Hi, I wld like to find out if anyone has been to Banyan Tree at Bintan. Which villa wld you recommend and also, how's the food there. I understand that food cost is quite pricy and was wondering if there is anyway to budget for it.

Hi,

I've been there sometime last year and stayed for 3 nights at the Seafront Jacuzzi Villa. Honestly I don't think there's a lot of difference between the one room villas (maybe except for Jacuzzi on the rocks). The pool villas on the other hand are BREATHTAKING! They are really beautiful and really worth a stay only that they are really expensive too.

The food is pretty ok, and yes they are very pricey. An average meal with drinks will likely cost you $60 and above. We did travel out for dinner (got to pay cab fare of US$8 for return trip) for all the nights we were there. You can also walk to neighbouring Angsana for meals which are probably just slightly cheaper.

BT is on the whole a beautiful resort, great service and all. Not the cheapest but its romantic and a nice getaway just an hour away. Try it!

Hi Nemo,

We went to BYT Bintan for our ROM honeymoon last year. We stayed in jacuzzi on the rock for 2 nights.

The food are pretty good and servings are generous but expensive. One plate of nasi goreng costs about US$10

You can save on the food by BYO snacks, cup a noodles and sandwiches. But we think since we have spend so much on the villa, it won't help much by saving on meals. Might as well enjoy ourselves to the fullest.

Agree with cala that the service in BYT is excellent..Their staffs will make the effort to remember our names. I think the resort is mainly for people who wants to relax and enjoy being treated like a royal.

Hi Nemo,

I and my hubby brought my parents to BTB last month for 3D2N. We booked two Bayfront Jacuzzi villas (Fascinating holidays had a promo) but when we got there they had given us a free upgrade of one of the villas to Seafront Jacuzzi. As far as I can see there are two main room layouts for the diff jacuzzi villas. I gave my parents the Seafront one but they later said they preferred the layout of mine! Too late!!

The seafront villa has two bathrooms - one has a sunken bath and WC. The other one is a walk-in closet/dressing area with washbasin. Mother complained that cannot wash hands after going to toilet, must come out of one bathroom and rush to the other one! Ha ha!!

Also their bed was right in the middle of the room, raised quite high with a platform running around it (father had prob getting into bed). This is because you get a lovely view overlooking the jacuzzi deck and the sea. The TV was in the corner and angled away from the seating alcove on one side of the room so it's quite difficult to watch TV unless you drag a chair directly in front of it. Their villa was one of those that had the front door situated below the road and & a uneven staircase with no railing leading up to the road. Mother also complained abt that because of her bad knee.

My villa on the other hand was raised above the road level and the stairs was a nice wooden one with railings. The bed was at normal height and headboard against the wall. There was more seating area in front of the TV & also got coffee table. Bathroom was all in one - two washbasins, toilet, sunken bath, wardrobe, safe etc.
We traveled around the resort by buggy most of the time because of my parents but everything is actually within walking distance.

Moral of the story: the villas are truly beautiful and romantic but older folks may have a problem with some of the facilities esp if they have mobility probs. So always inform the staff ahead of time in order to pick out a more convenient villa, e.g. those with doorway at road level etc. And btw, my parents had better room service & experience than we did - prob cos their villa more expensive. The staff came in to light their aromatherapy burner, leave cookies on their bed every night, even gave a good bye gift when we left the resort! We didn't get any of those things, plus our jacuzzi was dirty (slimy) and we had to call for the staff to clean it out before we could use it!

Food - i have absolutely no complaints! My hubby who is such a stickler for good service and good quality food thought their restaurants were great. We tried all three. Prices aren't cheap - they are like mid-priced restaurants in Singapore but have service & quality like the more expensive restaurants. Budget S$30-40 per person. The crossroads restaurant has a buffet breakfast for S$30 and it's expensive cos there is free flow champagne. To save, just eat the alacarte breakfast options, or bring your own stuff and eat in the villa - there is a small fridge you can use to keep butter and jam etc. There's also a kettle and coffee press in the room bar. You can bring your own coffee grounds altho that is also provided free. 4 free bottles of mineral water in each villa. If you order bottled water with your restaurant meal they charge USD$2.50 per bottle.

Service - no complaints about that either. The staff are really very well trained and genuinely friendly, as everyone here has said.

For villa recommendations, I would recommend you go to the Banyan Tree website and look carefully at the floor plans for the different villas. The cheapest villas have no seaview. The bayfront ones are high up on the hill overlooking the sea. Seafront is lower down on the hill & nearer the sea and villa on the rocks is at the lowest level. There is little or no beach at the resort. Most of the villas are high up on the hill and no easy path to the sea - which anyway is full of rocks on the shore, not sand. So don't expect it to be a beach holiday. It's a spa resort!

