Recently i found that my BB will limp if she lie down to rest then stand up to try to walk... she like jump and jump for a while then become normal.
Her left leg will like 'yi kwai yi kwai'
how come huh?
anyone's dog have problem same as mine?
your golden reminds me of the time mine was a baby. She's 14mths old now and her (Coco) bd is on christmas day.
S&A forever, there are many reasons why a dog can limp. I had a whole list of problems with my dog since she was 4 months old. She just had a knee surgery and is recovering, hopefully solved the problem permanently now. Do go see a vet soon.
i hope your baobei leg is ok by now. is she or he in pain, if not i think should be ok? sometimes, my cocker is also like that, maybe in the same position for a long time that is why abit numb. then try to massage his leg or thigh abit.
i wanted to post my doggies pics here but i duno how to resize my pics as they are very big file.
Thank you. My BB still the same. limp whenever she stay in a position too long. Is it realli numb? she is not in pain. I touch her leg, it seems ok... Maybe bringing her to see doc this weekend. Heres my poodle... Her hair is longer now...
ok if u can then bring your dog to see vet. i think should be ok since no much pain. otherwise, ur dog would be crying liao right, dun worry.
minty, my maltese is 10 yrs old liao, i also very sad that he is getting older n will die one day. but this is unavoidable, so now we must do our best to treat them good good n they would be happy for their old age.
many times i wish i am a vet. should study vet instead.
i used to hv a black n white border collie of 10yrs old who contracted bone tumour & one of the leg has to be amputated in order to prolong his life. tat time i was very upset but after the surgery he managed to survive for another 2yrs bef contracting stroke n cant move anymore. he will shit n wee on the same position & my family took care of him till we no longer wanna let the dog suffer n put him to sleep
tat was 5yrs ago.
u need to handle old dogs with alot of tlc & be very particular abt their diet cos' their digestn sys might not be tat gd & their teeth n gums r also weakening day by day. try not to give ur dog too hard food & rem to go wif some health supplements. also, senior dogs need lots of rest n not be subjected to too much strenuous activities.
my baby is called benji and he'll be 1 year 3 mths soon. He looks just like oraia's dog. =)
Jumped, my baby had hip dysplasia so imagine how upset i was when i heard it. he went thro 2 operations and now he's ok. u can't really tell unless u look closely. what happened to yours to warrant a knee op?
btw, which sea/pond is that? i used to take mine to east coast, which was really dirty. the water in your pic looks very clean.
I saw that movie too. Yes, it is indeed boring and only interesting till the part on how the husky have to fight to their survival. Almost cried when the one stuck by the chain died and when the alpha was so injured.
yeah, very painful for me. the 1st vet i sent him to didn't even detect it even tho we told her that he was sitting most of the time and refused to walk. we thot he was lazy and used to drag him out to walk!! felt awful when we realised the truth. spent lots of $$ too....
haha, better not have a dog if u can't afford it.
the 2nd vet said that if we had sent him earlier, he might not even need to go for an operation. i was so angry when i heard that. wanted to sue the 1st vet.
yeah, cried too. actually didn't expect any dogs to die cos it's a feel-good walt disney show. really goes to show that dogs are really intelligent creatures and man's best fren! =)
Just to share my experience on taking care of my old pooodle.
I used to have a toy poodle but had pass away last dec. I have keep him for 16 years. Before he have the problem of standing/walking, he already cannot hear, and one eye is blind.
As for my poodle, a year before he died, he already cannot walk/stand proberly, i did buy him subplement from the vat for his bone.
At the later part, he totally can not walk. So when he want to urine, he will bark or move his leg to alert us. Then we will just carry him to the newspaper and put him in standing position.
We also put cloth on his bed, if he urine there then we will change the cloth (just like changing baby pamper).
At that stage, although he can not walk , but he is till a alert dog, he till eat, when i come back from work, he will welcome me, he like to be sayang .........
Later part, he start not eating much or evening eat lesser and lesser. Most of the time he will be sleeping. First thing i do when i reach home, i will carry him to tell him i am back (as he cannot hear anymore).
Because he do not eat, he loose a lot of weight, and the vet ask me to try to feed him liquid food (inject to the mouth) and the doctor also inject some vitamin for him. He used to sleep on the floor near my bed but at the later stage i let him to sleep on my bed becasue i can sense he may just go to sleep and never wake up.
But 2 week later, he "fa yang dian" when i was working. When i rush home, he already like half died. i rush him to the hospital, he died in my arm.
My mum told me, the dog is waiting to see me, before he died.
Please do not be discourage after reading my story. The aging dog may cause u alot of medical fee or time to take care of him. But if u think the dog is part of your family memeber (not just a pet), you will really want to try all out not giving up easily (like put dog to sleep).
THE DOGS NEED US MOST WHEN THEY GROW OLD
I heard from a friend that for poodle it is common to face leg problem when the dog go old. As for Jack Rusell is skin problem.......Different type of dogs will face differnce difficulty when come to old age.
My dog had some bone fragments lodged in her knee which causes limpng after exercises and long sleep. That was when she was 4 months old. Then during this chinese new yr brought her to dog run and her ligament just "snapped" as she was running. After an xray, realised those bone fragments were sticking out badly so she could not straighten her knee and it affected the ligaments.
So went for surgery to saw off those fragments. I was so sad for her to see the shaven legs after op.
Anyway, since she was under GA, I asked the doc to do a hip xray and she has mild hip dysplasia on the right and moderate on the left. Doc said that all big dogs have it, its just a matter of how bad it is. So now that i know, can just take precautions and i dropped her weight from 31 to 25Kg now. Actually i would urge all large dog owners to get a hip xray if ur doggies are under GA for something else. Finding out early is useful rather than by the time the symtoms appear, there are less remedies.
