hi zenn,

i went to krabi last year just before tsunami hit the area. La Playa is situated right on top of a mountain. unless u get the better rooms, u r unable to view the sea at all. U have to walk all the way (roughly 10mins) to get to the beach. As for Ao Nang, it's just rite infront of the beach.

La Playa is not situated at the top of a mountain (it's not even a mountain)..it's at the base. The one further up the hill is Pavillion Queen's Bay.

Hi zenn

Yes it's true. Ao Nang is not a nice beach..in fact the water can be quite murky. I didn't see people tan there...maybe some, but not many. It's not like Patong beach at all. And when the tide is hide, the entire beach is covered by the sea waters! You'll need to venture to the islands or Railay beach if you want nice sand n waters. It's fairly cheap to hire a long tail boat to get you to your desired destination.

Ao Nang beach itself is quite a short stretch. Along the beach, there are hotels (big and small), cafes, restaurants, tour agencies, hair/nail/massage parlours, dive shops, souvenir stands. Take a look at this map:

Ao Nang Villa should be located somewhere in front of the marker 'Police Centre'. It's at the beach front. Ao Nang beach is quite short..it's the sandy colour part on the map between Ao Nang Travel & Tour Co and where Ao Nang Villa should be. La Playa is located right by the marker 'Tourist Police'. I hope I remembered all my positions correctly. Hope this gives you a better idea

Hi Alhana,

Would you suggest to join the 4 Island tour or get long tail boat on our own? If on our own which island is better? Do you recall roughly how much?

Sorry for so many questions ya.

Many thanks!

4-island is quite fun, although each stop is relatively short. You get to see more, and it includes snorkelling gear, which is useful if you don't hv your own. 4-island includes Railay beach, snorkelling near Chicken island (they just stop the boat in the middle of the sea and you jump in - saw lotsa fish and sea urchins, and the boat operators threw bread into the water so that the fish wld swim ard us), Tub island (it's made up of 3 islands that are linked by a sand bar which is exposed during low tide) and Poda Island. You can see Poda Island from Ao Nang..and if you wanna pick one island only, that's probably the best. The beach is long...nice white sand..and there's an area for you to snorkel. I think the long tail rental is around B200 for Poda. Hubby and I went on a 4-island tour, and another day we went kayaking in the mangrove. That was fun too, but guarantees aching shoulders :p

Hi Alhana,

You been really great help! Err when you say short stay at each island do you mean 1-2 hrs each? Beside snorkelling near chicken island, what do we do at each island?

Also, if we choose to go one island, would it b bored to stay there whole day? Pandan me cos I nv been to island hopping b4 :p

Btw Railay beach is at Poda island? Aiyo so confused by all the beaches and islands -_-

Hi zenn

The islands are mostly uninhabited..so there's no accomodation, no vendors, no nothing. If you choose to go to just one island, I suggest you bring a good book, towels, lotsa sunscreen, food and water and snorkelling gear (they sell them at Ao Nang beach). Of coz if you take the island tours, food & drinks are provided, as well as the snorkelling gear. Sunscreen is a must..you can easily get a sunburn out there, even when you're in the water. For the tour, I think we stopped at each spot for around 1/2 hour to an hour. Yes, staying on one island for the whole day can be boring. We did that when we were in Phuket...a full day trip to just 1 island. I was so bored, and was getting roasted..was wishing we cld go back but the boat wld only bring us back at a fixed time. However, if it's not a tour (ie you don't need to adhere to their schedule), I think you can just arrg with the long tail boat driver on when you want to go back. Since you've nvr been island hopping before, perhaps it's best you do the 4-island one to get a taste of it..then if you like, hire a long tail and go out on your own the next day.

Railay beach is on the mainland, but you need to take a boat to reach there. There's no road access from Ao Nang coz it's blocked off by a limestone cliff. It's a favourite place for rock climbing enthusiasts. Poda is an island that's visible from Ao Nang beach. At Ao Nang beach, you will see the long tail boat rates..they'll advertise how much you need to pay for each destination.

For a better idea of islands, beaches etc...google Krabi destination guides...I used to bookmark some good ones, but I've seen deleted them from my faves..else I cld send you a few links for reference. But it should be easy for you to find the info on the net.
