Angelic Gal abt the JOP....let me know if you still looking can give you a contact for mine. He was too good...had a lot of variations from simple to elaborate. All my guests were wowed by him. His explainations of each event and he made the whole atmosphere more cheerful, filling laughter now and then but yet very solemn.

This JOP is very special to me cos i've known him since i was a tiny little gal...and he saw the love bloom btw me n my hubby during our teenage years...Hi is a Sikh and will email you his contacts if interested.

Cheers Piggy

hi everybody!

wow - it's so nice to finally find a website/thread/post/forum that actually applies to indian brides in singapore!! and not to mention the lovely, helpful inhabitants of this thread...

i'm a singaporean marrying an aussie guy and the wedding is being held here. thing is, we are only here for the next month or so and then won't be here till a few weeks before our wedding (19/01/08) - so we have to pretty much get everything ready now! it's crazy and i'm sure you guys are all familiar with the stresses.

anyways, i'm loving all the advice (much needed) and am currently looking for a good decorator because our wedding has to look like a combination of cultures. any recommendations? (we are on a tight budget though...)

Hi ladies!

I am visiting this site again after 2 months of my wedding! Its been great so far! My wedding went fantastically! I did it in Tang rd temple with more than 1000 guests. It was a nightmare planning it! SO i understand the anxiety that some of u brides are going thru.
Well...to be of some help here's some info from my wedding. I engaged Pandora 2morrow for my wedding coordination and they did a fantastic job... thru Pandora i engaged Mayura for food and Mount Zion for sound and lights as well..The number of good comments I received really was icing on top of the cake for me after months of planning.
Angelic Gal i think you may want to view Pandora 2morrow's deco pics on friendster and some of my wedding pics are there too. His URL is www.friendster.com/24769032 Hsve a look.. and u can contact him at 92396619 and he can certainly link u up with the food sound VG and PG too.
Good luck girls!

Hi all,
Am new in this forum. Need some advice from you all. (actually quite a few enquiries)

Firstly, I am chinese and my HTB is mix chinese and Sri Lankan. I like to wear a saree for my banquet dinner. The thing is, I've signed up with a bridal shop and they allow only 1 MTM (either evening gown or day gown).

Do you think its wise for me to
1) Get the designer to design something for my EG that resembles a saree
2) Forgo the evening gown and then go rent one from the saree shops?
3) Go find a good indian tailor to tailor my saree?

If its to rent, do you gals have any idea what would be the likely cost? Also, if I chose to get it tailored, what would be the cost?

I am not looking at those heavy silk sarees. In fact I was even contemplating buying online. eg: http://www.cbazaar.com/Clothing/bigprdimgt.asp?prdintid=13504
Is this wise?

I've only worn a saree once with my MIL help. It would be best if I could get those tailored so I just have to slip on the skirt! hehe. easier and less stress.

Oh yes, I understand is there a difference between a sri lankan's saree with say a north india/south indian saree?

Sorry for asking so many questions.

hi ladies! it's all happening and i'm kinda balled over with the amount of work that a wedding involves. plus, i've got 3 parents and a step parent to please, very difficult.

anyhow, thanks van gop for the tip on pandora - i will contact him. i heard he's exp - is this true?

samiya - are u heading back to aust to settle down? which part?? we're from sydney.

and snowzie, depends on whether you are referring to the sri lankan tamil saree or the sri lankan singhalese saree. the former is the same as the indian style, while the latter has a completely differnet way of tying it. i have no idea abt saree rental though - but it sounds like you might be most comfortable in a pre-sitched outfit. why dun you seek for MIL's help, she will prob like being asked??

snowball05

New Member
Hi Kalpana,
Thanks! Yes its the sri lankan tamil. Its hard for me to ask my MIL cos she is not in Sg. I've told her abt my plans and she did mention that as long as I am comfortable go ahead. And I am quite concerned about asking the elders (ie. my HTB relatives) cos they might just end up expecting me to get a grand looking one!
happy.gif
And yes I prefer a pre-stitched outfit, so that I can wear it for my photoshoot.
Anyway, I will continue to search around. Thanks for your help!