I also have some personal photos taken inside the villas - if you want to see how they look like inside, you can email me at [email protected] and I can send u the link.

Wow Grace, thanks for the detail description.. I managed to book the bayfront jacuzzi villa during the NATAS fair as they have run out of the rest.. Hope it is good cos it is supposed to be our mini honeymoon until the big one...

Guess I will bring simple snacks for b/f and lunch then eat for dinner there.

Elise, where can you go for dinner out of the resort? Is it some kelong type of seafood.. also is it cheap / reasonable?

Hi Nemo,

the last time I was there, we had most of our meals in Banyan. Reason being it's pretty far away from town and other places. There's a free shuttle to Angsana and Nirwana though, so you could eat there too if you want a change of environment.

If you want cheaper seafood, you have to take a cab out... hope it helps!

Hi Nemo,

We went out to both the Seafood Kelong restaurant and this lovely Thai restaurant near Nirwana Gardens called Baan Aryad. The latter comes highly recommended, lovely ambience, seaside location & pretty good food. Prices are not that cheap (S$40++ for a set dinner) but its worth a try. The Seafood restaurant is pretty good, prices are ok (not very cheap).

I don't think there's a free shuttle to Nirwana though, you have to get a cab to get to Baan Aryad.

Actually though Banyan Tree itself does not have much of a beach, it actually "shares" a beach with Angsana resort. You just have to take a buggy to the pool closer to Angsana and walk over to the beach. Its quite a decent beach, not so rocky.

If you dine at Treetops, will recommend the nasi goreng. Its yummy! Don't take the nasi lemak cos you get a lot less condiments for the same price. And try their soup kambing (oxtail soup) too.

When you are at BT, you can also ask for a tour of the premises. Ask them to show you their nicest villa, and you will be blown away by just how awesome & beautiful it is. As for the turn down service Grace was saying her parents had, I think its available to all guests. Just request that they turn down the room for you before you have your dinner (and make sure u don't hang a do not disturb sign outside your villa).

i remember when i went there a few years back. at night time, me and husband had to "strand" ourselves in the bed covered with mosquito net cos there is quite a no. of mosquito flying around.

Overall, it is really quite worth the money to go there for relax. when i come to think of it, i think i missed their mee-goreng.....yummy

Oh, must comment that they provide mosquito repellant lotion, mosquito coil, insect spray, incense sticks and aromatherapy burner in every villa. So you don't really need to bring those things although you might want to buy the "Off" repellant from Guardian. I went in Feb and did not notice any mosquitos so in the end didn't need repellant. DOn't know if it depends where your villa is situated!? Maybe those in the valley are more prone to bugs...

As regards the turn-down service, we did request for it a couple of times on our 2nd day there. We called them quite early in the morning to say we'll be going out and they could come and clean, but after lunch we got back and nothing was done except the jacuzzi was cleaned up. We called again and said we were going to be out for dinner for a few hours from about 7pm - when we came back 10 pm they still hadn't come so we put out the privacy sign.

Next morning, when we were going out for breakky at about 9 am we found a note in the door saying they came to clean but our privacy sign was on the door (they must have arrive past 10pm or before 9am!!??) So that's why we didn't get our turn-down service altho my mom said they tidied up hers twice that day. But otherwise we have no complaint.

Went Banyan Tree last Nov ...

Feel in love with that place that hubby and I decided that we are going to spend our anniversarys in Banyan Tree.

The level of service is good .. even though food is pricey there .. but we have no complains. We stayed at the Seaview Jacuzzi Villa (3D2N). When we check in there, they gave complimentary spa for two. We have the Thai BBQ in the villa which costs about US$45/person. Although its expensive, the portion is really huge and the food is fresh and delicious.

As for the beach, its so-so only. For first night we hired a cab to take us to the Kelong Seafood. The restaurant prices are all in SING$ and its pretty much like what u get in Singapore. Second day we went to Pasar Oleh Oleh for lunch .. but in my opinion, you can skip that place!

I would definitely recommend you to go to Banyan Tree.

Hi Squidhead,

Wow, they threw in a complimentary spa for 2? How did u get that? Or did they just offer it to you?

I didn't want to go for the in villa BBQ cos I wasn't comfortable with the idea of eating at the patio at night, cos we spotted quite alot of insects running around the patio at night. So yours was okay?

Hi elsie,

for the complimentary spa .. they just offered it to us.

We were very surprised because when we booked thru the agency we knew that spa is not included. But i know from the BT website, they have a package where if u book 2 nights u will get complimentary spa. So maybe the staff at BT assumed we booked directly from BT.

So were very lucky. Good experience at the spa .. first time.

There were no insects when we had our BBQ. They do not have a light at the patio, so it can be quite dark. When we told the staff it was too dark ... they put tealight candles all around ... not very bright but it created a very romantic atmosphere.

