Yet to go, will be travelling in Dec! Midst of planning (started since 6mths ago)
Wanted to rent a campervan. But compared the pricing, it is more ex than renting a car and sleeps in a cheap motel. Also cannot anyhow park the campervan.
Only designated locations and these places usually have lodging also, just common toilet.

Actually planning a significant visit to New Zealand is complicated, no doubt about it. There are SO many choices to make about when, where, and how long to visit because New Zealand has such an astounding variety of natural, cultural, and adrenalized activities to choose from. Nowhere else in the world will you find such a variety of must-see natural features clustered into such a small land area so it's better get guidence from an experienced travel guide

New Zealand is really beautiful! But you will really need to be able to drive around, unless u r planning to stay in one city (most of the tours will pick you up from the hotel). There r buses to diff towns, but not much within the city or to outskirts.
About campervans, though they look really cool, I heard from a friend staying there that they r not nice to drive (something dragging at the back).
To me, the ultimate highlight was kayaking in the Abel Tasman national park where a baby seal swam right under my kayak! Loved all my wildlife experiences there.

Hi, I had only done South Island for a 12 days trip few years back.
Spent days in planning the clockwise route and while we got there, my hubby decided to go anti-clockwise at the car rental place instead. Therefore I say, don't plan too much... There are lots to discover at any point of the trip which changes your initial thoughts.
Rent a car and get a motel is better. You had a long day driving and would want to sleep on comfortable beds.
We booked our first 2 nights stay while in SG, and booked the rest at I-site along the way. At some point we decided we could stay for another night and we called to make changes and booked another motel. Pick up the thick motels guide book at the airport.
i love Milford sound, the two glaciers and lake Tekapo.

NZ would make a very nice relaxing honeymoon trip. Driving is less stressful than sg.
1-way, and mostly law abiding. Lots of traffic police along the way during hols season. I have been using maps.me for all my trips. Self-drive and backpacking. They are pretty accurate so far.
Lodging may be harder to get for some places during hols season, so I booked in advance, and mark them in the apps.
Google map driving distance is the optimum(drive at max speed limit), you should cater more time for each long distance.
I spent 18 days for both islands.
PS. I'm not in any relations to that app.

North Island - Auckland, Hamilton (Hobbiton), Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Wellington in that order. Lots to see in between.
