Buying Diamond Ring

Ohh, lighting will affect the appearance? pardon me.. still at the initial stage of diamond search.
But then the question is, how to tell from other lighting? They can't possibly lend me their diamond to bring outside their shop. :p

You can request for a ASET scope or an Ideal scope image to see the light return. If they don't have, then u can buy ur own (haha actually not very ex lah) scope to bring to the shop.

If you are free, you can read up. I can suggest going to the pricescope website.

Also if you are trying to sieve out diamonds that may be potentially under-performing, you can use the Hollaway cut advisor tool to assist you in your search.

My colleague went Jannpaul n the person did show him two diamonds (I think solasfera n super ideal) at the entrance of the boutique, where's there's more natural lighting.

but if u're comparing between diamonds, then as long as both are under the same lighting should be fine..
Haiya, most importantly you like that diamond can liao lol :p

What?? they allow you see diamonds outside store? so good! like that wont get blinded by those strong lighting and can see how the diamond really look like...

I went to a retail shop yesterday and when i try to use my hand to block the light, the salesperson gave me an uneasy look. Make me so uncomfortable..

As you said, if diamond don't shine then might as well buy crystal. :p

Hi, I got a question. Engagement ring mix rose and white gold better? or the whole thing rose gold better? I like rose gold alot but dunno if I should do it half half or the whole thing.

I can't view the last photo. but personally I prefer my ring to be as simple as possible, meaning 1 gold (either pure white or pure rose) :) that's just my personal preference thou..
if u really like rose gold a lot, why not have it in full rose gold?

They also showed me outside of their shop. There is obvious difference in terms of brightness between a normal 3 excellent diamond vs their super ideal cut. So I agree with OYHZ that jewellery lighting is very deceiving.
Take a look at this video:

If the ring and the claws are rose gold, it will make the diamond yellowish. I would suggest leaving the claws to be white gold and the ring can be mixture or full rose gold.

Hi,

I have just got some scope images of the diamond I reserved. To me, the light leakages are pretty assymetrical.. any cause for concern?

Also, is it me or some of the hearts are a little thinner than the rest? Does these matter too?

or should I wait for new stocks to come in?

The scope images look great to me. Its of brellia quality with minimal light leakages and symmetrical arrows.
From my understanding the leakages is not meant to be symmetrical.
Don't worry la. their diamond has the strictest criteria :D

Best is if can steal one of her existing ring then measure it. If not, you can use a string to tie her finger and measure the circumference.
Good luck!

I think you can choose for her but you should walk around some shops and have an idea of the type she likes! :)
Anyway my boyfriend has already purchased a diamond for me, ring design to be confirmed. If you would like to do the same, I can send you the vendor contact I purchased my ring from, it is also GIA certified and ring size can be changed for free! (My friend's wife changed after she put on some weight). Hope this helps! Kudos!

I can share with you the sales person my friend shared with me. His wife changed the ring size for free, I think it is useful as you can change it if your estimation is wrong. He also mentioned the price (comparing with quality) is cheaper than elsewhere, no harm to take a look if you are still searching for the ring. Let me know if you need the contact, hope this helps! :)

For my case he told me to choose 3.. of coz he must be able to take the price and to him nice not.. hahahaha..
hahahaha, if go with him to choose don't know how u all feel but for me is like abit embarassed. the answer to his proposal is already a "Yes". hahaha.

Hahaha! I know what you mean. And actually for me, I feel kinda awkward and pressurized choosing cos they will be looking at you and asking you. I think your mind has to be quite clear on what you like and dont like.

my hubby is sort of traditional type, so he chose the ring himself. But understand from alot of my colleagues and friend, nowadays alot of guys bring their gf to choose the ring, so i guess its quite common now. =)

Believe this is a new diamond by JP cause when i bought my diamond that time, didn't see this diamond. Looks very unique indeed.
Same as you, also looking for special shape diamond instead of the traditional round. In the end, got the Octagon diamond.
Happy diamond hunting!! =)

I still prefer round.. 4 claws enuf liao.. too many claws looks old..

yup :) i prefer that too.. mine was a round, with just 4 claws.. unless you have a super big diamond, having too many claws will make it look engulfed too...

i didn't choose my ring.. but my HTB did ask some questions, about like what shape i like etc etc..

