Hi all

I'm thinking of making a cheongsam for the dinner, anybody knows of any good tailor? Any idea on how much it costs? Am really quite blur on this, would appreciate all comments!

Thanx!

Hi gals,

When would you be wearing your cheongsam? Just want to know 'cos interested in making one too...but dun know when's a appropriate time. During cocktail or dinner?

Hi ixwong

I think when u wear the cheongsam will depend largely on the design of the dress, a simple one will be appropriate for either the dinner or the cocktail, but an elaborate one will be for the dinner definitely.

I'm thinking of wearing one for the last outfit change, to send off the guests.

hi Annie,

the cheongsam i get is for both tea ceremony and the
last outfit to see my guests off in wedding banquet.

as it's going to be worn during dinner time, i choose to make it full-length. i'd suggest you to make a full-length one with more elaborate fabric if you are also considering to wear it during dinner.

hi tulips,

i guess $300 budget will be ok for a long cheongsum.

i spend $315 for mine. i reqest doreen to do some beading on the see-through back(with organza), along collar, sleeves and the slit. the effect was quite nice.

give her a call(tel: 7377101) and pay her a visit. if you find her design to your favour, then you might just need to spend within your budget!

Hi uma

wat fabric did Doreen use to make ur cheongsam? The design sounds nice...;) I'm thinking of a long one in Chinese silk, either pale gold or pink color with minimum embellishments. My budget is also preferably within $300-$350. Wonder if that is feasible?

Hi jenny

ur cheongsam sounds good! Coz i intend to wear it to see off my guests as well, so will want it to be long. Do you think Emmanuel B. charges $300 for a long cheongsam too?

Hi tulips

haf u met up with Doreen yet? Do share with me ur meeting! Was thinking of visiting her on Monday, but by the time i knock off and go to the shop, it was closed already!! Boo hoooo :~~(

hi annie

i've just called up her shop to look for her but she's not in. can't see her tomorrow coz she's fully booked too. will have to wait for the girl who answered my call (her name is gaby) to let me know if doreen is free to meet me on friday.

if i do finally get to meet her, will let u know the outcome. :)

hi Annie,

mine is in sheng-don silk(sorry i'm not very sure about the spelling^_^)

from what you've described above, i guess you should be able to get it done within your budget...

hi gals

I made a long cheongsam from Margaret Brides. She used Swiss Brocade & i paid $980 for that. I think it's worth it coz'i can see & feel that the fabric she chose for me is very good. I also love the cutting & design of my cheongsam. It is a modern haltered neckline with slight mermaid style which hide my heavy bottom.

So, another recommendation for anyone who want wonderful cutting & rich fabric for a cheongsam as i know Margaret Brides has one of her seamstresses that specialise on cheongsam.

I been to MB but am not impressed by her designs. This message from Meulise proves it - you have a heavy bottom and she recommended a mermaid style? And how can her seamstress specialises in cheongsam designs (traditional craft) and still cut a 'modern style'? It is a strange contradiction. But must say the price is quite reasonable.

hi annie

i've met up with doreen last friday. she's very nice and friendly. :)

i made a long cheongsum (in 'shang dong' silk), with side slits. the price she charge is very much affordable for me. :p

hello meulise

i also like MB's cheongsum.. but too bad, the cost of her cheongsum is out of my budget.

annie

hi tulips

how much did Doreen charge u for the cheongsam?

Hi meulise

Tks for the suggestion, but i didn't click with MB when i visited her, plus her charges are way above my budget.

hello annie

after discount of 15% (coz i told her i was recommended by S'poreBrides, i pay only $276. i did not ask for embroideries but if i did, it'll cost me a total of about $325 (if i rem correctly). :p

hope this helps! :)

hi Meulise,

i don't mean to depress you but have you tried the MB cheongsum on already?

in my personal view, i feel that a "mermaid cut" will draw attention to your hips. the design that can actually hide your hips beter will be a "A line" cut.

besides, a haltered-neck design will kind of make your upper body looks smaller...it may eventually bring greater contrast to your upper body and bottom.

well i'm saying all these base on the describtion you gave above...i really hope that i was wrong.

samantha

Meulise,
I agree with Serene - a mermaid cut will definitely put emphasis to your hips. I really do hope you had tried on a similar piece before you decided on such a style.

