Last weekend, speculation of Korean Artiz Studio (registered on ACRA as Korea Artiz Studio Pte. Ltd.)’s closure began circulating online, although no official announcement had been made at the time. On Tuesday, 18 August, reports on Korean Artiz Studio’s sudden closure started appearing on Reddit and Facebook, with Straits Times publishing an article about CASE receiving 66 complaints involving S$271,000 prepayment losses on 19 August, lending credence to the speculation that had been circulating online over the weekend. The closure has left couples who had engaged the boutique facing uncertainty over their wedding gowns and pre-wedding arrangements, with some now having to make alternative arrangements at short notice.
According to a Reddit thread, for couples who have already completed their photoshoot with Korean Artiz Studio, there may be an opportunity to collect their photographs from a staff member.
What Affected Couples Can Do
If you are affected by Korean Artiz Studio’s closure, there are several steps you may wish to consider while making alternative arrangements and seeking recourse for services or payments that remain outstanding. Keep copies of your original invoice, receipts, contracts, payment records and any correspondence with the boutique, as these may be useful when pursuing any of the options below.
1. Consider Making a Police Report
Consider making a police report, especially if you believe you have been misled to pay for a service the business already knew it could not deliver. A police report can be made separately from any steps you take to seek a refund or pursue a consumer claim, so couples who feel they may have grounds to do so can consider making a report while also exploring the other avenues available to them.
2. If You Paid by Credit Card, Check Your Chargeback Options
If you paid for your bridal package or services by credit card, it may be worth contacting your card-issuing bank as soon as possible to find out whether you can dispute the transaction. A chargeback may be available where goods or services have not been received.
According to CASE’s chargeback guide, chargeback requests are subject to time limits and the applicable card issuer and card-scheme rules. As there may be time limits involved, couples are encouraged to contact their bank promptly to find out what options are available to them.
When speaking with your bank, have your original invoice, payment records, contract and any correspondence with Korean Artiz Studio ready. These documents may help support your case. If you paid by bank transfer or PayNow, a credit-card chargeback would not apply, but there are other avenues you can explore below.
3. File a Complaint With CASE and Consider the Small Claims Tribunals
If you are unable to resolve the matter directly with Korean Artiz Studio, you may also wish to seek assistance from the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE). CASE assists with certain consumer-to-business disputes and may help consumers and businesses work towards a resolution through mediation.
Another option is the Small Claims Tribunals (SCT), which hear certain disputes involving contracts for the provision of services. Claims of up to S$20,000 can generally be heard by the SCT, with the limit extendable to S$30,000 if both parties consent in writing.
If you decide to pursue either avenue, keep all relevant documents and correspondence, including your invoice, receipts, contract, payment records, photographs, emails and messages with the boutique. These can help you provide a clear record of your arrangements and the payments you have made.
As with any claim, there is no guarantee that the full amount owed will ultimately be recovered. However, for couples who wish to pursue the matter further, these avenues may provide a way to formally seek a resolution.
