Need suggestion for Honeymoon at Alsaka.
Cold country, can have more chances to hug together. Moreover, due to global warming glaciers can be veri magnificent sight.

hi Adel, me and fh just came back from Alaska cruise in May. it was great fun and sight!
yes, very cold. need to bring more thermal jackets. and also some lovely gowns to attend the formal fine dining dinners..
if u have the budget, can take a ocean view room. Am sure it'll be more romantic. we took a inside state room, so had to go to deck most of time to view scenary.

WOW!!!
It'll be a memorable honeymoon. Which part of Alaska the cruise docked? Did you go on a F&E and book the cruise there? How much is your total package?

don't think a cruise can be considered F&E can it??? i went to alaska a few years back, really beautiful place, but be mindful, only go there during the spring and summer months as winter time, most of the national parks are closed.
if you really want a F&E, it will save you lot of money, i rented a car for two weeks and stayed in B&Bs all over alaska, they're really cheap and really comfy and the big plus is that the owners are always so willing to recommend you excellent places to go. just do a search over the internet for B&Bs in alaska, a lot of these guys have websites up and you can do reservations via email

bed and breakfast...basically it's someone's house but they've converted some of the rooms into motel/hotel standard and comes with breakfast in the morning

Hmm... That's an interesting. Will consider the cruise as well as B&B. Thanks.

Do you have any info or details for the cruise and B&B? Can share?

hi adel, I just came back 4 hours ago from an Alaska cruise. Yes, it's my honeymoon trip. We were with Celebrity Cruise Liner. The cruise is simply well worth the $$ tho it is not cheap. Including our extension at YVR & all the various shore excursions & land tours => almost S$13k! Very different from Star Cruises (I've sailed with a few Star Cruise ships for about 10x liao - coz I simply love cruises).

We fly into Anchorage by China Airlines, then took a transfer to Seward to board Celebrity Summit & sail southwards to Vancouver for a 7-night cruise. Afterwhich we extended another 7 days in Vancouver where we also sign up a land tour to the Canadian Rockies.

Think this season is ending soon in mid Sept. Afterwhich you'll have to wait till next year as the Alaska cruise season is from late May - mid Sep. We waited for the season to come tho we had our wedding in Jan'05. Mid Jul till end Aug is the best time to visit coz weather will be cooling (not too cold), can see wildlife at sea (whales, harbour seals, etc - coz that's where they have already migrated to Alaska). That's why it is the most expensive, regardless of which cruise liner you take. We saw Holland America ship, Princess ship, another Celebrity ship & Royal Carribean ship when we were at various ports-of-call. Initially we wanted to take advantage of the cheaper rates to sail late May or Jun but after evaluating all the advice, we think it is worth to pay more (about S$1k/pax) in order to go at the best time since most likely we won't be going back again this lifetime.

If you need more info, I think I can help since it is still very fresh in mind. [email protected]

hi ggjj, you are right. Good choice to choose Celebrity. When we were evaluating which cruise liner, so many names popped out. Chan Bros doing Holland America & Carnival, SA (UIC) doing Princess & Royal Caribbean, Dynasty doing Celebrity & Royal Caribbean. Each cruise liner is different & has a different target market. Carnival is meant for young active adults (20s), Holland America is more expensive meant for retirees (60s & 70s), Royal Caribbean & Princess meant for all ages (young & old), Celebrity meant for retirees also. We chose Celebrity coz we want a slower pace of life on the ship, no one to disturb us or entice us with lots of activities so that we have more time to cuddle.
kao_wink.gif
Don't want to see too many kids also coz very noisy. Then was told that Holland America is more formal whereas Celebrity is slowly moving towards more informal, hence formal nights only limit to 2 out of the 7. We didn't regret our choice.

Think you can login to www.celebrity.com for more details on the shore excursions. That's how we got the info. We spent about US$1k on shore excursions. As for the gratuities, the recommended is US$10.50/night/pax for Alaska cruises. I'm not sure about Caribbean cruises. U can also go into the website for details. In fact their website is very informative. We didn't spend much on drinks coz my hubby don't drink. So we spend more on souvenirs on board (they have lots of offers), laundry for our gowns & suits & workout (gym & pool) wear, we also gave extra gratuities to the stateroom attendent coz he & his asst's service is really fantastic, very attentive & prompt. So think we spent about US$1.3k on board? That's excl $$ spent on land during port-of-calls.

So which ship will you be sailing with? How many nights? Gonna extend at Florida after this? How much are you intending to spend for this trip? Now I'm planning on the next cruise trip.

Hi ggjj, wow! your budget almost the same as mine. So which airline r u flying with? I didn't take their spa or facial coz very expensive. Didn't bring those brochures back but think it's about US$75 - US$200 per session.

Hey adel, reply you liao!

Oct/Nov getting too cold liao. Even cruises won't sail during that time. The last sailing is normally mid Sep. The best time to go Alaska is late May - mid Sep. Unless u wanna catch the 'northern lights' which normally happens in Oct.

Thanks, NiuNiu.

That's my main intention of visiting Alaska.
But understanding from travel guide that northern light is best view during Mar in Alaska. Hence, I have a bit of hesitation on going in Oct.

I was advised that the best time to view Northern Lights is the start of autumn or start of spring where there is a change of the weather from hot to cold or vice versa. That's where due to difference of hot & cold charge particles meet, Northern Lights might be sighted. It can be sighted in scandinavian countries also.

Think it's Oct. Was told the most frequent sightings are in late Oct/early Nov. Maybe u can plan the trip around this time if u are planning to catch the Northern Lights.

Poisedon Gal,

If you want to see the northern lights, you will have to book the Alaska Inland tours from overseas tour agencies. There are no tour agancies in Singapore currently offering Alaska Inland Tours.

You can try Cosmos or Globus tours as they have quite a good selection of Alaska Tours. To see the Northern Lights you will have to go to Alaska in March to July.

Two areas where you have the highest chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Alaska are Fairbanks and Denali. However, do note that the Northern Lights can only be seen very late at night or very early in the morning.

Hi tiramisu,

I stayed in Hyatt using my hyatt points.
It was quite convenient since it is located next to the train station. Not far from the fruise ship to.. I think we took a cab less than 10CAD.
But our ship was not from the Cabadian place, cant remember the name.

I would love to go to Alaska, but there's no way my fiance would go for it. Not even a chance. 70 is cold for him. >_< Pansy. ;)

I figure I have 20 years or so to work on him for my dream vacation to Antarctica...he has known for ages that this is the one place I want to go before I die, so I think he's resigned himself to the notion hehe.

I have taken 1 HAL cruise-never again! The reasons were I felt HAL was more serious and less fun/laughter generally. Elderly passengers who were not fond of children so I did 1 ship tour, then took independent tours to avoid the stares and glares upon boarding the tour bus. 2 free restaurants and dressing each night for the dining room as we were bored of the buffet for 18 breakfast/lunches became an effort. The shows in the theatre were average with a large number of dance/singing which lacked variety (and fun/laughter). CAsino was dead. No fridge in the cabin! Rude/disinterested photo staff (who ignore us on Komodo Island as we were not on a HAL tour). Ship carpet was not clean/musty/dusty smell