And oraia, if a large dog has HD, it can be shown on xray from 6-9 months old.
The best exercise for dogs with HD or knee probs is swimming. I try to make it on alternate days. That's sentosa in the pic. It's clean if u go during high tide.
My dog is a rather (understatement) fussy eater. Currently, she's eating Purina lamb biscuits, Solid Gold lamb pellets and Solid Gold canned lamb food but sometimes she refused to eat all three!!! That leaves me with no choice but to feed her the all-time favourite - white bread. May I know what do you ladies feed your dogs and how to make her eat her food?
Hi Irene, thanks for sharing! Abt my pup, Bubble, she doesn't like rice and we do not want to try again because the thing with mini schnauzers, they get their beard all sticky and dirty when they eat rice. It was quite a horror trying to get the rice out of her beard the last time. I mix wet and dry food for her daily but she tire of the food!!! So I resorted to feeding her bread and sometimes even cook carrots with chicken drumstick for her. Sigh...
Anyone knows of how to help a dog lose weight? My dog is horribly overweight.. Cos my family members always feeding him all kinds of food.. He is so fat that he has difficulty walking properly.. Starting to worry about his health, cos he is not young liao..
Tried several methods to put him on a diet.. But din realli work.. Anyone got any suggestions?
maybe u shld get yr family to stop feeding him those "junk" food , old dogs only need a meal a day, even occasional treats should be proper dog treats. Our tibits/food consist of too much sugar and salt..dogs shouldnt be taking all these. If u are relli clueless to help him lose weight, perhaps u shld consult a vet to help u.
Cos if lose weight too drastically, perhaps the dog couldnt take it too.
i put my dog on a weight-loss diet. So how successful is 6kg lost in 2 months? And like Irene said, too drastic lost is not healthy too. I dint aproach a vet, i just did some research on the internet.
1) totally stop all tidbits and treats. They add up to substantial calories, especially if everybody in the family gives a little. You can replace the treats with fruits like apples, bananas, organic seeds.
2) Cut off half of the usual dog food and replace with fresh veggies. They are low in calories and healthy. In order for the dog to have a sense of fullness, you can feed excellent vegs like pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, peas, celery, asparagus, cauliflower, lettuce.
No rice, corn, potatos, bread. Too high in carbo.
3) Alot of websites says that feeding twice a day is recommended for a dieting dog. So they wont feel hungry. You can divide that portion and feed twice a day. Preferably 2/3 in the morning, 1/3 evening.
4) doggie can food are also high in calories and preservatives. cut that if you can.
Weigh your dog every few days, you should see it shedding some pounds. If not, you have to send to the vet to do a blood test.
I have a shih tzu that is 3.5 mths old. I have problem cleaning her ears because she keeps struggling and i was told that i have to remove the hair inside the ear but i can't bear to do it cause everytime when i try she will start whining.
Would like some advises on this as i am a first time owner
U might want to try using the tweezers and put out only a few strands at one time, and massage your dog's ear while pulling it out to distract it from feeling painful. Agree with stepford that u have to be firm now or never yr dog will let u touch it's ear again when it grow older.
Whining is normal especially when they are still in puppy stage, they will soon get used to it and enjoy the ear cleaning in future.
maybe u can get someone to help u to hold ur doggie down in stationary position then you clean. what u use to clean? ear cleaning soln and cotton buds? i think if the hair inside the ear is not too much maybe should just leave it alone as urs only 3.5mths. hair can act as protection for the ears too. if really too much hair and very dirty then just tweezers to pluck out hair slowly. must train ur puppy to be used to all these cleaning like brushing teeth, cutting nails, comb hair when they young if not when they grow bigger n strong they will struggle MORE.
ivy: which beach u go to in sentosa? usually fornightly we will go to tanjong beach with my hb n two dogs.
princess lee: to toilet train ur puppy. u must deisgnate a area for him. if he pee at the wrong place then bring him to see n scold him, best to lecture him if caught in act. then maybe u can use tissue n wipe up some of his urine n placed this tissue on the newpapers at the correct place. hopefully he can smell the tissue with his urine n recognise that as his pee pee area.
i confined my puppy in a room, door open, but entrance blocked so that i still can see him, for at least 2 months, lay at least half the room with newspapers. Week by week i slowly reduce his newspaper bit by bit, until he pee and shit on 2 square pieces of newspaper. I only let him out play a while, literally let him eat/play/sleep inside or i go in and play with him.
I also got spray the "house breaking aid" a kinda solution available in pet shops to help puppy recognise where to urine.
Never place his food or toys on the newspapers, cos they dont mix food with poo..haha
Slowly he learnt how to recognise newspapers, i leave him to roam the house, i simply lay newspapers in one corner of my kitchen area, he does his business there.
Of cos there are times he aim wrongly and pee on the floor, he get scoldings from me and i spray rice vinegar mix with water, to remove the urine smell, so he wont pee on that area again.
Gota have patience to train..some need up to 6 months to train.
Hi princess lee, to add to what the others have said, I also give my pup treats when she does it correctly but a stern scolding, while wagging my finger at the poo/urine to mean she had done something wrong. It took me about a week to paper train my pup. So be patient.
wondering if any of u heard about "congenital microphthalmia"-eye not being developed properly..my dog was diagnosed with this problem at 8 months of age, very sad, eventually he turn blind in one eye as he got cataract (caused by the above birth defect), the other eye is healthy. Surgery will help, around 80% success rate he see again in that eye but it costs S$3000. Surgery done by an eye specialist from Australia.
Basically i have up till end of the year to consider..but im confused whether to go ahead or not. I mean..it's a lot of $$.
My hubbi not very encouraging..thinks im mad to pay so much $$ for a dog surgery....
