Is there a market rate for the price to give the bride's family and how much to return to the groom's family? Is this usually exchanged during the 过大礼?

I don’t think there is any market rate and yes, it’s usually exchange sure the 过大礼. It’s all base on groom’s side and his Budget etc. On how much to return to the groom side will base on your parents. E.g: groom give $2888, bride side keep $2000 and return $888.
Hope this helps! :)

All these will be discussed beforehand? So if the groom gives $2,888, does the bride needs to prepare $888 separately, or "open the Ang pow and split" on the spot?

As for the amount, it’s not a must to be discussed before hand.
You don’t have to prepare the return Ang pow before hand. Usually after the groom pass the Ang pow to the bride’s parents, they will go into the room or somewhere to open it and discuss how much to return. And after discussion, will put the return amount back in the Ang pow and return back to the groom.

The price to give bride's family is called Pin Jin :).
There's no Market rate but its good for bride to discuss with her mum (and try to help out the groom *wink*). Both groom and you should know the budget and help out each other.

Typically, its either pin jin, or pin jin + wedding tables.
The pin jin is given to bride family during guo da li.

Usually the bride's parents will use the pin jin to buy the return gifts and also the rings/ necklace gifts to gift to the couple during Tea ceremony on actual day too :)

Oh yes- there's another price called "wash diaper money" that will be given when fetching the bride. It usually a token amount like 288 or 388.

Thanks eang18 for sharing. The "wash diaper money" is from whom to who?

Hi Spamfries, the diaper money is from Groom to your parents, given on the actual day (usually with 8 oranges) upon entering your place after gatecrashing :)

For this procedure, your parents don’t have to return back.
