Brilliant Rose

Think I posted this somewhere but I can't remember where. Anyway, I really do need advice. My soon-to-be husband just bought me a Brilliant Rose. I know nothing about diamonds and am afraid he might be paying too much for a 'fancy'(which I kept hearing everyone say) cut. Why is it so different from the rest of the cuts? The sales person was going on and on about how good this cut is and I was amazed when she flashed a 'conventional' one with a Brilliant Rose in a darker place. The latter seems to dazzle more! Am I just blinded by her words or what?

Of cos the Brilliant Rose will be more sparkling than a conventional one as the B.R has more facets cut on the stone itself.

Maybe you can take a look at the below website
for more understanding.

I think each manufacturer has their own special cut. Probably you can read up each of them to understand more. More importantly, I think whether you like it, the price is reasonable and within your budget.

Read around on the net but it seems like Brilliant Rose is not a very popular choice of diamond because it is a different cut from the rest and also it appears smaller if compared to 2 of the same carats. Is that why it is not popular?

I bought a pair of BR earrings and a pendant from S**K** recently. Love the way they sparkle. My friend also recently received a BR proposal ring and it sparkles like mad. I don't think that BR looks smaller. Becos of its sparkle it actually looks much brighter and bigger than normal diamonds if the diamond is small and of average colour (F to H). For bigger diamonds, obviously the colour and clarity would play a bigger role on whether the diamond looks big and bright or not.

I am beginning to like the way it sparkles on my finger. My fingers are quite skinny but the bright star actually sparkles so much even though it is only of 0.3 carats. True enough, it does look bigger than normal diamonds of the same carat after much observation. I am glad that I own one, even so when it is given by a loved one.

BR is considered as a fancy cut. A conventional cut diamond is known as a round brilliant, it usually comes with a GIA/HRD/AGS certificate.

I bet your BR dun come with one.

True the BR doesn't have a "pedigree" cert but it comes with its own laser inscription with serial no and a card with matching serial no and the diamond's colour/clarity/carat weight. But whether it's fancy or not, certified or not, isn't the most important thing whether the owner loves it or not? Normally people don't go around asking hey is your diamond certified? Is it so-and-so carat/clarity/cut/colour, etc. They'd be more impressed by the way the diamond shines and sparkles! Besides, the most important C is the cut and BR's cut definitely makes it more brilliant than a conventional diamond even if it's certified. Also BR has a 100% trade in policy that conventional certified diamonds don't have ;) Looking forward to upgrade every 2 yrs!

It does come with a GIA cert if carat weight is more than 0.3 plus a cert on its own if I am not wrong. Does conventional cut diamonds qualify for 100% trade in?

Oh..I didn't know cos I bought the pendant and earrings, not solitaire rings. Should've asked my friend ;) Anyway, re your qn, conventional diamonds always trade in at a percentage of their sale price. I think depends on the diamond's quality, anything from 45% (for uncertified) and up, but never 100% or even close. It's a bit like gold. If you want to sell gold back, they give you market rate eg $30/gramme of 916 gold then discount 18%. At least for gold, the discount is quite consistent and gold prices have been high for a while now. For diamonds, the discounts are really steep, so not worth selling or trading in diamonds. That's why I chose BR for the 100% trade in to upgrade instead. ;)

Hi starcom,

nice to see u here. I got a BR and it comes with a GIA cert on top of the BR cert.

both no.s are inscripted within the diamond itself.

Hi aufeme, i believe most 0.3 comes with a cert. Not sure abt other retailers nut S** k**'s BR comes with 100% trade in if you upgrade within 2 years. HTHs

I love B.R diamonds! They're the best quality and most sparkling diamonds I've seen. I think they're very much worth the high price. I've seen diamonds from Lee Hwa and Goldheart and their diamonds just don't compare with B.R.

Hi dqt...

I've got a pair of wedding band (Inifity) that has 7 small diamonds arnd the ring. S**K** Its beautiful! Usually, depending on a person, some ppl wears their wedding bands only when they are out, otherwise, its in the jewellery box. This is to ensure the shine of the white gold longer.

I tried on a BR solitaire ring which is 0.26carats, and I think it's about $2.4k.

Actually I've been aiming for a BR for the longest time but then the price really is high and I don't want my fiance to spend too much on a ring then not enough to spend on our new flat. And when worn on your finger, how can people tell from far whether it's a BR or Destinee, etc. Actually Soo Kee has another range of solitaires called Staria. My friend bought one for his fiance and it looks good, with $2k, can get a 0.4 carats ring.