Hi Kalpana!
I know how ur feeling rite now... and after it all ends u will be thinking.."was that it??!" When months of preparations come to an end in just a matter of hours there will be this strange mixed feeeling of delight, satisfaction and a lil bit of frustration when u think of the amount of work u put in for 3 or 4 hours for that 'once in ur lifetime' day...haha!
Anyways as to ur question of whether Pandora is exp....well what i can say is this...if u want something thats really different from your normal indian deco then his price is different..but if u want the normal stuff his pricing is the same as others... trust me ..I have not seen other indian decorators who can do the same kind of work that pandora does.... so its ur call..
happy.gif

Good luck lady and try to keep it intact ;)
Cheers~

snowzie, in that case, your saree will be in the same style as the south and north indian sarees. to get a pre sitched one, you probably need to go hunt around. perhaps upstairs at tekka market, you can ask and see if they know where you should get it. upper market stores like stylemart should be able to get it in, but they may expect u to deft buy from them. but on the other hand, the service is professional and all encompassing. depends on your budget.

vani! yeah - and i'm not that bridey to start with!! all i know is that alot of effort goes into the planning and even if u want to hire a planner, u have to do a fair bit of work to find a decent one. it's crazy. i'll chk out pandora because we want the wedding to reflect our cross cultural union and plus, the usual temple decor can get a bit clashing clashing if you know what i mean!

thanks for the help so far guys...looking forward to more interaction!

Hey gals,
Snowzie, I've seen per sitched sarees at Menu's fashion house near stylemart.

Vani,
I took pandora too for my ROM. Quite costly, I hope he does a gd job for the money we are paying him.

Hi there Ladies

Van Gop - Good to c u around. Nice to hear tht your wedding was the perfect flush of all your effort.

Snowie - U could get a nice saree from any shop in Tekka and get it stiched to the readymade one. U cn even wear it after your wedding, for other occassions.

Kalpana - I'm sure your parents will understand your preparations. Probably u could jus once in a while seek their advice.. at least they will feel needed. I think parents jus want to be acknowledged and give their advice.

Hey girls!

How's it going? Am now reeling from memories of my wedding day. Been barely just 2 weeks. But everything's happened so fast. Had both my customary wedding (morning) and hotel dinner reception (evening) on the same day i.e 2 June.

The day could have gone better if my mother wasn't throwing tantrums and if she would just play along. But no, she had to be difficult, insisting that she had everything under control and family need not be informed in advance if they were being deployed to help.

The second major gripe I have is a bit of a long story. So I'll post it separately for easy reading. In a nutshell, I wasn't happy with my MUA - Shereen of Saheli.

(cont)

The 2 major failings of Shereen and her mom I picked up were that they could not keep time and that she didn't have a lot of experience in tying sarees.

Out of the 3 occasions I had engaged her for, she was only early for one (the photoshoot). She was about 30-45min late for both the henna appt and the AD.

And this I think I had a part to play in my being late for my own wedding. I had earlier informed her that 3-4 of my aunties and SIL would need help with saree tying. And she was OK with that. But on the AD, both her and her mother (they work together) seemed unfocused and thrown by the fact that my aunties and SIL were all milling about in the room, waiting for their sarees to be tied. When they tied my SIL's saree, the pleats in her saree were everywhere! They didn't fall properly at all. When I asked if it could be neatened, they commented that it was something to do with the saree fabric but they tried to redo the whole saree again anyway. I thought the saree fabric excuse they gave was just lame because my SIL was wearing her wedding saree - which is a pattu saree.

By this time my cousin-in-law (CIL) had arrived and was trying to help my SIL with her saree. So Shereen and her mom got back to working on me and now, my saree. They were at it for a while until my CIL came to my rescue as well. By this time, my elder auntie was screaming from the living room how late we are. We were supposed to have left the home at 8am but we didn't leave until almost an hour later! Can you believe I was still in the lift and they were fretting about how the pallu wasn't falling correctly??? It was such a nightmare!!! I am so hoping the photos won't show my improperly-tied saree.

Anyway, at the temple, the priest reminded us to be quick about tying the wedding saree because we were running out of time so when we got to the changing room, my CIL did most of the tying with some assistance from Shereen. According to my mother, the thali was eventually tied 20min after the auspicious hour indicated on the invitation card.

I was so shaken by the morning's saree tying episode that I begged my CIL to come for dinner that night because I truly needed help with the saree I was wearing that evening. After that episode, I didn't have enough faith in Shereen and her mother to leave it up to them. So my CIL turned up at the suite that evening to help me with the tying. Shereen and her mother again helped with holding the saree up and handing my CIL the safety pins. But that was it.

I felt truly cheated because I had engaged Shereen as my MUA which includes make-up and saree tying. But she only lived up to one and that was make-up. Her make-up is almost faultless and although I had trouble telling her and reminding her of what I wanted for my hairstyle, she came through in that department. But she failed in the saree tying department.

So having rented a choker set from her for the evening reception, I asked if we can offset that charge ($25) for the saree tying that my CIL mostly did. But she refused. Her mother tried to reason that they still helped to tie the saree and if they were not needed at all, they would have left the temple after the make-up. But because they didn't, they need to be compensated rightly for their time. And then she adds that usually at weddings, the aunties or sisters would help with the saree tying. It wasn't just left entirely up to them to tie the saree.

