Serene and Daryl’s Intimate Woodland Wedding at Lewin Terrace
Serene and Daryl got together over the romantic holiday season in London. Celebrating their two cultures, the couple wed in an intimate, woodland wedding at Lewin Terrace, which creative Serene styled herself!
Serene Ashley Chen, 31, Marketing Manager and Daryl Ashley Kryst, 28, Doctor met in Singapore and reconnected during Christmas in London. Wanting to celebrate both European and Asian cultures, they tied the knot in a beautiful, intimate wedding in Lewin Terrace on 20 August 2016 with close friends and family before hosting a traditional Chinese banquet for relatives.
How did the two of you meet?
Serene: We met in Singapore through a mutual friend when Daryl was in town visiting relatives and family friends.
Daryl: Serene and I reconnected in Europe when she came up for a holiday. We spent a lovely Christmas in London with the family and got together on Boxing Day! What a lovely present.
What drew you to each other?
Daryl: I found her stunningly beautiful. Then I found out how thoughtful and caring she was.
Serene: I was instantly attracted by his warmth and friendly demeanour. He literally had me at hello when I entered my friend’s car. He greeted me with a big bright smile and hearty hello. Daryl is incredibly kind and caring.
What was the proposal like?
Daryl: I wanted to do it in Singapore as it had more meaning than in London, as it was the place where I first saw her. So we combined all the things we loved doing while I was there.
Serene: We started the day with brunch at Wild Honey at Mandarin Gallery. Daryl loves the English breakfast there–he claims it’s even better than what he’s had back in London. Then we planned to spend a whole day at Sentosa. We love it there!
Daryl: I suggested going to the beach and having dinner at Coastes which had a special meaning for us. When we were first there, it was a rainy afternoon. It was still drizzling when we were watching the waves hit the shore at sunset, lying next to each other on a cabana, and it struck me—I wouldn’t want to share this moment with anyone else except for her.
Serene: Out of nowhere and in a matter of seconds, he was down on one knee, holding up a beautiful diamond ring before me. Hot tears started welling as it dawned on me that this was the moment he would pop the question.
Daryl: I proposed and she said yes!
Serene: It was such a beautiful moment.
Tell us about your wedding! What kind of wedding did you want?
Daryl: Something simple and classy. To be honest, it was all planned by the wifey. She has an amazing eye and sense of style, I basically went along for the ride and tried to give my input as much as I could.
Serene: That’s true. Daryl was super supportive about everything I suggested. I started looking for inspiration on Pinterest. I loved the boho garden look of weddings. If I could have, I would have done a woodland wedding in the forest and fed my guests berries. Alas, this is Singapore and the weather wouldn’t have worked. I wanted to avoid the typical banquet in hotel ballrooms as it was boring, conventional, and restrictive.
One day I was walking along Coleman Street and I was led into this enchanted-looking colonial house amidst lush greenery. I knew instantly that we would have our reception there. The place was Lewin Terrace. As for the wedding mass in the morning, we wanted to do it at the Church of St. Peter and Paul where we attended one of our first masses in Singapore together. Luckily, the timing worked and we managed to book the place right after the church completed refurbishment works.
I ordered a custom Grace Loves Lace gown. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit, so I had to go with an off the rack rental dress from a bridal boutique in Delphi Orchard.
How did your wedding day turn out?
Daryl: I saw only her as she walked down the aisle in church.
Serene: It was a cosy affair. We had our closest family and friends present and we shared a lovely day with them. We had our first dance at Lewin Terrace and it felt like there was no one else but the two of us at that moment. I felt secure in his arms and blessed that we were now man and wife.
Daryl: We wanted to have a mixture of European and Asian cultures to reflect our heritage so we had a European style lunch with immediate family and close friends, followed by a Chinese banquet for other relatives at Asia Grand in the evening.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?
Daryl: For me, without sounding too cheesy, it was the moment I saw her walk down the aisle and I knew this was the best decision of my life, and that I am the luckiest man alive to have such a perfect partner be with me for all the days to come.
Serene: It was the moment I walked down with Papa, and I heard my husband-to-be serenading me with a modified version of Maroon 5’s Sunday Morning. When he held out his warm and comforting hands to receive mine at the front of the aisle, I felt in my spirit that he was the one I could entrust my heart to for the rest of my life.