Personally i like the octagon shape diamond, but my SO hinted me she likes round so no choice in the end I bought the Solasfera.

Anyway these are the images of my diamond.

went to jp recently and attended their education session. From what others mentioned here in the forum, true enough they really tell you things unheard of from other stores i visited. I was impressed.
Fell in love with their octagon diamond, but sadly they dont have the the specifications I looking for. :( waiting for the next batch of stocks.

how do you rate color and clarity? is it important?

Saw from other forum saying that there is not much stock left for their Octagon diamond. Good things must wait :D
I agree with what u say. They show you things that other retailers don't normally show you and I can confidently say that my diamond is much brighter than my "old" one.

As for the importance of the color and clarity. For me, I rank color higher as I can see the yellowish in the diamond. My hubby rank clarity higher as he mind the inclusion when seen with scope.
How I choose, we have a balance in color and clarity (mid range for both).

Cant agree more! Visited several shops. All they tell me is triple excellent is the "best" thats all.

Have been following this tread and some other forums closely for months. And I have to thank all the comments here and make me understand more about diamond. Before all these, I have to admit I only understand about the size which is the carat without even knowing that carat is only referring to the weight of diamond and not how big it is. Only started to do more in-depth reading when my HTB told me that he is bringing me to choose my own diamond.

Started by going to all the general retailers like Lee Hwa, Soo Kee etc. and basically they concentrate on the design more rather than the quality of the diamonds, and sadly they don''t explain to you much and just tell you the diamond cutting is good as shown in the cert. tbh from the look of it they really look shiny and bright but having read through the tread, realized that lighting in shops are very deceiving. Scopes are required to determine the brightness instead.

The last stop and the place where we made our purchase, jannpaul, as highly recommended by most comments here and also other forums, living up to its name. The sales person very patiently go through the diamond education for 1+hour, showing all the scopes, different lighting conditions and even outside of their shop to see differences between a poorly cut triple excellent diamond vs their super ideal cut. At no time, I feel pressurized to make a purchase, and the shop are so packed on a Saturday afternoon.

At the end of the day, my HTB and I are very satisfied with their service and also our purchase.

I totally agree with your comment.. my husband previously bought me my engagement ring at sookee, don't think he do much research then, so he went around the big brand and based on the 4Cs and bought the ring.
Only when we decided to upgrade my diamond to a bigger size then I did more research. Googled and mostly all the forums and reviews say good thing about JP and we decided to go see for ourselves. True enough, I placed a deposit with them. =)

Do share your scope images when you received it... =)

Hello
Other than 4Cs in a diamond, what else to look for?
So many shops out there such as goldheart, JP, sookee, leehwa etc
Any core competency they have to differentiate among one another?

I have been to all the big chain stores like LW, SK, GH, the feeling is that they are very sales oriented and don't really have good diamond knowledge other than the basic 4Cs.
They always show me the cert saying that this diamond is triple excellent so its a very bright diamond. However, after I sit through the diamond education session from JP, realised that there is alot more than the 4Cs.
They used all the different scopes like the Aset, ideal and heart & arrow scopes to analyse the cut quality of the diamond which is not seen in the chain store. only scope they show you is only the heart & arrow scope which to my knowledge dont review on how bright the diamond will be.

1 more thing to take note, the lighting that all the jewellery shop uses are very deceiving and all diamonds look very bright and shinny. So the scopes are the best way to determine the brightness.

I would suggest you pay jp a visit to go through their education and you can see for yourselves the difference.

PS: I am in no way related to jp, just a satisfied customer. =)

I feel like customizing my own ring. Any idea how do I go about it?
How i go about customizing my ring that time is i used one of the sample ring from jannpaul and change abit to suit my preference. Alternative, u can google to see what design you like and jannpaul are able to create something out of that.

Repost my ring design for your reference =)
Enjoy the process!
