hi maddcow!!! yeah, the chinatowns here are not bad. i found one hong kong dressmaker in SF chinatown that would do the full custom made deal and they even stocked a wide range of textiles, for only US$280 incl all alterations till it fits. you could prolly use that as a good gauge of what to expect in NYC, maybe slightly more for cost of living adjustment (haha, sorry i've been too engrossed in the job search).... anyways, good luck!
hmm, last rejoinder about shanghai tang... i personally think they're overpriced and their stuff isn't really nicer than most, it's just packaged nicely. shopping for everyday wear is one thing, but they don't have a big range of evening type gowns... i checked them out in singapore, and vaguely remember the hong kong store as well... honestly i think only the hong kong or shanghai stores (which had the full "imperial" tailoring services) are worth the money. dunno if the NY store has this service, but good to keep in mind as well!