The Thai food near Nirwana Gardens was good? Next time must try ... The next round when we go we will try the Seafront Villa. The staff showed us the Jacuzzi on the Rocks villa, some how both my husband and I found that the layout is not very cosy.

Oh, wow. Good for you!

Yes, the Thai food was good, and the place very romantic. Felt that the ambience was better than the restaurant at Banyan cos you are closer to the sea. Your in villa bbq sounds really romantic!

I stayed at the Seafront Villa, different layout from the Seaview Villa. Other than that, may not be so different.

Anyone stayed at the Banyan Tree Valley Jacuzzi villa before? Thinking of staying 3d2n at the Valley Jacuzzi villa but am worried about the mosquitoes since we will be in the 'valley' so called. Last year i stayed at the Seaview jacuzzi villa, didn't have a problem with mosquitoes. Was wondering if there is a mozzie problem for the Valley Jacuzzi villa?

Hi

Can i know wat currency should i change - US$ or Indonesian RP if i am going to Banyan Tree Bintan? I read the earlier thread and was a bit confused. What do we use to pay at the shops and restaurant? I have credit card but I think it might be cheaper if I used cash.

Also, i heard that we can book a limo and then go to the shopping area... how long do we need to spend if we are going to the shopping area? Will there have cheaper food for lunch at the shopping area? Is it worth to go to the shopping area?

Nutty - Hi, I heard that we can go to kelong to have our meals that's cheaper.. is it very far from the resort? How much does it cost to take the ferry to the kelong? Wat food do we eat at the kelong? Approximate how much? Coz i am on budget... so if going to kelong for lunch is cheaper, then i will want to go coz i never mind to kelong too...

Tks so much!

Best Regards

hi forest,

Banyan Tree only accept US$ Whenever I use my credit card to sign, they will convert to RP first then convert to S$. I think if you want to use RP to pay also can but they will do the conversion for you. Sorry cant really remember, I went there about 1.5 yrs ago.

You can book a car but they will charge you US$8 (I think) (for 2 trips). They will drive you to the place, then you have to tell them what time to come back to pick u up.

As for the shopping area, there is not much shopping to do there. You can finish walking that place in 30mins. Nothing much to buy, basically there is a supermarket, some tourist shops and a few restaurants. The food there will be cheaper but don't forget to add in the US$10 for transport.

As for the kelong, you also need to have transport because you cannot walk there. You do not need to take any ferry to the kelong. Its on the same island as Banyan Tree. The food there is seafood just like our East Coast Seafood. In fact the prices there are pretty much the same as in Singapore. The kelong accepts S$.

Hi Squidhead

Tks for ur feedback... but still dun noe wat currency should i change to bring it there better? Wat currency would it be bettter to bring there to spend - US$ or RP? So that i can change the correct currency now and then go there and spend.

Seems like the shopping area i might skip as u say nothing much. For the kelong, i m quite interested to go when i touched down there coz it will be early in the morning so thought of going there for lunch and then check in banyan tree at 3pm... so how much is the transport to go kelong? So a 'normal' not very good lunch.. won't cost alot, rite? U mean something like the price of east coast seafood? tks so much...

Hi forest,

I only brought RP for my trip to Banyan Tree. In fact, most of time was spent in Banyan Tree so I usually pay with my credit card.

As for the transport to kelong .. if you are taking it from Banyan Tree it will cost u US$8 as mentioned. BT charges a flat rate for the transportation so regardless where u want to go (whether its a 5min drive or 30mins drive), it will cost u US$8.

The food at kelong to me is just like what you will get at East Coast. It's worth trying because the restaurant is really a kelong. As for costing alot, it all depends on what u eat right?

I will suggest you trying checking in earlier. Even though the check in time at BT is 3pm but when i arrived there it was about 2pm and they allowed me to check in already. Really regretting not going there earlier. But then again, it all depends if they have the Villa available or not.

Hi Squidhead

Tks for your info. I think maybe i changed US$ and spend there lah..heard all prices at US$. For the transport of US$8 - is it a 2way (to and fro kelong)? I reached abt 10am.. check in at 3pm.. so maybe go kelong for lunch..since so much time...can we place our things at the reception and then come back at 3pm to check in? thought of going to the beach or stroll around..until 3pm... if not like nothing to do like that...wat else to do other than going to kelong? will ask for early check in if possible..tks so much!

Best regards

I will be giong to Banyan Tree Bintan next week. Need to ask those who have been there before if there are any internal shuttle bus to transport us to ...say the Thai Food restaurant in Nirwana area? How is the transport like?

I have been to Nirwana before and found the restaurants around there nice and of reasonable price.... so would like to go back there again and wonder if that is possible?
