Choir For Catholic Church

hi crescent,
which church are you from? Usually Catholic churches should have more than one choir (separate choir for each mass time).

Maybe can get contacts of the choir from another church, and see if they can help?

hi tootsieroll,

the choir in my church is not good... I won't mention the name of the church but I'm having problems cos I like the church but I can't find an alternative choir. Are there choirs who will come to my church if they're not from mine?

well.. what you can do is round up a couple of your friends who can sing and they can form the choir. the church allows other choirs to sing. if not, you might want to consider hiring a choir from outside to sing for you. would help if they are friends or friends of friends cos it'd make the whole experience more enjoyable.

I agree with KrispyKreme, can always gather some of your kaki to sing for you. I planned my wedding from overseas, so didn't manage to meet with my choir. But I emailed them lots of times to tell them my requirements.....on the day, to be honest, the music wasn't wonderful (I hate synthetic organ sounds), but just ignore it and still enjoy the occasion anyway

Hi Crescent

I'm sure you can. There are at least 3 choirs in Risen Christ now (Sat 6pm, Sun 9.30am and Sun 11am). Just have a chat with the choir coordinators.

hi mrs n,

I have spoken to the secretary of CRisen Christ, she says have to ask them cos they may not be able to help as they have their own events/functions to practice on..

do u have any idea how much the choir of the Risen Christ charge?

how long do i need to approach them, my wedding in oct 07?

Hi Crescent

Not so sure about costs, I think you'll have a better idea if you speak to the choir master or mistress themselves.

You could try and attend these three masses on some weekends and see which choir appeals to you and then approach the choir coordinator after mass. Speak to either Mona or Steven for Sat 6pm choir or Esther (I think) for Sun 9.30am choir. Not so sure about 11 am but if you hang around the choir loft after mass, I'm sure someone should be able to point you out to the person in charge.

Personally, I don't see any harm in approaching them now at least you know what their expectaions are and whether it is in line with yours. Better to know earlier on in your planning stage rather than later.

Hi carpediem,

Just wondering wat's the cost for engaging choir from Christ The King? For how many people?

I found this lady who's playing in novena. she's charging abut $350-400 for herself, a violinst and someone to sing. Is that very exp?

Shine,
I had my wedding mass at OLPS. Not sure about the other churches, but it was a free service, I just arranged for the choir to come sing, and let them know my requirements. We just tipped them $10 per choir member, same for the altar boys.

Hi,

I will be having my wedding mass on a weekday (Boxing Day) and have engaged the services of Mr Philip Lye who's an organist cum soloist.

Found his ad in the Catholic News and also found great reviews about him on the Catholic Brides thread. Here's his contact:6566 1683

He is charging $100. You only need to pay him on that day itself.

I have spoken to him a couple of times and found him to be very friendly in terms of finding the right hymns. He will discuss with you on your preference and then give his input. He will also do the commenting for you on that day. Very approachable fellow.

Hi Petrina,

Had my wedding already and it went v well.

Philip has a great voice and he plays the organ well too so it was ok for him to just sing solo. His wife came along too and for a couple of my songs she joined him to sing as well.

For my case, only a few of the congregation sang as my husband's family is non-Catholic so they don't know the songs.

I've uploaded my bulletin on my website. I don't know if it would be useful in this thread but perhaps would be able to help brides have a look at the songs that others have used to help in their selection:

I'm getting St Theresa Church's band though my wedding won't be held there. My sibling attends there, so we engage them instead.

Hi everyone!

I am new to this thread... Hope to exchange information with all of you.

I have been looking out for wedding/ unity candles for church wedding. Some places that I've been are selling at rather costly prices (around $100). I only managed to find someone making these at Yahoo Singapore selling at reasonable price, yet elegant looking. Anyone knows where to buy unity candles at reasonable prices?

In case you are interested in the source, type "Unity Candles" under Auction Search.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi all, just wondering if you might know...we'll be having a catholic service instead of a full wedding...so in that case, i'm not sure how much of singing is actually needed and should i really get a choir or just a few to do acappella instead?

Hi, I think for service, you do not need too many songs. Usually, an Entrance Hymn , responsorial psalm, another song for the signing of the register, maybe another for when you do the consecration to Mary ... thats all you probably need. Oh yah, if you need an organist, you can contact my friend. He conducts one of the choirs in Risen christ (11.30am) mass and plays the organ too... He has done many weddings in our parish... you want his contact?

Hi... just asked him.. he usually charges around 150 dollars for the weddings held in his parish.. he will play the organ/keyboard and lead in the singing as well.. he will give you song suggestions... some samples of wedding booklets if you need too.. you could pop down to Risen Christ church for the 1130 am mass.. and then decide if you would like him to help out at your wedding celebration. yup... oh yah , if you need additional singers, he could arrange for you too..

msclaire,
which parish will you be holding your wedding at? Have you considered Philip Lye as many brides have suggested and used his service too?

I never thought that there's a rate to pay for choir singing.. is there? I thought it's always a love token that is up to the couple to decide..

Hi Janelle,

That used to be the case decades ago although some choirs still go by love token given by the couple. For those choirs that charges a fee, it usually goes into their choir fund.

Hi cookiemonster,

You can get your own choir or ask the church choir to sing for you. Depends on whether you are holding it in the chapel downstairs or at the main hall, you can decide how many people you wish to have in the choir.

I held mine in the chapel so I only had 3 people singing for the mass. IIRC, I paid like $180. Ask the parish secretariat for the choir contact number. They are very helpful.

Hi Sea Blue, can I have the contact of your choir? I think 3 pp at S$ 180 is reasonable. Thank you.

I love my choir singer-he is Philip Lye. He is fantastic and I enjoy alot. You can contact him at 65661683/ 98169128. And plus, the charge for the choir is so reasonable. 3 Cheers to this amazing choir singer. He usually operates as 1 man show, but occasionally his wife will help him. I am so glad that i had him for my church wedding.

Adelene Tan,

Do I have to select my own songs and then liase with Philip? or how to co-ordinate for the song selection part? Can enlighten me the procedure? I have engaged him also for my wedding in dec. The last we spoke was last yr dec. I thinking I have to ring him up to remind him again.

Forget to add, do i have to speak to the Father/priest of the church on the songs/hymns i want in my service? or select first then go to Father/priest for approval? After this, then to Philip or what???

Would it be possible to engage the church choir to just sing the "march-in song"?

I'm not a Catholic but my HTB is, so I guess we won't be having the full mass service.

krystal80

New Member
hi yallo, typically the bridal procession music/song is instrumental...so you aren't supposed to have words =) The organist/pianist can play something for you though...

You're most probably going to be having just a wedding service which means there's no communion given out during the wedding =)

But u can always double check with the priest that you're planning to have celebrate your wedding =)

yallo

New Member
Ohhhh must be instrumental only?

I was actually thinking of getting some choral songs (been listening to Libera, they really have angelic voices!). For my sister's wedding (she's a Catholic) her choir lined the aisle and sang her march-in song, which I thought was really nice, so was hoping to do something similar. Don't really want to use the usual wedding march or canon in D songs heh.

krystal80

that's the understanding that I have lah =)

but u can check with the priest celebrating your wedding service if he's ok with it =)
