Has anyone chosen to buy a resale flat under the Joint Singles Scheme instead of the Fiancé/Fiancée Scheme?
Scenario:
- Both M and F are above 35 years old, currently living with their respective families but planning to get married sometime in the future (date TBD).
- Both earn at least $5K each and are first-time buyers
- Both are Singaporean citizens and happen to live in the same neighborhood, intending to buy a resale flat in the area
Comparison of HDB Grants
For the Joint Singles Scheme, each person gets a $40K Singles Grant, and a $10K Proximity Housing Grant (PHG) for staying near their family. This totals $100K combined.
For the Fiancé/Fiancée Scheme, the couple qualifies for an $80K Family Grant and a $20K PHG, also adding up to $100K.
Since the grants are identical, wouldn't it make sense to apply under the Joint Singles Scheme first?
Key Consideration: Timeline & Flexibility
- Under the Fiancé/Fiancée Scheme, we must submit a marriage certificate within 3 months of key collection. While extensions are possible, they are not guaranteed.
- With the Joint Singles Scheme, there is no deadline for marriage, giving us the flexibility to settle housing first and handle ROM later at our own pace.
Is this a viable approach?
- Are there any downsides to this strategy?
- Would updating HDB later (when we eventually get married) have any negative consequences?
- Has anyone done this before, and how was the experience?
Would love to hear your thoughts! Please correct me if I got any part about the grants wrong. Thank you.