I just thought that was a whole lot of bullshit. I mean, I wouldn't call what they did "assisting" with my saree tying. I could have gotten my hubs to hold up the saree and hand my CIL the safety pins because that was all Shereen and her mom did for my saree tying. And I honestly don't think your aunties and sisters are supposed to help you with your saree on your wedding day. That's what MUA are for, aren't they? And I didn't get what I paid for!

Anyway, I didn't see a point in pursuing the matter with Shereen or her mother, gave them that $25 for renting the accessories and saw the last of them.

If you're looking to engage them for henna and make-up, they are great in those departments. I won't take that away from them. But you will have to keep track of time for them, remind them of the timing and constantly check if they are on their way to the agreed venue.

But if you need them to tie sarees too, I'd say you are better off getting someone else.

HI Rany

U must hv been so mad with Shereen. I would be! Anyway every wedding sure got hiccups. It's like something to cast off the evil eyes.. my aunt would say. For my sis wedding, Menaka came 1hr late.. she slept through... Of cos everything was delaied by an hour.. nonetheless, Menaka did a swift job. Me still goin for shanti for dinner (Hvnt had trial). Glad tht I hv confirmed Menake for engagement and wedding.

I'm sure u must be really relived now tht the big day is over. I'm sure u were a perfect bride.

hi ladies!

wow - rany, i would haved been PISED! oh well, it's done now and you can get on with married life. shereen will get her comeuppins because all of us have been forewarned...

samiya - hey, mee too. except, i've been in sydney. it's been nearly 6 yrs. just in singapore now trying to get organised and then will come back again for wedding. we will get registered in sg too, on the day of the wedding. i love melbourne too though, i lived there for 2 yrs when i was younger. as for websites - there are close to none for indian bridal services. so u will need to scour this forum thread and take note of mobile numbers. when i'm a lil' more organised i will share with you what i've found but for now, everything is still a bit all over the place.

chick - congratulations! hope the day went well.
kismet - i fear i'm gonna be like you. i guess we just gotta remind ourselves to take long deep breaths.
sphire - yeah, been trying to get parents involved without having the hijack everything. delicate balancing act! ;P

anyhow, gd luck everybody...

Hey Rany, thanks for sharing your experience with shereen. Sorry to hear about it. i'm thinking of picking her up from her place since she lives quite near..or i might freak out if she's late for my henna. very very stressed and nervous about the wedding which is in less than a month's time. Been dreaming about it all the time. And the 'gawn' isn't fully organised still.

Hi Gals,

Thanks for all the well-wishes. I just finished Part 1 yesterday. Part 2 is on 30th, so my preparations not over!

Rany - Congrats dear! Maybe after you hear my story you wont feel so bad.

Things that went well:
1) Ceremony and all the day's events went well. Husband's side covered all the tasks very well.

2) Everyone commented that food tasted good.

3) PG and VG were excellent. William and Moses did such a great great job. Considering that we had no idea what to do, they guided us along. In fact they were even guiding my sis-in-law..hehe. I just hope that the pics turn out ok.....

Things that didnt go well:

1) Our turnout was poor. We spent additional 1K on tentage etc...but it was unnecessary. So reconsider if the decorators keep pushing you to get it.Yesterday was such a hot date, there were weddings at most temples yesterday both morning and evening. So think everyone's a bit disappointed.

2) Rany from Rupini's did a crap job for my hairstyle, makeup and my sari tying. Hairstyle i told her simple + bun, but i ended up NOT looking like myself and she refused to re-do my hair. My sari was tied horribly, i had so much excess material sticking out from the back, i looked double my size and the nice part of the sari could not even be seen. William (PG) and all my husband's relatives said she made me look darker though i'm between fair-medium for a sth indian. I spent $500 and she hardly did much. It was a waste of $$$. I'm now thinking of cancelling her for my church and dinner reception but running out of time.

3) We ordered 650 pax, had only half the crowd but dishes like the mutton finished. How the hell is that possible? Also, things like veg cutlet were supposed to be fried on the spot, but came cold. What pisses me off big time is that Lakshmi from Gokul is my friend, cant believe they deceive people until like that. If the crowd was huge, we may not have noticed, but the discrepancy was too glaring.

Anyway, the day is over. Hope my 30th wedding ceremony goes ok. Kismet and SK, all the best in your wedding preps.

Kismet - received your card, thanks. Its so lovely. Where did you get it done? Unfortunately i wont be able to attend sangeet, cos its just the day before and i'll be swamped, informed amrit already..wanna wish you all the best in advance, will come visit you after the wedding. When do you go to Aus?

