L<\/b>eaving St. Moritz<\/a> felt like waking up from a particularly good dream. Three nights at the Waldhaus<\/a>, the snow, the silence \u2014 and then, suddenly, we were back at the train station with our bags, ready for the second act. Which, as it turned out, was worth every bit of anticipation.<\/p>

Z\u00fcrich is not what you expect when you’ve just come from the Alps. Switzerland’s largest city sits on the banks of the Limmat River with the quiet confidence of a place that has never needed to prove itself: medieval cathedral towers alongside contemporary art galleries, chocolate factories next to Michelin-starred restaurants, cobblestoned alleys that open unexpectedly onto a very modern square. For honeymooners who want their Switzerland trip to contain multitudes, the St. Moritz-to-Z\u00fcrich pairing is, frankly, ideal.But first: the journey itself.<\/p>

We’d been told the train journey from St. Moritz to Z\u00fcrich was something special. We’d nodded politely. We had no idea.<\/p>\"\"Leaving St. Moritz Station<\/i>\"\"\"\"\"Alpine

The Alpine Classic Pullman carriage, charterable as an add-on to scheduled Bernina Express services, is a vintage art deco railway car from the early 20th century: roomy armchairs, teak fittings, bay windows that frame the landscape like a moving exhibition. The Bernina Express route crosses the Rhaetian Railway and the Landwasser Viaduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the engineering alone is worth paying attention to. Snow-capped peaks, mountain villages, glacial lakes \u2014 every curve of the track delivers something new. Being a part of this fascinating piece of railway history and masterful engineering was a check on the bucket list for me.<\/p>

Arriving at Z\u00fcrich, we were taken to The Dolder Grand, which sits on top a hill overlooking Lake Z\u00fcrich and which manages to feel simultaneously like a grand historic institution and a thoroughly contemporary luxury property. The palatial exterior, with its Belle \u00c9poque fa\u00e7ade, showcases intricate detailing and stately columns that beckon guests to step inside. The interior is no less impressive, featuring opulent d\u00e9cor, marble floors, and elegant furnishings that exude a sense of refined grandeur. The rooms and suites are beautifully considered \u2014 fine linen, carefully chosen art, the kind of amenities that make you slow down and actually use things. Z\u00fcrich City Tour<\/b><\/b><\/p>

The next day, we set out to tour Z\u00fcrich\u2019s old town, but before that we needed to get one thing out of our systems: Chocolate. <\/p>

The Lindt Home of Chocolate in nearby Kilchberg is a proper destination \u2014 not a gift shop with a caf\u00e9 attached. Stepping inside the building, we were transported into a chocolate lover’s paradise\u2014a captivating fusion of history, innovation, and delectable creations. The Chocolate Heaven exhibit beckoned us to delve into the roots of Swiss chocolate craftsmanship. Vintage cocoa grinders, antique moulds, and cocoa tales from centuries past came alive, narrating the rich heritage that laid the foundation for Lindt’s unparalleled mastery. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the Chocolate Tasting Room\u2014a haven where we indulged in a symphony of flavours and textures. You get to taste cocoa from various origins and savour the subtle notes that differentiate each creation, as well as follow every step of the process that transforms the beans into cocoa liquor, then into liquid chocolate, and finally into perfect bars and pralines. We left the chocolate shop with bags full of chocolate with this newfound appreciation for the chocolate bar.<\/p>

If you have more time to spare, you can unleash your inner chocolatier in the Chocolateria. Under the watchful eye of master chocolatiers, you can craft truffles and pralines and adorn molten chocolate with your unique touches at the workshops.<\/p>

Right across the road from Lindt Home of Chocolate, we were able to take the public bus to Stadthausenlage, a large square with a giant Ferris Wheel. From here we started our walking tour of the old town.<\/p>\"\"

Nearby, the Fraum\u00fcnster Church, with its elegant blue spire, houses a remarkable collection of Chagall windows, infusing the space with ethereal light and vibrant colours. These architectural marvels are touchstones of Z\u00fcrich’s historical identity, offering glimpses into its artistic and religious legacies. As you wander, you’ll encounter hidden courtyards, charming boutiques, and traditional Swiss eateries serving up delectable delights. While many of Z\u00fcrich’s guild houses retain their original functions, some have been adapted for modern use while preserving their historical character. The Zunfthaus zur Waag, once the home of a linen weaver\u2019s guild, is now the place for culinary delights in its elegant dining room . It stands directly facing the Fraum\u00fcnster, which attracts tourists and locals alike with its breathtaking Chagall windows. In 2008, the M\u00fcnsterhof, on which the guild house sits, was redesigned. In the process, a fountain was once again integrated into the design of the historically significant square. In addition to the large fountain bowl, the possibility of wine supply was incorporated for the small drinking fountain, so that the fountain can be used by the guild innkeeper of the Waag as a wine dispenser. This has proven to be a popular activity for wedding events held at the guild house terrace during the summer months! <\/p>
