Honeymoon expense and length

I'm budgeting for my honeymoon and just wondering what would be the average honeymoon budget and travel length that usually people take.
I know this is too general, but at least can give some idea.

Thank you

Hi Pete, as I love to travel, we will be going on a four-week honeymoon. Your budget mainly depends on the kind of accommodation you are comfortable with, as well as the places you are going for meals. :)

What we did was start with the budget then decide where and how long. Eg if u have budget of $10k, if u wanna go Europe maybe u can go for 1+ week, vs if u go a cheaper country can be longer. Also depends the type of honeymoon u looking for like backpacking or stay nice hotels.

My suggestion is start w the budget n decide from there.

Most people take one week for their honeymoon, somewhat less people take two weeks. The budget could be really different in function of the time of your honeymoon, your destination, the distance between where you live and where you would go, and the places you decide to spend your time.
Do you have any idea, where you would like spend your honeymoon? (Caribbean, Europa, Asia, Australi, USA...)
By the way, congratulations on your wedding! :)

We planned for a 2 week trip to scandinavian countries, wished we have much more time, but we both cant leave work for too long. :(
We list down the desired places, those that are kids-friendly places we will go in future. Eg. Hard to bring kids on europe backpacking trip and plus the additional air tix, and will feel guilty to throw them with parents.

Really general question haha. I would go for at least 2 weeks. Even for normal holiday trip we will go about 1-2 weeks.

Spent 10-11 days purely in Paris and Versailles (including Disneyland) just to soak up the culture, lifestyle and venue. We planned everything on our own as we didn't want to get tied down to the restrictions of a tour group - final cost came up to less than $8k including shopping and souvenirs for family/friends. If you plan correctly, you can budget out a nice trip that allows you to stay at reasonably priced yet very comfortable hotels and even dine at good places (we had a go at Gordon Ramsay's Michelin-2stars restaurant). Oh, and don't forget to let the hotels know you're on your honeymoon - they're usually very nice to either give you a very good room or a complimentary bottle of champagne/wine or both! Where possible, try to also avoid clashing your honeymoon with summer if you're headed to Europe/USA as many touristy places will become a lot more crowded as school and university students will be on vacations as well... ;) Feel free to check out our honeymoon video at our YouTube channel:

We went to Germany, Austria and Switzerland for 21 days for our honeymoon - free and easy and drove around for most part of the trip. If you or your hubby can drive, and is comfortable with left hand drive/not afraid to try, you should go on a drive trip!! If you intend to rent the car, get it from Germany - the rental prices are super competitive. If you're going budget, you can try airbnb accommodation :)

I went Tokyo and Hokkaido for 2 weeks for my honeymoon. We go totally free and easy. It depends on what is your budget like. We spent a total of 5000+ for the 2 weeks in Japan. Can check out my blog on the places we went in Hokkaido and Tokyo for your reference :)

Anyone went on a three week holiday to Europe or US? Would setting aside $15k in total be enough?
Hi Paragon,

I went on a 2 week holiday to Paris, London, Rome and Venice while on my pre wedding photoshoot. $15k would be more than enuf for a 3 week holiday. Look out for offers on SIA and Emirates. Prices to Paris can go as low as $1.1k w these airlines. I flew w Emirates and I bought it on offer too. Also book train passes online for ur travel from one city to another. I think u can book up to 6 months in advance. Sometimes u can get early bird offers also n u can compare the pricing online for diff timings. for accommodation, in venice I book w BnB. Was Happy w my experience booking at Airbnb.com. If u need more information or details, do drop me an email at [email protected]: )

Went to Sweden & Finland. From 23rd Dec to 7 Jan. Spent about 12k in total, includes shopping and exotic experience (eg. dog & reindeer sleigh, night stay in igloo). Travelled by Finnair.
Rented a car for 2 days, cruise and mainly eurail for the rest of the journey.
Temperature at Rovaniemi (Artic Circle) lowest was -27 deg for me. Has been a very nice experience.

Hi paragon, when are you planning your honeymoon? We are thinking of planning about a 3 week honeymoon to US too! But we will be mainly using miles and hotel points to redeem, so that will help us save a lot :)

I have been to some of the places during May and December. Seems like you are only going to stop by only the bigger city of the countries.
It's a honeymoon, 2D 1N is too exhausting IMO. Taking train from one place to another would drain half day already. Scandinavian countries should set it aside as 1 trip, to catch northern lights in Autumn/December.

Stockholm- around 2-3 Days would be good. The weather there is nice for a picnic in May.
Östermalms Saluhall. (Yummy food and great experience)
Several Museums: ABBA(interactive), Viking. (Not everyone likes museums)
Gamlastan: Old town, worth to go once (cos I been twice so far)
Lots of shopping malls everywhere but not crowded like SG.

