Hi all,
For those who are interested in Mitsubishi Starmex System 4 MUX-26TV, you can try Hong Liang at Alexander Village. Their quote is the cheapest so far, about $2600. Includes installation, warranty (dunno how many years). They uses the black color insulator (Armaflex).

To all,
basically i have a very interesting qn for u all?
who do u think is better in terms of price?
private contractor or retail shop?
who do u think will provide better after sales?
private contractor or retail shop?

For myself? i always prefer to buy from retail shop! caused at least i feel the only time i will lose my warranty is when the shop closed down and not my contractor changing his hp or gone back to malaysia.

Hi Calix,
Reasons for not getting Inverter is :
1) Prefer to save money in the beginning. Savings for Inverter can only be seen after a few years.
2) We dun turn use the air-con dat often. Basically only turn on when we're sleeping.

Just to share my point. Any violent objections?

Hello Mageous,

I find that their sales service (C00lServe) is responsive. I emailed them several questions and they were very prompt in their reply. Personally, i think they're quite competitive.

Hi All,

I got my aircon from A-Star @IMM
Mitsubishi Electric
MUX-20TV / MS-A10VD x 3
9,000 Btu/hr + 6,000 Btu/hr x 2

ours came with a price guarantee, before installation if we can find the same model at a cheaper price they will either match or refund us the deposit.

it comes with no piping limitation, premium insulation, extended installation warranty of 3yrs, 2 times installation, $120 svc voucher which is transferable.

i have all of the above written down on the sales confirmation order.

i just paid a deposit of $200.

Thanks edGin.
Another question. Normally Aircon company list down on their site the dealer who is carrying their product, it is safe to purchase the aircon from vendors that are not listed as their dealer?

Hello Mageous,

There are many aircon contractors who are not a direct dealer from the aircon company. For me, it matters most is who will do the installation and the contractor must demonstrate that they are capable.

The installation must be properly done as it affects the performance of the aircon system.

Good question. It is indeed difficult for us to conclude. Anyhow, that's why we're in the forum to help each other to figure it out.

Hi,
For the last 4 years, I have sign air-con servicing contracts with CoolS*rve (replace * with e) and I must say I am very PLEASED with their service. First the receptionist is very friendly and willing to listen to the problem of your air-con and do not mind helping you to arrange a most convenient time for their servicemen to do the cleaning. Their servicemen also very professional. Sometimes they are late (due to previous appointment takes longer time to do or whatever), they will call you to inform you that they will be late. From the way u see how they clean the air-con, etc, they really make sure they minimise the "dirt" left in your house :D , the only thing u need to provide for them is some old newspaper :D. And the "machine" they use to wash the air-con also pretty high tech :D.
The contract I sign with them is $100 for 1 aircon unit (since I have 3 units, it will be $300). They will come 4 times per year. And if they found out that your air-com needs chemical washing, it is TOTALLY FREE (but for chemical washing they will arrange another date to wash it, since they normally do not tag their chemical washing machine everywhere they goes... and also chemical washing last for 2 hours). And during these 4 years, all 3 of my aircon unit already had chemical wash once each, so you can see how much I have save :D
I will be renovating my new house soon and I will for sure get them to install the aircon for me.

Tobasco, most probably in the next 2 or 3 weeks time. They will be coming down twice, once for the wirings, and another for installing the blowers after my paintings are done.

hi all,

when u request for the air-con guys to come for 2 installations what & when do they do the two installations?

i had got the air-con on my own instead of getting it from my ID. I asked my ID when I should get the a/c guys to come down for trunking. & he told me to get them down yest. I called & arranged with them. i specifically told my ID i got 2 time installation. once for trunking & then the a/c units to be brought. he even can tell "wah, so good huh"

when the a/c guy came down my ID & the a/c guy started talking in Hokkien. my tiles were not up yet & my ID didn't want to give approximate allowance for the skirting in case the gap is too big.
i really didn't know why my ID ask them to come then!!! the a/c guy left after marking on the walls.

then today my ID tells me that in their conversation in Hokkien the a/c guy did not want to put up the trunking on the top part of the wall & install the fan coil units first. & then later come back to finish up once the tiling is done.

my original intention was that the trunking be done first & then the aircon units be installed once my ID handover to me. to prevent theft & usage. that was what the a/c guy was there for too. to lay trunking. i thot that was the norm. & my ID says that's not the case!
now my ID says he will lay tiles, paint, then just b4 handover get the a/c up (in one trip) & touch up.

now my first trip by the a/c guy is wasted. i'm VERY upset with my ID on this matter. i can't even voice it out cos' its only one week since he started reno, got a long way to go.
if i want to get the a/c units in on the 3rd trip, i have to pay extra $80.

can anyone advise on when is the best time to do the a/c installation in one trip. my tiles are gonna be laid tmr.

