hi littleger,

19 days is really nice for exploring south island, wont be rushing. I planned my itinerary by places 1st, booked car rental duration, then concentrated on booking accommodation through online (can get guide book from Ngee Ann city) or wat is ur budge for accommodation? Since Dec is a peak period, u might want to book all accommodations beforehand.

As for activities, u can book in NZ, need not book beforehand.

littleger,

u can visit Milford sound, deer park height n lots of adventure rides at queenstown, blue or yellow eyes penguin at Oamaru, Mt john tracking at lake tekapo, hooker valley walk at Mt cook, join glacier walk either at fox glacier or frenz josef and many more.

As for accommodation, u can refer to this link.
i stay at these places. Its advisable to book all accommodations as u wil be going during peak http://www.singaporebrides.com/forumboard/messages/4/258152.html?1109911817 period in dec.

as for tickets, now NZ website got promotion i think so. u can get it at promo price. check it out.

Hi all

Just deciding between going to either Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier. Any comments? Which has more scenary and activities?

New Member
jessp,

franz josef is smaller, more developed and more touristy. which means if you are doing the guided walks, franz josef has more defined tracks (ie easier) and the ice is also cleaner.

fox is bigger than franz josef, more isolated, more rural which "off the beaten track" kind of people will prefer.

Dear All

I am going to NZ South Island in Oct 05 for 10 days, and have tentatively done up a schedule as follows. Appreciate if you can advise if my schedule will be achievable, not too rushed, comfortable etc... thanks in advance to all the frenly folks here!!

Day 1 - Fly from SIN to Christchurch
Day 2 - Christchurch (overnite)
Day 3 - Christchurch - Lake Tekapo - Mt Cook (overnite)
Day 4 - Mt Cook - Queenstown (overnite)
Day 5 - Queenstown - Drive to Te Anau then take coach to Milford Sound for the cruise, then drive back to Queenstown (overnite)
Day 6 - Queenstown - Wanaka (overnite)
Day 7 - Wanaka - Fox Glacier
Day 8 - Fox Glacier - Franz Josef Glacier - Hokitika/Greymouth (overnite at either place)
Day 9 - Hokitika/Greymouth - Arthurs Pass - Christchurch
Day 10 - Depart Christchurch for SIN

Need your advise here. For Day 3, is it better to stay overnite at Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook? I heard Mount Cook at nite will not have much to do, so thinking of staying overnite at Tekapo. But if I do so, will it make Day 4 very tiring, meaning from Tekapo - Mount Cook - Queenstown, as I am still planning to go for the walks at Mount Cook?

Also, for Day 8, I am unsure which is a better place to stay overnite, either Greymouth or Hokitika. Anyone with comments or advise please?

Thanks!

Hi littleger

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, i agree. So will just skip Milford Sound from my itinerary and spend 1 more day at Queenstown ;p

BTW, where did you get your estimated distance? Your timing all seem very optimistic, vs the timing table which I got from Teddy (yes i booked with him too!)

For example, from Wanaka to Fox Glacier, mine is estimted at 6 hrs, vs yours of 3hr 45 min! hehe

So do you know what are the attractions at Hokitika?

Hi Littleger,

Was very busy for the past few days.

Day 2 - I suspose u go by Scenic Route 72 from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo right? hv u thought of staying a nite at Lake Tekapo? Beautiful lake. Probably on Day 2 morning, u can go to Lyttelon Port, Governors Bay (since very near CHC town)instead on Day 15? then at nite at lake tekapo.. Just a suggestion only. its up to you.

Day 4 - I find this Southern scenic road is quite boring, nothing much to see. Its good that u cut across via Lumsdem to Te Anua. Alot of unsealed roads if u are gg to Nugget Point, Pls. drive carefully, esp at nugget point, its unsealed uphill road.

Day 5 - Te Anau supermarket really cheap. I bought all my chocolates as sovernirs from there. Cheapest among all the towns.

Day 6 & Day 7 - At Queenstowns, u can drive up to Deer Park Heights, highly recommended as u can self feed the animals and some part of LOTR movie are filmed there.

Day 8 - From Queenstown to Fox Glacier, Pls. bear in mind this is going to be a long drive. We left Wanaka at 10am, went to Puzzling world and etc. Then drove via Hasst to Fox Glacier, really long. I dun think u can hv the time to walk the Lake Matherson. Its better to go Lake Matherson in the morning where the lake is calm, still n beautiful for phototaking.

Day 9 - Hokitika is a nice, small quiet town and i personally love this town. Can stroll along the beach after dinner.

Day 15 - Lyttelton Harbour and Governors Bay really breathtaking. Pls. carefully while driving up there as the roads are very steep going uphill kind.

Glad that u booked with Teddy. Did u quote me? hehe so managed to get any discount?

Hi Jovialger,

Basically 10 days in south island is abit rush but as long u plan your itinerary well, it will be okie.

Day 3 - Since ur itinerary is quite tight. I dun think u can overnite at Lake Tekapo. Its better to stay either in Mt cook or Twizel. If drive from lake tekapo to Queenstown, its too rushing.

Day 4 - U can do the Hooker Valley Walk (4hrs return at Mt Cook, then drive to Queenstown (overnite)

Day 5 - From Queenstown to Milford sound at least need 3/4 of ur day n thus u might be missing out exploring Queenstown. There are alot of things u can do in Queenstown like doing the Gondola rides, shotover jet rides n etc, go to Deer Park Height, walter peak cruise n etc.