Amsterdam - Didnt go there. But I went to other parts in the Netherlands.
Uretcht: Miffy Museum
The Hague: Escher Museum (Love this!)

Frankfurt - I didnt do much exciting stuff there. Not much walking since a valid eurail pass is free transport in Germany.
Cheapest place for groceries as compared to other part of europe that you are going.
Another city, pretty similar to SG. High rise buildings.

Switerland - Went twice. Fascinating scenery.
Jungfrau: Probably one of the best scenic train in Europe. Transition from spring to winter. But is pretty expensive! Very cold upthere.
Cheese Fondue (Very nice!)
Lucerne: Buy branded watches and the souvenirs

Italy - maybe 5-6 days.
Rome: Vatican city plus all the other famous ones. Colosseum looks nicer on the outside. Day and night shots are both great! Vatican took almost a day for me. Lots of cathedrals. Only proper attire are allowed to enter.
Florence: Great place to shop for non branded but real leather stuff!
Pisa: Just that slanted building.
Venice: Since it is sinking, why not visit it soon. :p Just a day will do. Quite a small town.

Paris: perhaps 1-2 days
Unique building shapes. Crazy queues at champs elysees for branded stuff as if they are free. Disneyland with songs in french. Eiffel tower, Louvre museum (only know Mona Lisa), etc.
The attractions are pretty close to each other in Paris.

London: I cant rmb much. Probably I was too tired to do much as it was my last stop.
Harry Potter Tour. If you are hardcore fans.
Lots of bridges. Only one named London.

PS. I went twice backpacking and one tour package.

1st trip (backpacking): 4k (19days) - SG>Frankfurt>Berlin>Stockholm>Den Haag/Utretch/Eindhoven>Paris>Switzerland(Basel)>Milan>Rome>London (Poor Student Package)
2nd trip (tour package) : 5k (12 days) - Italy+Switzerland+Paris (Parents Sponsored)
3rd trip (backpacking + 3 days car rental): 12k (15 days) - Finland + Sweden (It's a honeymoon! $___$)

You can get around via train(Eurail) on most places, some places may require ferry and some is cheaper and time saving via budget flight. Do take note that some trains require reservation.
Eg. Eurostar(a train to london) is more ex compared to budget flight. The arrival timing of the trains are very accurate.
The reason I drove in the 3rd backpacking trip was transportation not so easy to get, especially during Xmas. But it save us alot of energy and time!

The intracity train stations distance in frankfurt is like every 2 bus stops here. I usually go everywhere by foot.
So, the first thing I got off at a new place was to always look for the information counter for a map. Or u can always download one.

Hotels are usually 1-5 min walk away. Will be  if you have to drag your luggage for a long distance and the road there arent that smooth.

Most big cities have special 24hr day pass. starting from the time u board (so is basically a 2 days tix)
Do take note of the day you are travelling, it might be a public holiday or certain day where some attraction are not open.

PS. If you are a flower lover, you should visit keukenhof in Netherlands. But they are only available in March-May yearly.

Previously I went to Europe in this order:
Paris (France), Milan(Italy) Rome(Italy), Pisa(Italy), Florence(Italy) and then head to Lugano (Switzerland), Lucerne (Switzerland), Bern ( Switzerland), Interlaken (Switzerland) and then Zurich (Switzerland)

Total trip duration is 3 weeks plus abit.

Costing wise about 15k , excluding air tickets. We travelled fully by railway passes by EURAIL which we purchased in Singapore itself. =)

Hi berine! Where do u stay when u backpack? Hotel or those backpacking hostel?

My first trip have mixture of hotels and hostels. Mostly hostels. But the last 2 trips all hotels. The 15k have 2/3 boutique hotels so per night is $250 and above. And I spent quite a bit on food and rides. (Eg. Reindeer sleigh, husky sleigh, etc)

Generally, if it is not the peak season and u booked pretty early, u can find hotels below $150. For honeymoon I would recommend hotel. Some hostels do have private room with shared toilet.

Eurail, you can order directly from them. And they sent right to ur doorstep in 2-3 weeks. Was a registered mail.

Wow. $250 per night! I see that you specifically picked the shopping stuff. Haha, as long as your hb is okay.
My hb always like to change the location if it is meant for shopping, have to show him something nice in those places instead.

Yes, london is very expensive. I spent quite abit on transport there.

Switzerland train, you are referring to the scenic trains? They have a few. For Jungfrau, I was in interlaken. The trip was booked by the tour agency.
For all my trips I usually book directly. Not sure how to get the tickets via another agent. But they most probably will email you the procedure.
Interlaken OST can be reached by eurail. With valid eurailpass, got discount.