Tulips,
Good for you to have a made-to-measure cheongsam at such an attractive price!!!!

Hi Samantha & Serene,

Everyone has a personal opinion on what looks good on a person. Personally, I'm hopeless at fashion, having absolutely no idea between the different cuts, the different designs, and of course the various styles out there. But, I've always felt that as long as the person wearing the gown, cheongsam, whatsoever is happy with it, we should just leave it be. After all, most if not all of us in here have not seen how Meulise looks in it, or, how the design looks. Shouldn't we all just be abit more tolerant before posting in our criticisms when we do not even know all the details?

Hi anon

Don't think Samantha & Serene are criticising Meulise, they're offering their opinions on what a mermaid style generally does to a figure. In fact, all the designers I spoke to told me heavy bottoms are not suitable for mermaid styles coz of the reasons Samatha & Serene mentioned.

But Meulise, if Margaret suggested a mermaid style for you with halter neck, and you look good in the gown, it'll just suggest that your bottom is not that heavy after all! :D At the end of the day, as long as you like the gown and your FH loves the way you look, don't worry too much about what other people say :)

Hi tulips

Wow!! The price Doreen quoted you is SOOOOOOOo GOOOOOOOD!!!!! Are you using any beading, or any other details? This is really attractive, think I'll try to go see her this Saturday! Great!!

P.S. Icon at Orchard Emerald is having a cheongsam sale, i haven't had the time to see yet, maybe u'd like to take a look too? ;)

hi annie

i saw the embroideries she does for other pple's cheongsum and it looks very nice. but i'm more incline towards simplistic, so i did not add on any details, beadings etc. just made a plain simple cheongsum. :)

do remember to make appt with her, so as to ensure that she's around to attend to you.

paid deposit for the MTM cheongsum already, so there's no turning back for me. :p most probably, i'll have my cheongsum fitting beginning of jan. this sat, my 1st fitting and trial makeup with MB. oh.. so excited at the thought of it. will be made up pretty pretty on my birthday!! (this sat's my birthday). :þ

hi anon,

i feel sad when i saw your posting.
my intention wasn't to criticize the design, if you have really read my posting...

everyone of us wants to be the most beatiful bride right? shouldn't we give each other suggestions?
of course, to take it or leave it is really up to individual... i was just trying to help.

hi tulips,

glad that you've found something you like at quite affordable price!! ^_^

so what color and fabric is your cheongsum?
mayce you've seen mine in Doreen's shop also, i'm going to collect it tomorrow night.

i'll assure you about Doreen's service: i had three fittings altogether, she was always patient and tried to meet up with all my requests.

hi uma

i chose a dark red colour (shangdong silk). how about u? what colour and design is yours? maybe i might have seen it. :)

i just went to see her last friday, and i gave her a short period to make it, but she's very nice to try and accomodate my request.

i want it ready for my photo shoot in Jan 01, and she'll be calling me for my 1st fitting maybe end of this month or early next month. :þ

did she design for u or u told her what kind of cutting u like?? :)

uma

hi tulips,

mine is pale olive shangdong silk...with tiny sleeves, lower cut collar and sheer back.

at first i only knew that i whated something with lower collar, as i just couldn't stand something make me feel "choked" (too bad, can't wear lots of beatiful chokers as well)

Doreen suggested to make tiny sleeves as i have quite broad shoulders that may not look so nice in sleeveless design.

then i saw a sheer back cheongsam in her shop, so we incorporated this design as well.

it was very pleasant to "design" the cheongsam together with her ^_^

hi ixwong,

the time required to make the cheongsam is really flexible, depends on how soon you need it to be done.
my first visit to Doreen was in early Oct, but i only need it at the end of Dec, so i told her to take her time. i know she can make it within 2-3 weeks time if you request.

