Somewhere between family expectations, wedding traditions and picture-perfect celebrations on social media, it’s easy to lose sight of what you actually want for your big day.<\/i><\/p>

T<\/b>here seems to be an unspoken checklist that comes with getting married in Singapore. First, there’s the romantic proposal, followed by the pre-wedding photoshoot, bridal party, gatecrash, tea ceremony, wedding banquet, outfit changes and beautifully styled venue. Somewhere along the way, you might also find yourself considering a second march-in, a champagne tower and wedding favours that your guests will hopefully remember to bring home.<\/p>

None of these things is inherently unnecessary or excessive. Many are beautiful traditions or meaningful experiences. But here’s something worth asking yourself: How many of these things do you genuinely want, and how many have made it onto your wedding checklist simply because you’ve come to believe they’re part of getting married?<\/p>

There’s a particular kind of pressure that comes with planning a wedding today, and it doesn’t always come from demanding parents or opinionated relatives. Sometimes, it’s scrolling through Instagram and wondering whether your d\u00e9cor is impressive enough, attending a friend’s beautiful banquet and feeling that your own celebration needs something more, or assuming certain things are non-negotiable simply because everyone else seems to have them.<\/p>

For Singaporean couples, weddings often sit at the intersection of personal preferences, cultural traditions, family expectations and social conventions. You’re not just planning a celebration of your relationship; you’re also navigating what your parents envision, what your relatives expect and what your social circle considers a proper wedding.<\/p>

Add an endless stream of wedding inspiration online, and what began as a celebration of two people in love can start to feel like a production with an invisible set of standards to meet. The tricky part? Nobody necessarily tells you that you must have all these things. You simply absorb the idea that you should.<\/p>

Perhaps the hardest part of questioning wedding expectations is that the line between what we want and what we’ve been conditioned to want isn’t always obvious. Some couples genuinely love the idea of a grand banquet with hundreds of guests, while others would prefer an intimate celebration but find themselves planning a large wedding because it’s what their families expect or what they’ve always assumed a wedding should look like. Neither choice is inherently better. What matters is whether you’re making it because it feels right for you.<\/p>

The same goes for pre-wedding photoshoots, bridal parties, elaborate d\u00e9cor and multiple wedding gowns. These can be wonderful experiences, but they can also become obligations disguised as milestones, things you feel compelled to include because you don’t want to miss out on the full wedding experience.<\/p>

Social media has made this distinction even harder. While it’s introduced us to more creative ways of celebrating, it’s also made us feel that weddings need to be visually extraordinary, unique and filled with personalised details to be meaningful. But does every wedding really need an elaborate theme, an unexpected entrance or a never-before-seen guest experience? Sometimes, two people exchanging vows, surrounded by loved ones and followed by a good meal, can be everything a couple wants.<\/p>

I think it’s important to acknowledge something: questioning wedding expectations shouldn’t become another reason for couples to feel guilty about wanting a grand celebration. There’s a tendency to romanticise intimate, minimalist weddings as somehow more authentic than elaborate ones, as though choosing a small solemnisation over a ballroom banquet automatically means you’re prioritising love over appearances.<\/p>

But that’s not necessarily true. You can have a 300-guest wedding with dramatic floral arrangements, three outfit changes and a spectacular first dance, and still have a celebration that’s deeply personal and meaningful. Equally, you can have a simple wedding that doesn’t feel like you at all, especially if you’ve chosen it because you feel pressured to be practical or understated.<\/p>

A wedding doesn’t become more authentic simply because it’s smaller, simpler or less conventional. It becomes more authentic when the choices behind it are genuinely yours. The point isn’t to reject traditions or strip your wedding down to the bare essentials. It’s to make sure you’re choosing these experiences because they bring you joy, rather than because you feel your wedding would be incomplete without them.<\/p>

I think this is one of the most revealing questions couples can ask themselves. If there were no expectations from your parents, no comparisons with friends’ weddings and no social media audience, what would your wedding actually look like? Would you still want the big banquet, elaborate d\u00e9cor and bridal party, or would you choose something entirely different?<\/p>

You might discover that your ideal wedding looks remarkably similar to the one you’re already planning. Or you might realise that some of the things you’ve been worrying about aren’t actually important to you. Of course, weddings don’t happen in a vacuum. Family relationships matter, cultural traditions carry meaning and compromise is sometimes part of bringing two families together. But there’s a difference between thoughtfully making room for the people you love and allowing their expectations to determine your entire celebration.<\/p>

Perhaps the question isn’t whether you should care about what other people want, but whether you’ve given your own wishes the same consideration. You don’t need a pre-wedding shoot to prove your love story deserves beautiful photographs, a bridal party to show how much your friendships mean to you or a grand banquet to make your marriage worth celebrating. And you certainly don’t have to reject any of those things just to prove your wedding is different.<\/p>

Years from now, when you look back on your wedding, chances are you won’t be thinking about whether your celebration measured up to the ones you saw on Instagram. You’ll remember how you felt, the people who celebrated with you and the little moments that made the day special.<\/p>

So, have the big wedding. Wear the second gown. Book the elaborate floral installation. Or skip all of it and celebrate in a way that feels entirely your own. Just don’t mistake someone else’s idea of a dream wedding for yours, because the wedding you should want isn’t necessarily the one you’ve always imagined a wedding is supposed to be. It’s the one that makes you happy to call it your own.<\/p>