Hi Josnah,
hai, dun care, it is yr ID's fault since he is the one who asked you to called the a/c guy to come. Must voice out to him and let him know or else it is unfair to u.

for me, the followings steps are done before the installation of aircon:
1) Tiles up for whole house
2) Leave few days for the skiing or tiles to dry
3) Proceed to install air-con + trunking(only 1 trip)
4) Paint job
5) Acid wash tile

that's what my contractor suggested.

hi afcai,

thks for the reply. makes me feel better already.

how do u make sure that others dun use the a/c? i dun want to sound so petty, but i dun want others to use the a/c. the a/c at my current place can be operated w/o remote.

also worried abt theft. my house is locked with a combination lock. i really dunno how many pple know the combi.

we have gotten our aircon guys seperate as well.

Our designer recommanded to install trunking after tiling but the blower need only be install after painting. so 2 trips. Will be neater that way.

Something to share:-

here's an extract from another forum

"Most people shun off inverter aircon because of the high initial cost but never think of the benefits. Most inverter aircon saves u loads of electricity, tested and proven. You would get back ur initial cost by say 2 years? or less? Inverter aircon is much more comfortable. Anyone has experience sleeping with aircon n always remove blanket cause too hot then put blanket again cause too cold. You won't have such problem with inverter aircons. I've got the following points to add.

1. Don't compare brands because of price.
Example: Brand X might offer you system 3 at $2000 and Brand Y offer you system 3 at $1000. Don't jump in and get Brand Y straight, check the specs. What's the cooling capacity of the individual fancoil that both brand offers. What's the capacity of the condensing unit. Brand X might be able to cool all 3 rooms when turned on where as Brand Y could only manage 2.

2. Don't compare companys because of price.
Almost like the above. Company X and Company Y both sells Brand X system 3. Company X quotes u $1000 where Company Y quotes you $1500. Ask for the specs. Company X might give u same brand but a low capacity CU or fancoil.

3. After sales service.
There's many china brands out there which is cheap and looks good but if they break down, are you assure that those contractors outside knows how to fix them? Spare parts are they avaiable? Go for well establisb brands which are known for their after sales service.

4. Installation.
Like someone mentioned, installation is very very important for an aircon system. No matter how good the aircon system is how expensive it is, if the installation sucks. Thats if for you. If you buy a particular brand, find their authorised dealer.

Lastly, ask urself what's the usage of your aircon. Only 1 room always on at nite? or all 3 run at nite? Or all 3 on 24hrs? All these makes a huge difference. Get a good dealer to recommend. They should do the job. Inverter is what i would recommend for sure. =)

Just my 5 cents worth.
*Note i'm not here to sell or promote and brands/company. No brand nor company name is mentioned. I've enough of people framing me when i'm just trying to help. "

"If there's only 1 of the 3 rooms that is on always. Inverter is obviously the choice. Why? Non inverter basically is stupid LOL. Only know 2 things. On and Off. So the compressor keeps on cutting in when the temperature is not cool enough. Inverter has a circuit board inside that is SMART! =) For a start it doesn't cuts in just like that, it gradually cuts in thus the power consumption is low n once it reaches the required temperature it doesn't shut down, it goes down to a constant and operates. The cutting in and out kills the compressor. Trying playing with ur room switch on and off always. =P Just an example for you. Lets call it Brand Z.

Lets assume you are using a non inverter system 3. Operating the aircon in 1 room would take 1490watts per hour. Operatiing 2 room would be 1520watts. Operating 3 would use 1600watts.
Now for the inverter one.
Running in 1 room would take 780watts(400-1050) . 2 would be 1550watts(460-2220) whereas 3 would be 1660watts(510-2100).Notice there's a ( )? Eg. Room 1. 780watts(400-1050) means. The average power consumption is 780watts. When the compressor cuts in it starts at 400watts, the highest it goes would be 1050watts. Once it hits the required temperature it goes down n uses about 780 watts constantly. Thats the magic of inverter. See the difference between them? Lets say u uses a non inverter n on 1 room for 8 hours a day? 1490 x 8 x 28days = 333.76kW per month. Which is rougly $53 per month just for the room. Inverter would be 780(just take the constant) x 8 x 28days = 174.72kW per month, which would be $28. That's a huge difference from my point of view.