Hi Samantha, Serene and Anon,

Please refer to the posting by Meulise again. It was written that her cheongsam design was of SLIGHT mermaid style. It wasn't really a mermaid cut. It is possible to have a slight mermaid design for figure with more endowed posterior.

Regards,
Chin Leng.

hi all,

anyone happen to know the cheongsum tailor who used to do for our late first lady? have been searching for her shop, pple said it's @ Ngee Ann City, but i couldn't find it.

gals, appreciate your help to tell me the location. thanks in advance.

Hi stacy

The brand is Elisa, but the shop is not that name, can't remember what the name is :p Anyway the shop is on the 5th floor of Takashimaya, it's one floor up from the POSB/Post Office floor. Take the escalators within Takashimay Dept Store up all the way to the 5th floor, you'll reach Best electrical store. The cheongsam shop is just outside Best. But don't go looking for an elaborately furnished shop, the shop doesn't look grand, in fact it looks like a normal Chinatown shop, with white fluoroscent lights. The cheongsams on the rack doesn't offer so much variety for the bride, as for the bride's mother.

Doreen sounded so good here....Hmm...it's tickling me a bit...Does she do other gowns too? I am think of letting her do my bridesmaids dresses too. Does the price you gals mentioned above include cost of cloth? Thanks for your help.

No problem

If you're thinking of making a cheongsam for ur mom from Elisa, then I'm sure she would be ur best choice, coz her designs are quite traditional and the handiwork is quite good.

Hi Linda

Yea Doreen does bridesmaids dresses too. Her shop is full of pretty dresses u can wear for occassions or just on any ordinary day. The prices above include the costs of cloth. In fact, Doreen doesn't accept cloths you bring yourself, u need to select from her collection.

Dear All,

I heard from my friends that there are 2 shops located at Orchard Tower that makes cheong sum. One of them is formerly from china silk house and the other is supposedly from HK.You may also want to try Chinatown's Yue Hwa ready-made cheong sum... not sure if they have tailoring services. Alternatively you can look out for bridal shops that are holding 'clearance sale' to make way for their new collections. I managed to buy a red lace and beaded cheong sum at one of such sales for only $100.

How can we find out where is having such a sale? I heard that there are gowns on sales too....
Anyone thinking of going to Bangkok to tailor make? With our exchange rate, it's cheaper there too....

cheers

New Member
These shop advertise the sale in the papers. You will have to lookout for it. If and when you walk pass any bridal shops... just keep a look out for their clearance rack (usually at the front of the shop). Heard that inspiration collection at Delfi Orchard sell their both gowns( white and evenings). You may want to check it out.

Hi Princessz,

I just popped by Doreen's shop yesterday and I saw a very beautiful cheongsam. It was light blue and was for a customer. Hopefully if you pop down today and it may still be there.

If you are popping by Emanuel B. Couture, you may like to take a look at their evening gowns too because they are having a sale now.

Hi everyone,

I have tailored a cheongsam and intended to wear it as a EG. The reason being I could not find a satified one from my bridal shop.

Do you think it is funny to take cheongsam as a EG??? Pls give me your comments.

Also, can you recommend me bridal shops where I can just rent OTR EG without costing me a bomb.

Thanks.

Just,

Hi Kiroro,

Thanks for your comments.

But what hairstyle should I go with the cheongsum and at the same time it must go well with the WG?

I am really worried that my hairstylist couldn't do a good job.

Thks.

Just,
Julygal

Hi Julygal

do u have long or short hair ?

if it is long, go for the wavy big curls style, and add a diamante clip at the side.

Hi Kiroro,

I have long hair. However, I am thinking of bun it up as I feel it will be more neat. Furthermore, my choengsam has a organza back with some embo.

My hairstylist has done a 'cheena' one for me during the photoshoot. Looks ok if I am not having WG prior to me.

Other than the one you recommended, any other style you think is good?

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Julygal