Yen - i really dont think you can rent sari. You can get cheap ones from places like Haniffa in Serangoon road. Go try.

singbride

New Member
Hi ladies,

Chick - Sorry to hear abt Rupini's and the food issue. But on the bright side the food tasted good right? If u aren't happy with Rany u might want to consider someone else for the other ceremonies?

Yen - Like Chick said, you are better off buying a sari from Haniffa or Jewel Palace. It wouldn't cost all that much.

My preps are coming along slowly. Come tomorrow it will be exactly 1 month away from the start of my wedding events...Starting to get butterflies in my stomach...There are still loose ends to tie :p. The list of stuff to buy seems to be never-ending...

Hope you gals are doing well...

HI gals....i can understand all the tension and fusing goign on as dates get closer.

Chick i had both William & Moses too. Moses is great wid ceremony etiquettes.

Yen, i understand tat u wanna rent cos you wont be wearing the sari again. I can lend you one of mine (have so many) but honestly i believe u'd need one or two sarees. They'll definitely come in use. Get something light weight. Have non-indian frens (no indian boyfriend/husband/partner, etc. too) but they do once in awhile wear sarees to wedding whether or not it's an indian wedding. You'll definitely stand out. You can some really affordable sarees (in the range of $100 or more) from Haniffa as mentioned otherwise Mustafa or shops along serangoon road opposite Haniffa. You may also rent it from Saheli or Babli i think. Call and check on it. But honestly the price you'd rather add-on and be able to keep it. Do let me know if you still cant get a sari.

Call Jyue huey at 93875704. http://www.the-makeuproom.com/

She did an amazing job with my make-up and she works with Ashley a very creative hairstylist. You wont regret a moment.

Had a great time at m y wedding with the great make-up. For the temple wedding i started at 7.30am and at 9pm when all ceremonies ended and i went to the hotel...my make-up was as fresh and perfect as in the morning. MUA did not follow me to the temple...no touch up nothing. Even did my photoshoot with William after the wedding and didnt have to worry abt a shiny face...just had my glowing face for the camera all day!!!!!LOL

Dear ladies,

It has been ages since I stepped in here
happy.gif
I guess after our weddings are over most of us just get so tied up with our new lives that we disappear from here. Anyway it's always good to catch up with you guys.

Rany - Sweets, you poor thing! so sorry to hear abt your episode but nevertheless, i'm sure you looked ravishing, and trust me, your guests would have been mesmerized by your pretty face and hair to notice the sari. Try to forget it la, and focus on more impt things, like the great sex and honeymoon! hahaha...

I had shereen to do my henna...she charges an outrageous price i think and she rushed thru the whole thing...although it turned out beautifully, it wasn't as intricate as I hoped and yes she was late... in terms of sari tying, shanti is really good. but I thought her hairstyling was so so only.

For my wedding, I had a Malay MUA from MediaCorp and she brought along a fantastic hairstylist. So really, even though I paid for one, I had two pple working on me all the time. It really sped things up. for sari tying, although she's not as good as Shanti, she was a great help cos she's done it for Ms Vasantham before. I did my own pleats and she helped to smooth them down. I didn't mind changing with the hairstylist cos the guys is soooooo gay. They were really funny and I throughly enjoyed my time with them. Although her makeup is abit heavy, it turned out very very nicely in the photos and video. The other MUA I had for my henna nite, Aisha, was also very good. Everyone loved her makeup but in photos, my wedding one looked better. Aisha is really good tho, comes very very early and will help you to no end. in terms of personality, she was a nicer person than my wedding day MUA. For both days, a total of 6 outfits make-up and hairstyle, I only paid $500. I wanted to go back to Shanti after my engagement, but I thought $700 was ridiculous.

Others - I know some of you were asking bout ready-made saris. You may want to check out the selection of saris in Haniffa Textiles. For about $300, you get really gorgeous pieces that would cost double at Stylemart. I know a very good tailor called UMY enterprises. Dun go to the tekka market ones. Stitching not good. It'll gost you about $100 for ready made sari and blouse but trust me, her stitching is very good and worth the money.

Food - Service and taste wise, I still highly recommend Muthu's. The servings are very generous and the moment food is running out, they top up from their restaurant. The food is piping hot and really, even their veg food was so good, my non-veg guests ate it all up. I recommend them even above my own wedding caterer cos I am so impressed with their service and standards.

All the best ladies....enjoy this special moment in your lives...

We need to pick an Indian veg caterer for our temple wedding and would love to hear your recommendations. Am so confused..Ananda Bhavan/Gayathri's/Muthu's/Mayura...
do any of these places (or other places) offer food tasting? Will be so good if you could help me out with your impressions...