Hope my example ain't that confusing. =p The power consumption i gave above is quite close to the actual spec of a certain brand. I didn't make them up. =) Just trying to give an example. It applies to every brand of inverter aircons. So its your pick. "

Note again, the above are extracts from another forum

hi meow,

thks for your post. so its just not me assuming that's how it can be done.

this is what my iD recommends now.
1) Tiles up for whole house
2) Paint Job
3) Acid Wash
4) Install air-con + trunking(only 1 trip)
5) Touch up paint job
6) Acid Wash again

he is now claiming to be the one going thru all the trouble, protect my tiling etc.

my iD tells me he doesn't want to explain so much to home owners so as not to confuse them. i'm really controlling myself from telling him off that its his job to explain to me until i'm clear abt it!

his workmanship & quality of work is good. which is why he dun want to give approx allowance for the skirting. but he insists on installing the a/c his way cos' that's how his a/c guys work!

i am gonna go down & talk to him in person tmr & agree on the way the a/c is installed.

Hi

I did not get my aircon from my ID too.

Just to share my experience (still in progress)
1)Floor tiles done up for living room.
2)Install aircon trunking first (1st trip).
3)Lay laminate flooring for the bedrooms.
3)Paint job for the whole house.
4)Install blower units (2nd trip).
5)Test aircon for 24/48 hrs (no workers are allowed in the flat).
6)Once satisfied that there's no leakage or any other problems, ID will resume work.

Some parts of the trunkings are covered up by wardrobe and platform bed so need to test the trunking first before the carpentry work starts.

Hi Ali G,

Can i ask why you did not get the air con from your ID? I would like to find out whatz the diff. Are there some cons if i ask my ID to quote for the air con?

keepitreal

New Member
Hi Mandy,

I didn't get from my ID cos I can get cheaper quote outside. Dat's the pro.

Con would be u need to do some coordination work between ur ID and the aircon men. If you get aircon from ur ID, then ur ID will do everything for you.

The difference in price is abt $300 and we dun mind doing the coordination work, so why not get the aircon ourselves?

Hi Ali,

i see. cos we just ask our ID for the air con quotation. what he found was $28 more expensive than the one we find ourselves outside. the price he got for us has included everything. So i guess $28 more is still ok right?

keepitreal

New Member
Hi Mandy,

The time taken for coordinating is definitely worth more than $28. For your case, it would be wise to let ur ID settle everything then. Also, the assurance is there...

Hi folks,

Here is some update:
Aircon has been installed with satisfaction. As I request to do some "leak" test, there are some trunking that were not covered up (upon my request). After testing for 24hr and confirm that there is no "sweating" (as said by my ID), I covered back the trunking and did the sealage of the wall myself (told the air-con men to leave some "white powder" for me). Another plus point is that these ppl are on the dot and they will call abt 15 mins before to inform you that they are coming.

A very satisfied customer...Keep It Real!!!

hi AliG,

how much did u pay for your mit sys4? is it the inverter type? how much years warranty? dunno whether it's worth paying for the inverter ones if we're only using it at night....

Hi Snowpod,

Mine is Mits Sys 4 non-inverter type, $2300, warranty is given by Mits itself (forgot how many years). I'm using at nite only as well, thus non-inverter. Besides, out of the 4 units, we'll be using only 2 most of the time (master bedroom and study)

Anyone knows the price of the Toshiba Sys 3 Inverter Aircon?

Looking at buying from AllBest (IMM).. But he says he is not allowed to reveal the price of the Toshiba units over the phone... He has told me the prices for Mitshubishi and Daikin.. But I'm interested in Toshiba..

Anyone has problem with Toshiba or AllBest?

hi pink_ice vacuum process is done b4 u connect up to the compressor to ensure there is no dirt or water vapour inside as connecting up with dirt and vapour inside will tends to shorten your compressor's lifespan :p

Hi all,

My wife and I settled on Toshiba's Invertor Sys 3 from A-Star. AllBest gave good price, but after going a few rounds, I discovered that all about the same actually... Only thing is that Allbest and A-Star provides 5 years workmanship warranty. Some others only provides 1 to 3 years..

The reason they provide so many years of warranty is attributed to the fact that they are using an insulation material branded TotaLine. which is supposed to have a longer lifespan. Meaning it doesn't crack after 2 - 3 years...

Well, just shop around and ask around for prices and dun forget specs... we got the Toshiba at $2399 for 13kBTU+13kBTU+10kBTU (failcoil) and 24kBTU (compressor) from A-Star because the salesperson Andy Lim seemed most knowledgeable on the technical aspects of aircons.
