Before grinding or faceting can begin, workers saw the rough into usable sections. After sawing, a cutter grinds the rough into the finished gem’s approximate shape to create a preform. Next, a cutter secures the preform onto a dopstick with adhesive and grinds a cone shape to form what will become the gem’s pavilion. The initial faceting of the pavilion results in eight equal planes. From the eight planes, a cutter polishes the gem’s lower girdle and pavilion main facets. The brass faceting head allows the cutter to control the gem and ensure the correct angle for each facet. A cutter removes the preform from the dopstick, turns it around, and reattaches it. The cutter then grinds a flat plane that will become the gem’s table facet. When the plane for the table facet is complete, a cutter polishes the rest of the crown, stating with eight equal flat planes that later form the gem’s star, main, and upper girdle facets.
