Seven dead in Thailand floods, resort island Koh Samui hard hit
BANGKOK, Thailand : At least seven people have died in flooding in Thailand, while hotels and restaurants on the resort island of Koh Samui remain shuttered, causing millions of dollars in losses, officials said on Sunday.
An estimated 50,000 people have been affected by torrential rains that lashed nine southern Thai provinces that have so far caused 40 million baht (US$975,000) in damage, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said.
But department officials said total losses could be much higher after the damage on Koh Samui is tallied.
Flights to and from the inundated island had resumed and roads had reopened, but an unknown number of tourists remain stuck in their hotels, officials said.
Hundreds of shops and restaurants along Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui's social hub, are still closed after several days of heavy rains brought torrents of water and mudslides, tourism officials said.
Losses to the island are estimated at around one billion baht (about US$24 million), a tourism industry official was quoted as saying by a local newspaper on Sunday.
At least 500 residents have been evacuated from coastal areas due to the flooding, an official at Koh Samui's Amphoe district told AFP, adding that the rain had now stopped.
"Assistance for affected villagers and tourists could be done much better after the rain has stopped and transportation has resumed conveniently around the island," he said. - AFP/de
