touch my my makeup should I wanna take my pre-wedding pictures in the hotel.

I think they're aren't too sticky about free perks as compared to the 1st time I met up with them. But certain things such as corkage charges waiver were still no go. But they were really nice to offer little extras.

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to hold a lunch at Ritz ballroom. I'm expecting about 35 tables. Has anyone attended or held a lunch at the ballroom before? Will it be too spacious and not cosy since the ballroom can actually hold 60 tables?

It will be great if someone can share some photos with me.

Thanks!

If you want cosy, go for Conrad. Conrad's ballroom is smaller and the overall lightings are orangey so feels cosy and warm.'
They're more value for money too, $1100++ can get you a 9course menu with sharkfins' and abalone. But they're really strick on free perks.
They wanted to charge me an additional $1500 for doing the solemnasation at the poolside.

Ritz's ballroom is ok with 35 tables, I didn't find the ballroom that big. I had my graduation at Ritz and can't imagine it fitting in 60tables.

Alternatively, consider St Regis? Surprisingly, St Regis was cheaper than Ritz. For $1200++ per table, you can get sharkfin's but it's 6 course though. Comes with 2 free nights in a suite as well.

You need to get the $1500 menu for Ritz if you want sharkfin's.

jenelle > i saw a 60-table setup at the Ritz when I was doing the recce for my wedding.IMO 60 tables was about right, with enough space between each table. tables weren't packed right to the edge either. the ritz ballroom has a max capacity of 90 tables. i have a feeling 35 tables might look pretty sparse. agree with carebearz that conrad might be a better option because they accommodate 32 tables of 12.

Hi Carebearz
Sure, feel free to PM/email me! CAn share the details with you!

enivi28: I used CC Lee (Mr Lee) for the decor and Dreamweavers (Jerine) for my cards. Was very pleased with both! I actually visited the other vendors on Ritz's list but their service wasnt' that fantastic I felt.

Hi Ardenz
I am also holding my banquet at Ritz. Did you have to topup for your decor? I have met up with woodsville florist but their are not very friendly. Whats ur experience with CC Lee?

ardenz

hi candorian
I didnt top up anything for the decor. We just creatively played around with what was given and according to the theme.
CC Lee's very professional - he knows his stuff, having been in the business for so long i think, he can be direct at times and criticize some of your chosen floral combi but it's all for the better I feel as he gives opinion from a professional perspective.

We didnt choose Woodsville because they didnt offer some of the stuff that CC Lee had e.g certain candle stands etc. and also the liason person didnt seem too experienced or too concerned about what we wanted and instead kept pushing for us to upgrade which may come across as too money-minded at times!

Ardenz> Thanks for the advice. i felt the same way with woodsville, the flowers they provided was very simple and basic and the lady was always stressing on topup for better flowers.

I will make n appointment with CC Lee soon. Btw which card providers did u use? Dreamweavers or American wedding treasures?

carebearz

New Member
Just visited CC Lee and he sounds expensive. He said that the standard package is 8 main flowers with feelers for 1 table setting. Anything more than that, will have to top up. He estimates top-up is between $2-5k for the Chihuly room for more elaborate settings.

My wedding lunch will also be held in RC for 35 tables with a dessert buffet (similiar to Michelle Chia Wedding).IMO, I think CC Lee set up is fantastic though it maybe on a high side. My GF have spoken to him abt the theme and he recommend pastel colours for lunch to match the colours in the grand ballroom.
My ROM will also be done in the hotel to save the hassle to run ard.

Hi

can any brides suggest to me when is the ideal time to go down to the florist and card provider? I have just made my 2nd deposit for my Nov solemnisation lunch? Is it too early to do it in June?

TIA

carebearz

My wedding is in early Dec and I've already visited all the vendors. haha. All of them did said that I was early haha.

But I prefer to settle some stuff early as towards the end, usually more concerned with guest lists etc. I don't want to spend the last 2 months running around and spending all my free time on wedding stuff. So I started all the visiting and sourcing early

carebearz so u settle the flowers deco and invitation cards already? so what's the feedback on all the vendors? When can u collect the invitation cards?

Btw I am holding my solemnization at the chihuly room with one room for the theatre seating and buffet lunch at the next room for 6 tables. I am wondering if i need to top up xtra for the floral deco at the theatre-seating?

Same here, enivi28. I'm using the Chihuly room too but my ROM will be in the suite, I think..Coz I think my ROM will be a small one with closed ones in the morning, then tea-serving, then head down to lunch.

I haven't really decided on the ROM part..was thinking of doing poolside also but am worried about the weather. And also don't know if Ritz charges extra for it.

Your package includes stand flower stands for the aisle, reception table and flowers for every table right? I think it will be the same as mine.

