dear folks...i am in a mix mood whether i should get LCD or plasma. Alot of people told me tat LCD is better, as plasma have the high risk of dead pixel and is kind of un-repairable.
Any advise on this? 32 LCD cost abt 2799, and 42 inch LG plasma cost abt 2900. So i dunno if to pay more for a bigger screen or not........

depends on what you use it for, for computer use, LCD better, for watching DVD and TV programs, plasma... viewing angle not that sharp, not hurting to the eyes, and motion pictures are sharper than LCD

i personally feel LCD is very harsh to the eyes if you look at it for long... just like when you look into the computer for too long...

Although LG has the biggest Plasma panel production in the world, the best Plasma doesnt come from LG. Its Pioneer.

The model Tinkle quoted above is an VGA quality, which is not supposing to be the true Plasma quality. In this case, my opinion is get a LCD.

The LCD for TV and computer is different i think...

LCD use backlight whereas plasma uses ionising of gas...this means that there will be burn-mark...

e.g. there will be CNA logo should u only watch CNA channel continously ONLY... ;p

My FH and I went to Best at IMM, the salesman there recommend Plasma to us, saying that the respond speed for Plasma is better than LCD. Then we went to Best at PS, the salesman there recommend LCD, saying that Plasma got reflection, not good for viewing.

So which is actually better?

How about those "unknown" brands in the market, like BenQ, TCL, Ichiban or Pal***? Are they durable/reliable? Anyone tried those? Prices of these brands are quite a far range from those branded ones (Sharp/Hitachi etc).

i'm more inclined towards LCD. cos for plasma, there's the problem of burn marks in the long term. and i heard from some ppl dat they're slowly phasing out plasma.

and i hv many frens advising me not to go for samsung. sharp or sony shld be quite safe.

it need high-tech component to make a LCD panel become LCD TV..... panel can be the same but the output may not be the same.........

I've just bot a Hitachi 42PD8900TA from Best Denki although my initial plan was the get the Samsung LA40R71B. We played the same DVD on both tv & indeed a plasma is clearer when it comes to bigger screen. Fast moving image on a LCD gets distorted. According to the sales person, a LCD tv wld be good for screen 37" & below becos of the slower response rate compared to plasma. This Hitachi 42PD8900TA is wholly made in Japan & with HD 1,024 x 1,080 Pixels ALIS Plasma Panel. Thats y nowadays plasma comes in bigger & bigger screen, becos a LCD would not be able to give quality above 37". However, Hitachi appears less stylish than the Samsung LCD.

LCD uses Liquid Crystals. Dead pixels happen when such Liquid Crystals 'spoil' and loses the effect of refraction of colour.

Plasms uses gas. When you compare gas to liquid crystals, gas has a higher refresh rate than liquid crystals. When you have a slower refresh rate, you get the 'ghost image'

In general, plasma by right is better than LCD, but it is expensive in terms of the electricity consumed. LCD consume less electricity

But the point to note is that the trend is moving in LCD and the LCD nowadays are getting better and better.

Though personally, I prefer plasma, if given a choice, I wld buy LCD and move in the trend of the flat panel displays. It is safer that way.

When you try out the displays at the shop, if possible, try to requests the sales man to show a tv show or some image with real characters instead of cartoons.

personally, i prefer LCD to plasma. but lcd tvs shouldn't go beyond 37", otherwise effect wouldn't be good.

i jus bought 1 set of 32" SHARP LC-32BX5M & 1 set of 37" SHARP LC-37BX5M for my new lovenest. these are the latest model from SHARP. the design look sleek and class. the only model that has 2 HDMI inputs currently. response time is good and the resolution is good too.

i bought the tvs after much consideration & research. in the end i chose SHARP cos i feel their lcd tvs are good in terms of specs, colour, clarity & resolution.

well, CRT TV is indeed the lowest price among all and also cheapest to maintain. makes sense to buy one now before they become obsolete. maybe years down the road, it may be a collectors' item...and u can auction if off at 10 times the original value. hehehehehe....

i prefer LCD.. n i think LCd is more Popular, is cheap as well.. anyway try going to Audio House, they having trade in promotion for LCD tvs.. trade in a 14 inch tv get $300 of 32 inch LCD Tv, trade in 29 inch Tv get $400 off 37 inch LCD tv.. anyway old Tv might be sold off to kafang guni at low price, might as well trade in, better price.

S.C> i think Plasma and LCD are of the same cost now.. from the price I was shown... even slightly cheaper than LCD... was told that plama uses a higher and better technology than LCDs... but seems like Plasma will cause burn marks also..????

I would never take an LCD if a plasma was an option. Your budget should get you something like a 37" 37PWD8 or 42" 42PWD8 Panasonic screen, which despite being SD panels will still give the overall better picture with far more realistic contrast ratios and black levels that LCD can only dream of. Once an LCD is out of the high brightness shop floor and into a normally lit living room only then can you actually see where the LCD doesn't have any black levels to show, nor any detail within. LCD does obviously have the higher resolution, but we've got to put it into context. A 32" screen with 1280x768 pixels viewed from 10ft away is not gonna look any sharper than a 37" screen with 852x480 pixels. Conversely, if there is any black (or indeed variable whites) detail to be seen, even though the LCD had the more pixels it doesn't have the colour range to show the details correctly (or at all) where the plasma does. Finally, a plasma will be bigger.

My opinion is that a good plasma will most times beat an LCD for PQ. Trouble is there are so many plasmas out there with such hugely varying prices that it's hard to pin them down. I have seen both the Sony screens and I felt the LCD was better by some way, although I did not get a chance to fiddle with the settings (another problem when comparing).

For me, the lightness, low energy use, cool running and lack of any burn problems swing it for LCD. Probably 80% of people will tell you to buy plasma but you must decide for yourself.

I just can't get my head around the stream of posts on here talking about screen burn worries and how you can avoid it. Myth or not, I don't want to be wondering if I need to turn the PC off yet in case I get a permanent taskbar on the screen!