Day 6 - Queenstown - Wanaka. Basically there is nothing much at Wanaka except Puzzling world. Hmm suggestion u no need to spend over nite at wanaka. Or u might want to stay 1 more nite on Day 6 at Queenstown so that u can go to Milford sound.

Day 7 - Suggest Queenstown - Wanaka - Fox Glacier

Day 8 - Greymouth is a big busy town and there are alot of shops thus u can do some shopping. Hokitika is more towards quiet n smaller town. More peaceful. I stayed at Bluespur lodge at Hokitika and i love the lodge. very peaceful. There is nothing much attractions at Hokitita, just that there is this FREE glowworm dell. Its very dark n we dare not go in. too scary liao.

That's all for my suggestions. Its up to your decision still.

Hi Kite

Thanks for your suggestions!

For Day 6, my main activities will still be at Queenstown, thinking of going to Deer Park Heights too, and only drive to Wanaka in late afternoon (so that the next day (day 7) journey to Fox Glacier won't be so long). Also heard Lake Wanaka very nice too! Did you visit Wanaka?

Heard there is this Cinema Paridiso at Wanaka. Worth going you think?

Day 8 - Hmm.. ok. sounds like Greymouth nicer place to stay, at least can do some shopping and maybe drop by to visit Pancake Rocks. So maybe I can just drop by Hokitika, see some of its attractions, before heading off to Greymouth.

Did you drive up to see Pancake Rocks that time? How far away is it from Greymouth, and is it worth the trip up and down, before I drop off from Greymouth back to CHC via Arthurs Pass?

By the way, need everyone's URGENT advice here. For CHC accomodation, I can either choose a hostel that is very near Cathedral Square (but no offstreet parking), or choose a more expensive motel further away (but with offstreet parking).

If I choose the hostel, can i inquire if it will be VERY difficult to find free public parking space around the Cathedral Square region? Will it be safe to park the car there overnight? I will be requiring the space on Saturday afternoons (from 1 pm onwards) all the way till Sun morning before I drive to CHC airport. ....

Hi Jovialger,

Day 6 - Thats fine since u wil be staying at Queenstown til late noon. U driving from Queenstown to Wanaka via arrowtown or Crown range? We went by crown range and the roads are real challenging. Alot of steep bends without barrier, hv to drive very very carefully as this is a mountain route. Not easy. So i suggest if u gg to Wanaka in late afternoon, pls driving before sunset. Do not drive at nite, very dangerous. Yes i visited lake wanaka n puzzling world and that morning was real real cold, freezing in e middle of Jan. The lake was not calm cos too windy liao.

Day 8 - Yup its good to stay at Greymouth since alot of shops n restuarants there.

Yes we drove up to Pancake rocks too n i find it rather quite boring n that day was real HOT n warm. maybe its e weather. I find not very worth the trip to visit Pancake rocks plus if u want to see blowhole, u hv to depend on timing n check w info counter.

I suggest u might want to detour to go Hanmer spring via Lewis Pass for a hot spring and relax before driving back to Christchurch and skip Arthur pass totally. Anyway, the decision is still yours.
happy.gif

I stayed at Achillies Motel n hv our free own parking lot. Hmm not so sure on about public parking.

Anyway we got 2 fines during our trip there. 1 ticketing was at Christchurch while we went to hv our breakfast, got a NZ$12 fine. We paid Teddy n he paid for our behalf.

Another fine was mailed to my home NZ$80 3 months later. drove at 63km/h though limit is 50km/h. The speed camera caught us at Oamaru while driving down to Dunedin. So pls. stick to the speed limits strictly.

Hi Kite

Thanks for your comments. I checked out Achilles Motel too, but from the map, seems like it's a long walk to Cathedral Square. May I check with you how long is the walk to the City Square from Achilles Motel? How do you find the motel? Comfortable and value for money?

Hi littleger

Tuscana a bit out of our budget ;p

Hi Kite

Hmm... how would you suggest I add in a trip to Hanmer Springs?

From Day 9, I have to leave from Hokitika/Greymouth but has to reach CHC that evening, as my flight will be early next morning.

Can a trip up from Greymouth - Hanmer Springs - CHC be done?

hi chel,
yes, i was the one in the switzerland thread.. I changed my mind cos the land tours organised by trafalgar, contiki, etc.. only covers lucerne in switzerland... other parts of switzerland such as interlaken is not covered...
my intention of going to europe is to visit many places in switzerland and italy.. i guess it is winter and too cold to tour switzerland...
I will be going europe in autumn next year.. which will be in sep/oct... frens told me that europe will be beautiful..

i also contemplating whether to visit glowworm dell ... i think it is going to be rather scary cos you need to pass a cemetery before you reach the place...

Hi Jovialger,

From Achilles to CHC town, its like 15mins walk. we didnt drive instead we walked. We find the motel very big and value for $, got a kitchen, big living room, bedroom and bathroom. But the motel is alittle old, not very new.

Oh in this case, since u wil be leaving NZ for Spore early morning on Day 10. I wont not suggest to add Hanmer springs then else it wont be too rush driving from greymouth - hanmer spring - christchurch abt 5hours. thought at first and suggest u might want to overnite at hanmer spring (like wat i did) and then next day, drive from hanmer spring to CHC. Think your itinerary too rush, hmm shall skip hanmer spring, final shall be from greymouth - arthur pass - chc (3hrs).

Hi Littleger,

actually if i remember fox glacier/franz josef also got glowworm dell but must pay $ like $2?? cos got guide one. hokitika is FOC but we dare not go in cos too dark n scary.