I'm thinking of bringing in my own florist and the coordinator told me they can deduct a certain amount from my package as the package cost includes the flowers.
So I visited a few florists and boy..the price range is so wide. Branded ones like Boegna, Simply Flowers charge from $3000 to $10,000 for just table flowers. Their stuff are often ala-carte, meaning the reception table, dining tables, solemnization table/chairs all charged separately.

Whereas Far East Flora quoted me around $1500 for 10tables, reception table, aisle flowers, solemnization deco. Cheap right?

I think go directly to the wholesaler will be a lot cheaper. If you go through vendors such as Boegna, Simply Flowers, they charge more as they still need to buy the flowers from someone unless they own the wholesale business themselves.

After talking to the Ritz's appointed vendors, I narrowed it down to CC Lee over Woodsville as he seems more classy. But he's not the type who will cater to your demands if he thinks your ideas are lousy. He said he doesn't like to do kiddy themes as he believes wedding should be classly. So no ballons, no cute cute stuff..
If you're doing it like a church wedding, maybe put a ribbon to link the chairs together, don't need to top up. But if you want flowers, then will need to. CC Lee said typically top up is $2k-$5k for Chihuly room but he's quoting it as a topup for the entire room, not just the solemnisation deco.

Woodsville, it was difficult getting hold of them and I read some really bad reviews about them online, like being late for weddings etc. So that put them right out of my list.

For cards, Dreamweavers had a rather selected range but service was great.
I haven't gotten my cards yet, just chose my designs and I think may start printing only in September.

BTW, I take back everything I said about Joey.

CareBearz,

the top-up of 2k-5k seems quite ex to me.
My package includes 6 flower stands for the aisle (Not sure if it is only for the room where I have the tables or include the march-in room as well?), reception table and flowers for every table.

Btw are you taking both the function rooms? How many tables will u have? buffet?

carebearz

New Member
enivi28,

Yupz, I'm taking both function rooms. I'll probably end up with 8-12 tables, still trying to work out my guest list. As I have too many tables, I won't be able to use Chihuly room for my ROM so thinking of holding the ROM in the suite.

I think for your case, the 6 flower stands will be for the ROM side, where you'll do the march-in.
But you can request to have them place anywhere you want.

For me, I'm only inviting relatives and a few close friends to the ROM in the morning. After that we'll serve tea. I estimate it will take about an hour, then we'll go down to the dining room and wait for other guests such as colleagues and friends to arrive for the lunch. So for me, if I need to move the flowers from the ROM suite (or wherever I decide to hold it), its gonna be complicated. But I suppose relatives wouldn't mind so much about seeing 'moving flowers'. Haha.

But for your case, as the rooms are side by side and if your guests for the ROM are also the same guests for the banquet, I think Joey and CC Lee wouldn't recommend you moving the flower stands from the ROM room to the dining room.
Coz I did asked them before and they said it will not look nice in front of the guests to be moving stuff.

I'm not having the buffet, will be doing a sit-down set. Mine will be a lunch event. But my parents want the dinner menu as they said it looks more presentable. Lunch menu is only 6 courses while dinner is 8 courses with more 'expensive' stuff. I think we're sort of prepared to make losses as we offering dinner menu during lunch. But oh well, once in a lifetime...

But I'm thinking of doing 5 courses with dessert buffet. Still working out the menu, I must have driven Joey crazy by asking her to email me the quotation everytime I come out with some menu changes.

You can check out the following blog:-

You can also email Felicia, I did and she was really helpful.

Attended the St Regis wedding show yesterday. And whoa, they're offering a lot of perks. They even have free food tasting even if you're just doing 7 tables. And they've real wedding cake for cutting and to distribute to guests, 2 bottles of wine per table, corkage charge waiver for all alcohol, 2 nights stay, spa treatment after the wedding, use of Bentley for 8 hours (for 30tables and abv) etc etc.

Their set menu is slightly higher than Ritz, but if you factor in all the extras, St Regis is actually cheaper.

And they're even offering a buffet menu now which when I asked earlier this year, they didn't even have it!

A photogpraher was telling me that the demand is still there for Ritz, so maybe they're not as generous.

Need some advice here..

I recently attended the St Regis Wedding show and they were offering:-
2 free nights stay in a suite
spa treatment
day room for helpers
real wedding cake
2 bottles of wine per table
1 bottle of champagne
waiver of all alcohol even though mine is a small wedding.

We tried to negotiate with Ritz but they refused to budge. Now thinking of switching to St Regis but will lose the deposit at Ritz.

St Regis menu cost a couple of dollars more than Ritz but for the food they're offering, it's pretty good value. They've got abalone, sharkfins' etc. Furthermore, if you add in all the additional perks, they work out to be cheaper than Ritz as I've to pay for the wine, cakes etc.

Do you guys think I should give up the deposit at Ritz?

Thanks.