Hi Sharon,

my take on solitare is min should go for 0.3 and get certification. To me an engagement/ wedding ring is once is a lifetime. Even though BR has 100% trade in for 2 yrs, i dun think anyone will trade in their wedding ring coz of it's significance.

As you get older, you'll tend to want a bigger solitare to align with age. That i totally agree. I got BR earrings to go with my ring and it's also in the 0.26 range. Feel that it's too small so should be upgrading soon. My mum was scolding me coz she wanted me to get something in the 0.3 range and I argued with her that it looks too big for my tiny ear w//o loop. Serves me right. haha.

There's another range from Soo Kee which is often placed beside BR. Not sure what it's called but my friend has it and it shines a lot too. =p

My FH proposed me with BR... but I know nothing ab it. My FH say the diamond they cut like rose... so it shine like nobody business. Mine is a 0.3+ carat and I got small finger so the diamond fit me just nice. I know even if u wear the BR nobody will know it is, but as long as it was given by ur love one and u urself know it a BR... it doesnt matter whether ppl know. Somemore it a lifetime thing... so must get the best out of his budget and sincerity is more impt too.

I saw a 0.5 carat one at D'Meson and it costs about $1800. It's a " Hearts and Arrows" cut so it's like supposed to shine like crazy too. 0.5 looks okie. Does anyone wear 1 carat or more on a daily basis?? Cos the lady at the shop said that for daily wear, people seldom get more than a carat....

Hi Amber,

Unless u are a rich tai tai who needs to wear big diamonds and socialise a lot, 1 C rings are hardly practical <-- my personal views ba
happy.gif

1. 1 carat rings attracts too many attention. Including robbers
2. It costs a bomb and looks fakish on normal people with normal jobs
3. U tend to scratch many people and surface like work table, tabletops, laptops and the people around you.(Personal experience with my ring now and it's only 0.5)

So that's why the sales person say no point getting a big ring. Not worth the maintainece. Anywae with a ring so big, you would most probably hide it inside the safety deposit box rather to wear out everday.

My advise is not to get such a big size

I did a bit of study on diamonds.

I found this link. It is comprehensive and has got the information most of us want. Then you can actually compare diamond rings from shop to shop and see which one more worthwhile

I kinda like Soo Kee Brilliant rose. I mean the brand. Maybe bcos it's "rose" sounds more ladylike...
happy.gif

But after I see the rings, I dun like the setting of BR i.e how the ring hold the diamond. I find it too much metal surrounding the diamond... Well this is subjective hehe...

Well...sometimes we got to admit that cheaper ring like D'Meyson compare to BR, it's no fight. BR is better. I did went in D'Meyson before...

As long as the owner loves it, it's fine.

Just another comment, the more the number of facets not equal to brillancy. It is the cut and proportion. I can't put the link here has rejected word.

PM me if you need the link

hi all,
i got a gabrielle diamond from Charlotte and alt no of facets do not equal brilliance, more facets if arranged ideally will give much more brilliance (from what i find)

Also, i agree with Ah Jan that 1C rings r abit too big for daily wear.. I originally wanted a 1C.. but i settled for a 0.5..

it's q a comfortable size! have a colleague who wears her 1C everyday and she's q showy about it..

Personally, like Ah Jan mentioned, if i have 1C ring, i'll most prob deposit it in the safe..

i heard this descrip about diamonds and their cuts, which is very easy to understand (for the common folks like me) so thought i'll share it.

"a cut in the diamond is like a mirror in a room. The more cuts, the better the ability to reflect light (hence more sparkly)"

That said, a poorly cut diamond is not good, and different cuts create different sparkles.

NO OFFENSE to anyone who likes fancy cuts (probably everyone here, so SORRY in advance) but generally jeweller's say ideal/ perfect cut is always 57 / 58 cuts and anything above that is a fancy cut. that's why internationally recognised standards is always the ideal/ perfect cut.

i went to see BR, gabrielle diamond, destinee, etc and i told my FH that i prefer the ideal cut. Why? cos generally, the more cuts, the smaller the sparkle and that the small sparkles tend to dance everywhere which is a little un-coordinated to me. the 57/58 perfect cut has bigger sparkles, but lesser sparkles.

go and take a look and do some research. this is very personal opinion! and FYI - fancy cuts ARE more expensive in general..
